The tragedy & paradox is this: The reason to attach the "Earthsea" name to this oddity was a cynical move to create a product with a name recognizable to fans , thus securing a built in audience. But they only succeeded in alienating those who know the books , while also failing to win any new audience with a lackluster & heartless production. But , like true rapists , their only aims were selfish ones , uncaring of the destruction and ruin left in their wake. Screw them all.

It's a crying shame that Ursula K Le Guin turned down Hayao Miyazaki's offer to direct a movie based on the book in the 80'ies... This is crap, and the 'tales of earthsea' movie is definately not of the ususal Ghibli standart...

There could easily be made a fantastic trillogi like 'lord of the rings' based on the earthsea books... :( If only somebody wanted to...

Yeah, but in the book, Sparrowhawk was more unpleasant, so making Jasper more of a jerk balances it out. Besides, I wouldn't call him a "rival buddy". They didn't like each other, period.

OMG, this is typical Ameri-TV production TRASH. For example, the "doorkeeper" is supposed to be one of the masters of Roke, not some pissy-faced, prim little snot. Useless casting, shallow acting, and myopic production. What a complete failure. They should have approached Joss Whedon. He'd have made it classic!

the names are the wrong way round as someone mentioned... in the book their true names are words from the ancient language. Sparrowhawk is just his use name which he acquires because he has an affinity with birds of prey - he liked to summon them to him when he started to learn magic.

secondly... hes only 14 or so when he goes to the school on roke, just a kid really. i think they should have used a child actor to play him at this point...

also think half the cast suck... vetch isnt a fat geek in the book, and neither is the doorkeeper a wierdo. Also i think the archmage isnt very good either - i imagined him to be a much wiser/tranquil character, something like they made dumbledore when played by richard harris in the earlier films.

this whole series is an insult to the epicness of the earthsea series - it trivialises it all.. makes a mockery of it.

I've just finished reading the Earthsea Quartet. I saw this on tv YEARS ago and it made me want to read it, but now i see why people say it's terrible. Aside from the costume and set, which I think is quite nice considering Tales From Earthsea (the studio Ghibi animation) didn't give me enough for what I imagined in my head, I now remember why I never finished watching the series back then - it was BORING. ...

And yeah, it annoys the hell out of me when this AND the Ghibli animation ignore the fact that the people are dark/red/bronze skinned - it's kinda a little, I dunno... seems like they're trying to AVOID colouring the characters the way they're written in the book, because otherwise there wouldn't be enough 'light-skinned' people in it...?

Annoying is NOT the word. Okay, digressing a little, this miniseries is indeed the Harry Potter before the Harry Potter films and back to the one thing I started this rant for in the first place: I THOUGHT GIRLS WEREN'T ALLOWED IN ROKE? I appreciated your rant. The same things got to me. Especially when Harry Potter seems to be a generic whitewash of the wizard's school on Roke, what idiot would remove everything that distinguishes Earthsea and Ged from Harry Potter? Races, gender roles, white barbarians, not to mention restraint with true magic - pisses me off. And why have the door scene at all if they are going to remove the entire lesson? I wonder if they killed the character development, too. Looks like it.

I know Ursula K. LeGuin was absolutly furious at how horrible this series was. I can already see tons of flaws (the location of their skin color, women in the school, plus Ged looks way to old not a teenager, the whol entrance to the school scene.)

But I do wish there was more on here because I have always wanted to see it just for the sake of it. I would still like to see it just to say I have.
