This is a standard for ALL policy speeches and press conferences. If the Obama Administration had not chosen not to cover it up they would have been showing favoritism for a particular religion - which goes against the First Amendment of The Constitution. The President shouldn't have religious symbols around him when speaking a political message. The "standard" I was referring to is having a religiously neutral background, not necessarily American flags. Having a particular automobile logo lingering in the background while speaking in Detroit or something along those lines is different. Keeping the symbols uncovered would not break any law but that doesn't mean it's PC. Politics and religion are to be separated.

The Catholics also believe that Mary was sinless and deserves praise, and they believe in purgatory.

The "standard" I was referring to is having a religiously neutral background, not necessarily American flags. Having a particular automobile logo lingering in the background while speaking in Detroit or something along those lines is different.
