Thanks for that, with your comments it makes a bit more sense! Have to say, I'm slightly jealous. My first RRU was an astra van, it went like snot and was easy to handle. Plenty room for all the kit + kitchen sink they made us carry too. Now we have a CRV. yes i shouldnt grumble, nice motor, comfy, expensive. (thought the nhs was hard up? buy a corsa and give me a raise!) but It doesn't handle, has no room and scares the livin £$% out of me on corners. anyway, cheers for the reply. :-)
@Disneyparisfan You're more than welcome. I have to say I find the Astra exactly as you have described it. I was doing a CFR meeting the other night where I had; the vehicle kit, an extra grab bag full of training defibs, 2 laerdal adult resusci-annes and a "Fat Fred" resus aid - it all went in with a bit of room to spare. It sure moves when required to, too. Have fun and stay safe.
I have a few questions, sorry if they are a bit negative but I would hope you can give feedback.
This is a 'rapid response unit' yet wont be marked up till 'the end of this year' How can this possibly be utilised until then? Or are you not making 999 responses.
The kit appears basic. Do you not carry Defibrillation, Analgesia, c-spine control etc etc??
As a full time SR Para, who works both on RRU's and Front Line AEUs, sorry, but this is just a van pretending to be something it isnt.
We don't tend to do 999 work. We predominantly do event cover. Even when using our emergency ambulances we very very rarely utilise the blue's and two's, simply due to the nature of the work - we usually work as a static ambulance where waning equipment isn't needed.
@policeblue999 The kit that I keep in the van (shown here) purely stays in this vehicle so it isn't removed (as the van stays with me). When I am at a duty (especially on my own) I will always carry a defib, usually Analgesia, collars (sometimes a board if required) and a few other extras you'd expect to find. If I am accompanying the ambulance(s) I will often just add a defib, as all of the other essentials are on-board the van - unless I am based away from the location of the van.
@Disneyparisfan This is also used for community responding, where the CFR kit provided has everything else that is needed for such work. The van will eventually be marked up to allow us to go for work where the warning equipment can then be utilised.
@modelearth Ah, that makes sense then, my apologies. I am infact an Emergency Medical Technician (Intermediate Life Support and Life Care), one rank below a Paramedic (Advanced Life Support and Life Care). As well as working on ambulances I work on response cars such as this for a Private Ambulance Service.
I also work part-time for East of England Ambulance as a Community First Responder, much like a volunteer Paramedic although we only work up to Basic Life Support levels.
@policeblue999 I have an introduction evening at wakefield HQ on the 21st for community first responder, Do you have any tips :)? Im going to be working with the search and rescue team this year and next too.
@policeblue999 Um, its just an introduction evening they've invited me too as i expressed intrest in becoming one, it says in the letter, " It will enable us to give you an insite into what the post entails and in return you will be able to ask any questions you may have"... They also enclosed some application forms which they require to be filled out and brought with me to the introduction evening. and it also says there will be the equipment available there for me to look at.
@policeblue999 Um yea on the application form it says please give details of previous experiance or training in first aid or life support skills, As of yet i dont have any but i will be working with the calder valley search and rescue team shortly and also getting my first aid through their own first aid trainer, Shall i put i have non or "i will shortly be undergowing my first aid course with the search and rescue team?"
@policeblue999 It's good that you are helping people, i fully support members of the ambulance service, fire service and police service. Good for you for doing this job. You have my respect sir.

Well I haven't heard you say before that you worked for an emergency service so it seemed very random. Are you a paramedic?
