@crifoter69 Whose party? Did ya' help pay for the beer and hot dogs or just feed off the generosity of the people who invited you? There's plenty of room for what you're saying, seeing as how you've done everything for yourself: gave birth to yourself, sucked at your own tit, put yourself through elementary school. Or you might ask yourself, "Is there one less ass hole at the party now that I've stomped out?" And, who came looking for you to ask "Come on back man, we were hoping you'd stay"?
@crifoter69 Or, better, it you're one of the rare guys who managed to keep your job - and it's to your credit that you did - why not share that experience or knowledge, or at least try to get one of those deadbeats that's got you thinking about stomping out of the party a job with the company you're working for. It might get you laid. Plus, one less deadbeat complaining about unemployment, or, a bud to stomp out of the party with when you've both had enough. Sorry I was rude, I'm out of dope.

amazing how little americans know of their past, we're doomed to make the same mistakes over and over again. you don't destroy the working class without destroying the country. but here it is again, starting with reagan, income disparity has widened to levels before the '29 collapse. the irony is most americans think the bandaid we put on the 2008 fallout fixed the problem. the big one is a comin, hang on to your hats, the fat cats are still doing the same things that caused the first one.
Why do we need movement in the visuals? I would rather just see a series of still photographs. We can let our own eyes observe without so much guidance and distraction constantly zooming in and out and back and forth...
We'll know each other a while yet, but I want you to finish the playlist, buddy. Today was your show, but now it's your turn to "direct."
It took us a while to get here, but it's time to finish the job.
If you love me, you won't let anyone die anymore. Don't blame yourself if somebody does, though. It won't be your fault. I'll keep living for our sake. I don't think I could stand knowing that I wouldn't see the face you choose.
Sounds too good for Lomax's recordings, circa 1929.... I could be wrong... but in 1929, he was using a transcription disc recorder powered from his car generator. The discs are usually a bit noisy from the 20's, also they had a time limit of about 3 minutes. This sounds to be 50s or so.
I love this song. This song is so great. I hate country but I don't consider this country, this is folk singing at it's finest. You know, I feel that he was the original Bob Dylan. He didn't have as much crazy stuff to write about in his time, but he had the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. I love his music. And he had the best sticker ever on his guitar: THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS!!! Talk about bad ass...
@vaibanez17 oh, his music was country, Vai. It's just that it wasn't "cry baby country" like the money-grubbing stuff they crank out today where it's all the same stick-with-the-winner melody. Woody's stuff was Country Protest. But it's as country as u'll ever get. He was Dylan's mentor. who do u think taught Bob 2 play the harmonica that way! Yep. Woodie was in their face with reality and got busted up quite a lot 4 it, too. he said, "I hate a song that tells you that you're no good."
On this day in 1935 a great dust storm covered the Texas Panhandle town of Pampa, inspiring Woody Guthrie to write the song "So Long, It's Been Good To Know You."
When the great storm of April 14, 1935, occurred, some Pampans thought that the end of the world was upon them and that there was just time for final goodbyes.
@mkworkman yes, but... later on it became metaphoric for being on the road. I saw one of those dust storms when I was traveling in Australia. It's an awesome sight. flying topsoil. Woodie began 2be a regular traveler; it's like the dust taught him 2fly. I saw a picture of him with his Gibson guitar and no guitar case out on the road somewhere sitting next to Burl Ives, reading a copy of "The Hobo News".
Woody knew that being called an Okie wasnt a term of endearment; he was an outsider and always would be an outsider. He wasnt just a little man who wrote songs for the oppressed. He was the oppressed, and he wrote songs for the little people who were oppressed everywhere. He walked out on good jobs because he wouldnt be muzzled or censored. If you wanted Woody you got Woody, all of him, not just the polite parts.
On April 14 1935, Woody was huddled in a blackened room in Pampa, Texas when the opening line to this song came to him. That day is referred to as Black Sunday, the day when a duster 200 miles across and miles high rolled from the Dakotas to the Gulf of Mexico and blackened the sky throughout the high plains. The storm produced enough static electricity to power New York. (From the Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan)
Pete Seeger was obviously inspired by Woody when he wrote on his banjo head, but had a different approach: "This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces it To Surrender"
A great hero to the union movement. If you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeat it. Labor and management have once again become unbalanced and it is time for the workers to rise up and organize. Wall Street has robbed the poor and the powerless. Organize and fight back!
If you like Woody, then you should check out Pokey LaFarge. He is a young guy who plays music just like this. A real tribute to a man like Woody. Even looks like him a little!

Are any quality folk singers now really interested in the decline of the white working class? A group who seem to pay most of the tax, and get fewest of the benefits.
Most modern folk singers are wise enough not to separate the working class up by race. Just like Woody, they understand that all workers should unite. Looking at one another differently by race only helps the aristocrats maintain power.
@TingoTroy Very true, thelabor movement will rise again, it's just a matter of time, the rich bastards are shooting themselves in the foot. Solidarity Forever!
You can hear the dust in his vocals and see the dregs in his bowl. No over production here, a couple of mikes and 'Go for it sonny'. Uncorruptable, and like Woody said, 'Take it easy, or take it any way you can'. Gone Before.
Also the 40s is when we the United States reached super power status in the world and we are all aware of the turmoil that took place in the 60s and of course 2000 is current.
Don't forget the Mexican/American war and Spanish/American war... Not too proud of those.
However, as a response, we're listening to a song about the great dust bowl and having pictures by Dorothea Lange flashed in front of us. This is politically charged and such discussion is inevitable.
What you should be asking is why the discussion inevitably shifts to ten years later and stays there. US history on youtube seems to reach a stable equilibrium in the 1940s, 1960s, and 2000s. Why?
Thanks brother-a great tune from a great man,but what impressed me most was the vid-wonderful selection of pictures thoughtfully put together..respect!
What? as an English man I thank America for her help in both world war's. I would rather have one Yank than ten Huns. Even Woody a man of the people fought against you
America may be rich but it still can't even look after it's own people, you don't even have free health care, half your population live in poverty because they're black. I'de rather live in Englan than America any day.
I won't beg for America to return... when America loses it's place in world power system I'll be quite happy about it (you know why? Because otherwise America won't learn, that it overestimates itself...).
I mean, I'm greatful for what America did in World War II for us Germans. But have you ever notived that you never have won a war you started yourself? E.g. Vietnam or Iraq?... So why beg for something that just helps others to improve their power that they don't deserve anymore...?
I don't hate America... I just think that there are some things that went wrong throughout the past 100 years... But that's what happened all over the world.... And you know what? I really like Woody, he was great... I'm just talking 'bout the things that went wrong...
I'm from Denmark, we certenly don't hate USA, but i think (for the sake og 45 million americans) who don't have a simple thing as free health Insurance, that there is some sort of solidarity, or if people can't get food on the table every day in such a rich country, there is something very wrong
we are a nation of hypocrites, duped into thinking everything will be ok if we just rely on guns and war and free markets. i love my country, but we cant see past our noses and realize that our neighbors security is our security. ppl that never gave a shit about the uninsured before, when it was easier to fix, now see premiums spiraling out of control and cant afford health insurance. i wish i had it, and im a college graduate from uc berkeley. piss poor and pitiful
well, they dont live in poverty because they are black. that ended in the 60's. now they live in poverty because our economy has gone south and our government is made up of greedy fuckers who wont raise the minimum wage.
Someone says that acting/voting in your best interest is a capitalist thing. Get real, most of the working class has been duped into voting for the Repubs for the last 30 years, as if *that's* in their best interests! No, folks, the unions are in the best interests of the workers! Not the republicans, often not even the Democrats! The union is what dragged us out of poverty, and the loss of our unions is what's dragging us back into poverty.
you are so right, i don't care how rich people are, but i do care if people are so poor that they can't live a decent live, and with the richness in USA, this should not be a problem, USA needs a little socialism
the reason why there is no really poor people but still a lot of rich people in denmark and scandinavia is because we have some sort of socialism, and thats why everybody also have health care for free, and everybody have a place to live, but maybe the richest people in dk is not as rich as those in USA, but nobody have to worry about if they get sick or their children get sick, nobody have to worry about education it is paid for, "if i get sick you tahe care of me, and if you got sick i
im not for 100% for capitalism or socialism but the reason why the United States has such incredibly wealthy people is because there aren't the elements of socialism that a lot of other countries have
Dude, sorry to burst your bubble but you need to watch the news more. The only things keeping the USA afloat are Chineese pension funds. That & a war economy.
it seeems that after the last econmical crises, even USA is turning (not only to socialism) but to communism, as far as i know some of the big actors in the financial sectors are being "nationalised", after the "raw" capitalism failed
too often unpatriotic may be used synonymously with "living with eyes closed" approach to america. it is not unpatriotic to question the current state of the union at all. and there is only one "o" in the word "to" that you were trying to use. too not attend grade-school is unpatriotic.
All you pampered puke make me ill, your so far removed from the reality of this clip you cant see past your spoiled, aircon, computered, pepsicola reality,a bit of recession would do you septics the world of good.
I think both of you are dumb. 714302 needs to learn the difference between depression and recession, and smack needs to learn to learn to formulate ideas.
I've talked to many people who lived through the depression. Do your homework, we are headed into a depression. a big one! Let me guess. youre a republican
Tell that to the people who are working themselves to death and struggling to make it and get by while trying to hold on to what little bit of sanity they have left. Myself included. It FEELS like a fkn depression even if some call it a recession.Recession is just a fancy word for "WE'RE ALL SCREWED".
Extremely well edited video. And your choice of images is superb. Congratulations and thank you!

Are any quality folk singers now really interested in the decline of the white working class? A group who seem to pay most of the tax, and get fewest of the benefits.
romanbrough 2 years ago
Most modern folk singers are wise enough not to separate the working class up by race. Just like Woody, they understand that all workers should unite. Looking at one another differently by race only helps the aristocrats maintain power.

You can hear the dust in his vocals and see the dregs in his bowl. No over production here, a couple of mikes and 'Go for it sonny'. Uncorruptable, and like Woody said, 'Take it easy, or take it any way you can'. Gone Before.

Also the 40s is when we the United States reached super power status in the world and we are all aware of the turmoil that took place in the 60s and of course 2000 is current.

and are most of you just political science majors or does any one even give a fuck about American folk music?
WoodenBelly50 3 years ago
i like folk! save the politics for face to face, make your own difference in life, not on youtube
outcold252 3 years ago 11
Don't forget the Mexican/American war and Spanish/American war... Not too proud of those.
However, as a response, we're listening to a song about the great dust bowl and having pictures by Dorothea Lange flashed in front of us. This is politically charged and such discussion is inevitable.
What you should be asking is why the discussion inevitably shifts to ten years later and stays there. US history on youtube seems to reach a stable equilibrium in the 1940s, 1960s, and 2000s. Why?

15T= 15 000 000 000 000 (most of which is China's)

America may be rich but it still can't even look after it's own people, you don't even have free health care, half your population live in poverty because they're black. I'de rather live in Englan than America any day.

How can you love a country you cannot even spell? It's not Enlan you moron it is England.

I suppose, but the simple fact is, the world does hate America. You've done nothing but fuck up since 1945.
Unpackthat 3 years ago
Utterly meaningless hate speech.
Wait till China takes our place. You'll be begging for us to return.
Philly1330 3 years ago
Lol, not likely son.
Unpackthat 3 years ago
I won't beg for America to return... when America loses it's place in world power system I'll be quite happy about it (you know why? Because otherwise America won't learn, that it overestimates itself...).
I mean, I'm greatful for what America did in World War II for us Germans. But have you ever notived that you never have won a war you started yourself? E.g. Vietnam or Iraq?... So why beg for something that just helps others to improve their power that they don't deserve anymore...?

kinskifreak 3 years ago
I'm from Denmark, we certenly don't hate USA, but i think (for the sake og 45 million americans) who don't have a simple thing as free health Insurance, that there is some sort of solidarity, or if people can't get food on the table every day in such a rich country, there is something very wrong
Skagenin 3 years ago 7
we are a nation of hypocrites, duped into thinking everything will be ok if we just rely on guns and war and free markets. i love my country, but we cant see past our noses and realize that our neighbors security is our security. ppl that never gave a shit about the uninsured before, when it was easier to fix, now see premiums spiraling out of control and cant afford health insurance. i wish i had it, and im a college graduate from uc berkeley. piss poor and pitiful
sammyhorwich 3 years ago 8
well, they dont live in poverty because they are black. that ended in the 60's. now they live in poverty because our economy has gone south and our government is made up of greedy fuckers who wont raise the minimum wage.

LAdude83 3 years ago
Someone says that acting/voting in your best interest is a capitalist thing. Get real, most of the working class has been duped into voting for the Repubs for the last 30 years, as if *that's* in their best interests! No, folks, the unions are in the best interests of the workers! Not the republicans, often not even the Democrats! The union is what dragged us out of poverty, and the loss of our unions is what's dragging us back into poverty.
emmma3042 3 years ago 5
you are so right, i don't care how rich people are, but i do care if people are so poor that they can't live a decent live, and with the richness in USA, this should not be a problem, USA needs a little socialism

the reason why the u.s.a is rich is because we aren't socialists.
playdodream 3 years ago
the reason why there is no really poor people but still a lot of rich people in denmark and scandinavia is because we have some sort of socialism, and thats why everybody also have health care for free, and everybody have a place to live, but maybe the richest people in dk is not as rich as those in USA, but nobody have to worry about if they get sick or their children get sick, nobody have to worry about education it is paid for, "if i get sick you tahe care of me, and if you got sick i
Skagenin 3 years ago 7
It's because we have a socialdemocratic ideology. A mix of state-controlled economy and marketing economy, which we call mixed market economy.
The last 200 years our governments have had a very important issue of focus, the welfare system.

im not for 100% for capitalism or socialism but the reason why the United States has such incredibly wealthy people is because there aren't the elements of socialism that a lot of other countries have

too talk of depression is unpatriotic
eargoggle 3 years ago
too often unpatriotic may be used synonymously with "living with eyes closed" approach to america. it is not unpatriotic to question the current state of the union at all. and there is only one "o" in the word "to" that you were trying to use. too not attend grade-school is unpatriotic.
