great sound, reminds me of the days when I was about 5-7 (1996-8) in Aberdare, now all the coal and stone traffic is hauled by 66 power but a 60 has worked up the line in recent years, I personaly think that the 37 56 and 60's are the best locos around oh and the Hall and Castle class and not too forget the 56xx and Pannier tanks.Great vid
1750 horsepower from an English Electric 12CSVT diesel power unit - Top speed 80mph limited, capable of about 100mph in its youthful prime about 1970.
OMG i live by here, and if i remember right they were emptying thhe mines in the Garw Valley and now the line is all sealed of with weeds and stuff, i know that signal man
ive met that man once aswel, back when i was about 10 years old though ;D, i got to signal a train from maesteg to cardiff central ;D, and a 37 came in on a diversion ;D, the good ol days eh? ;D
This was probably taken around 1996. I think the train had probably just come from one of the disused mines in the Garw Valley which were being cleared at the time.
More likely to be from an opencast coal disposal point (Gwaun cae Gurwen?). I think the mines were closed by the end of the 80s (apart from Tower colliery near Hirwaun - not on the Tondu branch).
thanks for posting all of these videos

What a beautiful tractor clagging away! I love to hear the sound of the turbo whistling on a 37.

I used to jump on the back of these on the way to Llanwern from CWM, and the class 56 from OAKDALE back in the 90's
