One thing I'm hating about this show are the constant and never-ending flashbacks that continually say the same thing over and over. How many times do we need to see and hear each contestant's back story? Do they think the audience is thick or daft? We don't have the memories of goldfish, you know. It's like they're struggling for footage to show.
I dont think they do it because they think we're daft, but I think its for people who missed previous episodes are something.. but it is pretty annoying.
Have they been taught about muscle vs. fat, though? I mean, I worked with a trainer very briefly who never even mentioned it. Also, I've had a nutritionist who never talked about it. I notice on other BL shows from other countries that it is practically never mentioned at all. At least not that is aired.
I STILL don't know how the muscle gain works. When it starts, how much, etc. Perhaps it is something that simply hasn't been addressed to them yet?
the more muscle u build the more fat u burn. Hence weights are great for fat burning - that is low weights and high reps. Body builders who want to bulk up use high weights with low reps. However fat does NOT turn to muscle or vice versa. Your muscles build and as u build and burn the fat you can not only feel/see your muscles underneath again but they also build and develop definition. Hope that helps.
@JDRKGGDS As you work a muscle, the demand for oxygen goes up because oxygen is necessary to make ATP, the energy the muscle uses. The body senses that the muscle's need for oxygen is now greater than what the body can provide, so it goes into "build" mode, adding mitochondria (which convert oxygen and sugar into ATP) within the muscle cells and more capillaries outside the cells to deliver the oxygen. This building adds weight, but the additional mitochondria burn more calories 24/7.
The contestants on BL do a lot of resistance training, but they are using relatively light weights and the goal is more to prevent muscle loss than to build a lot of muscle. (20% of contestants actually LOSE muscle mass, while 80% gain a small amount.) In the first week, huge amounts of glycogen from the liver are mobilized for energy because the body is not conditioned for exercise, and a lot of water is lost when the glycogen is used. This accounts for most of the weight loss in week 1.
i find myself skipping richards team and going to the next Angie segment haha

7:30 put on weight with muscle? ha ha dont think so.
You gain about 5lbs a year, in that week your lucky to gain 1/10th of a pound.

I really respect the effort Mark does. He's really commited to himself and that's something you don't see very often.

What a world of difference between Katey and Fiona (Australia contestant) like day and night.
I think Katey has an infectious smile and I can't wait to see her get even more beautiful.

lisa is a sweatheart, she makes me cry. she can be a contender for later on

Um, you won't gain muscle mass in one week Miriam.
Also, I wish people understood this muscle vs. fat thing. People use it as an excuse for gaining weight and they don't even understand it!
vixky08 2 years ago 14
mmhhmmm. It's a myth/easy excuse people use.
BritainsBiggestLoser 2 years ago 3
Yep definitely. It's half true, but by no means as easy/common as people make out. Ridiculous really.

I heard gillian say in one episode (us) that you CAN lose fat and gain muscle at the same time... but she didn't go into detail
