my stars...I have that LP...I AM OLDER THAN DIRT...haha but it's Baez singing 16 of Dylan's songs and I guess my kids will throw it out when DH and I are plowed under...should I will it to some Baez/Dylan loving fan? haha mine are all hiphop!
To Br0709: No you don't . The thing is that when life seems to slip away, especially when you're high and growing old, you want to go back, go back, go back... You stop just short of the verge...This is not a good place to be. You have to be a very stable human not to retreat to the music and death...
I read a letter written to "Dear Abby" years ago. The writer spoke of her difficult High School years in which she was the class scapegoat, shunned and ignored by her peers...until one day into the school came a total free spirit who befriended her, spent time with her, and made her school days livable. That free spirit was Joan Baez. Even back then, Joan was making a difference. Her befriending of that lonely girl goes down, in my mind, as one of the finest things she ever did.
Those were the times, alright! The finest singers and songs and muscians ever! (Except maybe the Big Band Era). Those were the finest political and historical times too. When I attended Berkeley I remember the military and soldiers all over the grounds. We thought that we could all contribute something to humanity and many of us did. Lana L, SLC, UT
i just wrote a song called "loves is a four letter word"...i thought i better research this..its too good of an idea to not have been done already..turns out i was right! lol....melody and words are differnet in my defence! :)
Played this song over and over, my teenage boys singing along, on a road trip from Pittsburgh to the North Carolina coast this summer. My youngest was fascinated by Joan's voice. It really is meant for her. The other song we couldn't leave alone was "Only a Hobo" by Bob Dylan, this one covered superbly by Rod Stewart.
It was Bob Dylan who overheard her saying it to her former husband. One of his best and most personal songs, though he never recorded it. Joan took it from him before it was even finished.
Like this version but the first time I really listened to it which was just like last year I heard her say it was the man who said love was just a 4 letter word to the wife. It was very upsetting to me. I said to myself, oh, so this is what that song is all about. As teenagers we naturally thought of the sexual innuendo of the song, but being so much older now it's not hard to understand how heart breaking such a statement is.
Just watched American masters on PBS the other night. It was all about Joan Baez. Great Program. I really respect her all the more after seeing that. What an Icon.
SOUNDS like an attempt to sound like LENNONS Beatles.....COMPARED TO SAY''GIRL' OR HELP'' Or'' YOUR GOING TO LOSE THAT GIRL ''... but Joan is cool ... But the song saggs in the middle and lumbers on 'n on.. like this song really is taking up space.. with a grand title going nowhere fast... not a HARD DAYS work by mr 'Zina-mini'....oh an the backing music is truly fucking shite
@Br0709 Well, I was born before that time--I was a teenager when Joan Baez, Dylan, Donovan, Pete Seeger, Simon & Garfunkel, PP&M, and all the rest were in their heyday. It was a lot of fun, believe me. Joan Baez was a lot prettier in person. Wonderful talent, too.
@Br0709 I was a teen then--and it was GREAT! Everybody was somebody. Everybody took a stand for what he or she believed in--and for what others believed in. We were the nation's conscience, holding her accountable for the injustices done in the name of "Manifest Destiny", holding up the ugliness of bigotry, racism, and war like a mirror; forcing America to look at its crimes against its fellow citizens, then demanding and challenging the nation to do better for its future's--and our--sake.
Thanks. I love this version-don't think I have heard Bob sing it?

She was a very progressive woman. The tribute to (Joe Hill) a famous Labor organizer, beautifully done by Joan Baez.

Sandra, questa canzone era nella cassetta che avevi preparato per l'estate del 1981.
Quando andammo in Calabria e Sicilia con Mario e Mario. Con la Fulvia che si spegneva per strada.
Ti ricordi?
