@tvsux1 If that was the case why did he use such an elaborate allegory? Wouldn't it have been more effective just to say "if you go out of societal norm you will be viewed as a moron, even tho ur right?" Why take 3 hours to create such a symbolic mess that nobody has any idea wtf ur talking about? I read that the allegory is supposed to ecco what we believe to be true reality. The whole "what is a cat" argument. It's all bs if you ask me. I hope you're right.
@tvsux1 The allegory has to do with Platos' Theory of Forms. He's not talking about being out of societal norm. Google it. The Theory of Forms is fucking retarded. The Allegory of the Cave is his explanation of it. That's what this video is about. I think you are misinterpreting the Cave thing.
although I do not agree with plato's cosmology, I do understand it because from his perspective and presuppositions, it makes sense. you just believe that his presuppositions are bullshit :p the essence of something isn't only a concept that exists because it is in our heads but rather we know it because it is an essence and the world around us is made up of reflections of those essences. His message is that our world is not perfect, and essences aren't displayed here perfectly either.
Interesting critique- the example of a playstation controller seems to illustrate essence better than animal examples- a video game controller doesn't have to look like anything- it just has to control video games, that's it's essence. What the essence of a cat would be- I dunno.
I understood "The cave" as a person losing their subjective "faith" to the objective reality. It was so similar to the experience I had when I lost my religion. Really weird.
Man, when Plato sees this, he's going to feel totally pwned!
Anyway, this is as good a summary of Platonic Philosophy as I've come across. And, contrary to other thoughts, I still follow my Philosophy prof's comment that if you can't sum up a concept for someone at a bus stop, then you don't really understand it.
Also, I'll never forgive Plato for coming up with the type of relationship where I have to hang around that hot, smart girl, and never actually make a move on her.
so let me understand, if on Freb. 2nd the groundhog sees his shadow, it's not really him, it's just his reflection from the fire behind him...yes, yes , I GET IT!!
I'm with Protagoras: We're the ones who call things this or that, true or false. There's no sense or use in talking about the "really real" or essences.
Hey Zombiemouse, I like your video. What kind of camera have you been using on your videos lately. I think it does some cool things. Is it the Playstation eye? Thanks I hope you and Anastasia are doing fine.

Your realty is as you perceive it, and your realty is subject to change. It should change as you learn more.

The point is nothing is eternal. Not even reality.
