The main reason the 50 states have a federal government is for DEFENSE!!! Defense is one of the only things our federal government should be funding. The federal government should not be involved in education, retirement, or other social issues.

Well said. I am 100% behind the "Stop The Raid ON Social Security" bill. As a disabled person, I can tell you my Social Security income is all I have. It may be all you have some day and you pay for it every time you pay taxes out of your paycheck. Also, let me say the No Child Left Behind program as it stands is a joke. That is the fundamental problem with any type of economic social program, you planned your life with the expectation that the system will protect you and when it can't, it pushes you into poverty.

I understand that social security will not be there for my generation, so I am forced to take a % of my earnings and save, while also paying social security tax. I can only pray that I wont aquire any serious medical disability.

DeMint is a joke hiding behind the failed policy of "conservatism". Even the conservatives abandoned conservatism. The republicans were in charge of the house for 12 years, the senate, presidency, majority of governors and arguably the supreme court for half that time. And it resulted in the largest influx of illegals in US history. The largest deficit spending in US history. And a "preemptive" war with no plan to win the peace or an exit strategy.

DeMint's response to the Union Address sounds like another political speech-"we will address healthcare," "we will fix social security", "we will fix the borders'" "we will simplify the tax code," etc., etc. Enough talk, SHUT UP AND JUST DO IT ! Politicians are elected (i.e., hired by us) to fix these systems. Maybe we need to fire more of them and get some people in office that can get results! If I ran my business the way we run Washington - more talk than action, I'd be out of business.

We agree with most of your comments, however you failed to comment on the Presidents big push on "Free Trade" which, in itself is forcing the loss of jobs (good paying) out of our country, and we must stop and reverse these free trade agreements! Look at China, we entered into an agreement, however it is and continues to be a one way street, as do many others! We buy they sell!  You our legislators are placing our nation on a fasttrack to hell in a hand basket!

DeMint should review another Republican's views on the military-industrial complex before endorsing more money for the military and purchasing equipment that is not needed in today's world, e.g., why should we build aircraft carriers in a world where most of our military problems come from terrorists. Tax cuts should be for those who DO need them, not those who DON'T need them.

It seems to me that if you pay taxes, you should get a tax cut, irrespective of how politically popular it may be to "soak the evil rich."  The top rate of tax is currently 35%. How much higher would you like it to be? Being coerced into paying anything more than a 3rd of your income to leviathan is simply ludicrous.

I'm not sure about your statistics regarding who pays what. I do know that I pay a bundle! Former Pres Eisenhower - who should know about regarding military spending - spoke of the M-I Complex. By cutting back on unnecessary military spending, it would not be necessary to 'soak the rich'. If the Federal government continues to spend, however - especially on unnecessary wars - someone needs to pay for it. Those who profit from the expenditures should help to pay for the expense.

Bush has largely been a failure. It is time for true conservatives to recapture the party so we can start winning landslide elections again like we did in the 80's and mid-90's. Nominating a pro-war Democrat (McCain) isn't how you do that.
