Steve. cant make sence of your comment?? the wheel is made of plastic YES, but 1 I cant find a metal wheel with a solid run on it - as degus tend to break and snap their legs easly on the spoked ones, and 2 it will be removed pronto if they start nibbleing at it because degus cannot like us humans digest plastic. DAD
Unfortunatly the wheel is made of plastics. If they gnaw at it, they can swallow small splinters of it, which get even more sharpend by the gastric acid. The worst case is a sliced up stomach. That's why degus should not have any plastic furniture.
Many degus do nibble at the grid. Mine stopped doing that, when I provided them with a suitable cage. Small cages easly cause behavioural problems.
My Degus have plenty too nibble - stone, cuttlefish, fresh sterilised apple tree branches, and the cage is RSPCA approved for Dagu care.
These Degus are re homed and have completely stopped nibbling plastic since I have had them. The wheel was with them for 2 days before I took this video - and there is still no evidence of them having chewed the plastic - if there was I'D REMOVE IT AT ONCE.
As you mention the RSPCA. Can you tell me wich measures they recommend for degu cages? I am quite interested in the common standards in other countries and could not find out much. And the information I could find were from private web sites. Nothing from a reliable institution.
I can also tell you what is "officially" recommend in germany. It is a size of 100x50x100 cm for two degus according to the TVT (translated: Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare).

100cm long x 60cm wide x 60cm high and a solid non mesh floor is the minimum RSPCA allowance for a pair of Degu's.
