Hahah this is hilarious!!!! and to all the haters, yes not all newfies talk like this but you would be surprised how many actually do sound like this...anyways to each his own...great job ...cheers from Newfoundland!
Hey everyone, I'm a singer/songwriter from Newfoundland! I play guitar (kind of) I have original songs uploaded I write soft rock, love songs and piano pieces. I would love to know what you guys think! If I could get just a couple of people to listen, I'd be so grateful! Thanks!
@TaylorSfan1977 For example if a Canadian like you ignorantly says you don`t have an accent, then an Australian meets you, he`s going to say jeez you sound different to me, you have an accent, you don`t speak english like I do, therefore you have an accent. Everyone who speaks the english language has an accent. You THINK you speak ``normal`` but to people in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, South Africa etc, you have an accent. Face it you`re making yourself sound like an idiot.
@TaylorSfan1977 Now I get it you`re 10, so you don`t understand what I`m saying, well kid you have an accent like it or not you do. What language do you think I was speaking when I replied to you. Btw it`s Idiot, not Idoit. So I guess you are an idiot, shouldn`t you been in school or something.
@TravelYourself I think what EpicGibson is referring to is your translation of the dialogue. Everyone on the island knows Mark Critch is a Newfoundlander. It seems he was just expressing his opinion that your translation was, not funny. It's actually quite ironic that you mistranslated his comment as well, haha. Either way, I enjoyed it. Great video!
Listen bye's, I'll tell you! Me I been here in Ontario for 10 years and I only talks like dat when I'm talkin to anodder newf. I works 'ard suppressing me accent cause nobody understands me when I talks normal. Me hubby says when I gets on da phone wit me mudder he dont have no clue what all we is talkin about (he's from Ontario, you see). I loves Newfoundland and I wishes I could move back home tomorrow.
i'm born and raised in Newfoundland, wouldn't have it any other way. i understand every word. i talk pretty well exactly like that :) fast, and with that amazing accent! Newfies rock <3
@allysonwheelie No Allyson I believe it's called India because the type of beer "India Pale Ale" was originally brewed in the UK and was exported to India and the way it was made made it last longer and kept better/longer as it was sent to India - search "India Pale Ale" on wikipedia and you will see more info :)
Newfounland is so awesome! The people who live there are one of the most amazing people in the world. They're extremely genereous. very friendly and boy do they know how to party!?
I was born in Newfoundland and i know i mean i know when i say i know,i know i do NOT have an accent! well maybe a little but i sound like my flordian friend
Theres a girl in my class from Newfoundland. I can tell because of how friendly she is, then she told me. Haha, she calls everybody "Mainlanders" all the time. I love Newfoundland :P
ive gone to cadet camp in NB and most of the people there where from NFLD ive gone to that camp for about 6ish years. and some words stuck. i find myself calling St John or St. Johns, St. Jahn or st Jahns. with a "a" sound in it i cant say it like a mainlander anymore (im from mainland Nova Scotia). ill put s' at the end of my nouns without realizing it sometimes. since i got alot of friends from newfoundland sometimes ill say "waddya at"
@TravelYourself Sounded good to me.....could have been me buddy talking about the weekend....too funny....it's hilarious when out of the province to talk like this and really screw with mainlander's heads. Side note....I can speak like this....or in such a way NO ONE knows I am from Newfoundland
You can't overdo the accent. No matter how insane you try to make it sound, there is somebody out there who is even more incomprehensible than you could ever be.
I have no problem understanding them, and I don't think they sound that odd, haha. Guess I can't tell since I'm a newfoundlander myself, but my "accent" isn't this strong....I don't think.
Ha, Ha, Ha. very informative & entertaining video. As all Newfoundlanders know Newfoundland is many things to many people. There are originally the English, French,Portugese, Irish came in the days of the early 1800's bacallieu fishery, a smattering of chinese found their way there and in 1938 a Mr. Davis was the only African American man on the island. also recordings were done in 1960's in outports of rare authentic dialects dating back hundreds of years before electric, radio or television.
I lol hard that accent. A guy I worked with was originally from NF and he speak exactly like that. I had to remind him to keep it slow or else he would lose me. The funny thing is, I went to NF last month and traveled from west to east coast. None on the people I met have that accent at all. They do have accent but not like this one which is difficult to comprehend.
Sad part about this is how outsiders will view this....we Newf's can laugh at ourselves....but...some take it as gospel and leave with a bad impression of Newfoundlanders.
There's an app for iPhone and Android that translates Newfie into Canadian. It is called Whaddaya App and was made by some guys in St. John's. You can also find it by looking up Newfoundland in the app store. :)
NL is a great Darwinian study of language evolution (or not). The many years of isolation in the many "outports" generated isolated populations that evloved (or not) their language is isolation from the many others.
I was born in ST. John's moved to america when I was 2.My mam always calls me her goofy newfie I am saving my money to come and visit but I would love to learn some of the little things I missed out on growing up in America this vid was so helpful! Thanks!
Take this clip for what it is meant guys ...Newfoundlanders are proud tp make fun of themselves ...all in good humour, our language is unique , coming from a mixture of cultures...
Its no joke the way they talk! My Grandparents aren't even from there they're from New Brunswick and even after two generations being born in Ontario my Mother and I are either not understood by the way we talk or we get "You're from the Maritimes aren't you?" Be proud of Newfie/Maritime accents...it makes us unique...no matter where you come from in the East.
I love how when I am around people with a stronger accent then myself I always find myself getting into the dialect. I also notice people often drop the a fair bit of the dialect when talking with people not from here.
Oh right thanks! I'm Irish and it sounds pretty familiar to me, Cork accent specifically. You'd definitely know that it has been derived from Irish atleast! :) pretty cool.
@Sk3elly no its what it is its a Newfoundland accent, Newfoundland is a province in Canada. Originally from way long ago it was Irish when the first Irish settlers arrived however it has become quite its own thing now :)
A month ago I was in Erins Pub. (An Irish pub on Water Street)
A pleasent young lady was talking to the bar tender. I detected a distinct accent. I was going to ask what part of Ireland are you from but I decided I may as well ask where in Cork were you brought up.
Instead I decided to play the fool and ask and I quote" What part of the Southern Shore are you from?" She was from Port Kirwin, not cork, Not ireland but rather about 60 miles away from that St.John's pub.

Would have been much more real and authentic if you went around St.John's and around the bay talking to locals, rather than these two hamming it up for the camera.
