Suzanne explaing the meaning of the title "Knight Moves":
"The next song [Knight Moves] [...] is called like that because the person I was writing it for was behaving in such a way that he was taking one step forward and then he'd take two to the side, and then he'd take one step back and then he'd take two to the side..."
In concert, London School of Economics, England, October 24, 1985
@JefferyWhiganshire Fascinating. Thank you! I haven't listened to this album for at least a decade since my (extensive) LP collection has been ignored in the digital era. Regrettably, at that, now that I revisit this after so long. But it is interesting how my own maturity has influenced my perceptions too. I performed a dance that I choreographed to this song in my senior year of high school in 1990. Wonder how this knowledge would have influenced that if had known then...
This probably sounds silly, but when I listen to this song, all I can think of is Margo Roth Speigelman from Paper Towns by John Green. It just sounds like how she feels, when it's all slipping out of her control and she's frantically trying to bring it all back together, while fixing everyone else.
@ines0488 I always used to think that too. Now I think it could also be about a man who is cheating on his wife- from the point of view of the mistress, who has conflicting feelings of love for the man and pity for his wife?
@gaiawingz I made the same comment on another Youtube video of her 2000 Montreux Jazz performance of this song. Well, I might have been a bit more rash in my judgement, but that's just nuance... :-)

I LOVE Ms. Vega, but there is not much to choose from on You Tube...I'd love to hear more studio tracks: 'Gypsy", 'Undertow", anything from her 1st two albums.
You said it. From that point of view this song has that profound description of the queen's characteristics beneath thecold-hearted surface. All in all this song makes me shiver; it is impulsive, but then again, very smooth.
how beautiful is this. Ms Vega has a style all of her own. kind of a unique blend of folk and pop music. thanks for loading...

I think this is the first time I've realized this is a rock waltz. Weird.

Not sure how useful it is but I found this:

"The queen and the soldier"-- sorry I don´t understand all of the lyrics but it´s as beautiful as all of the album

I'm surprised this song has so few comments & views -- this is [in my estimation] one of her very best tracks.

This song helps me te understand the queen in "the queen and the soldier" better. Solitude is the only place to go.
