That doesn't accurately describe how the different geological layers have been dated. Geologists used the types of fossils found in the layers as well as radiometric dating and the specific characteristics of igneous rock found in certain layers which have unique signature of being from the Devonian era for example. A true blow to evolution would be if just one mammal fossil was found in the Devonian layer, but it hasn't happened yet. Not one.
