Your iPod renames all of your files into just letters, so all your music isn't named. It's a nightmare, and therfore this doesn't actually work, unless you want to go through thousands of songs and rename them all of course.

Actually, you are mistaken. There are three possible reasons for this; 1., You are a fucking dumb ass and didn't actually try this for yourself to see that you are mistaken. 2., You are using an iPod touch or iPhone. 3., You did not send the music file that you made on your desktop to the proper default iTunes music location (found in preferences).

The third reason is usually unnecessary on newer generations. iTunes will recognize the files and restore all of the information (song name, artist, etc.) that was on your old computer. All of the information in preferences is saved, therefore if you edited your preferences on your old computer they will be the same on your new one, regardless if the song was purchased on the iTunes store or imported from an mp3.

I did this with three of my friends iPods (all different generations, one with Windows XP, and two with Windows Vista) and experienced no problems. All of the music, podcasts, and movies were restored and organized just like on their old computers.

When you add the file you made to your library itunes will automatically rename them. You do not have to go through any files and give them names.
