You have the right opinions on these issues. I remember when the danish goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, did'nt want to speak with the press, they just potrayed him as a grumpy and unsocial person. i think that the reporters/journalists have nothing big to report about, so they come here and find someone who has billions of views and completely insult them and try to reveal them as a fake, but they always fail, because reporters think that we are just trying to get views and become internet famous by planning everything out and cannot go wrong, but people like you and blunty3000 are just trying to please the viewers, (us)

I'm 50 and I love this guy. He reminds me of my grandfather Jim, in Proserpine Australia. Always an evening story while he drank a XXXX beer in a skippy jar listening to the wireless radio. I miss those days so much and I learned so much from Jim.
We watch and we love to watch because, almost, all of us have lost a parent or a grandparent and we miss them so very much. Seeing you, there, is like a link to those missing from our lives and it comforts us to be in your company. I think the numbers speak for themselves and it is easy to predict, that Mr. Sutherland supercillious criticism will not make one iota of difference. The paper will be still good to wrap the fish though. They still have that advantage over you, or us.

John Sutherland obviously lacks what is most important in life and that is people skills, something Peter you most definately have. In journalism, happy happy smiley news does not sell. Negativity sells newspapers and because the media can't "get you" that is what they so desperately resort to.
Seems to me anytime someone refuses to bow down to the medias requests, all of a sudden, they begin to write slanderous things about you. Don't take it to heart...thats how the media is and thats how the media will always be. Its like them saying "Okay...you don't wish to cooperate? TAKE THIS!"

Newspaper hacks can be such annoying pests. I'm glad you recognize it for the inconsequential noise it is. Someone needs to give the columnist the definition of "hypocrite" -- a column on how tech is stealing attention/power from the "elite" and giving it to marginalized members of society is a textbook example of banality... I think your popularity is because you stand out; there are plenty of us who are more interested in the sort of videos you're making than in the usual bland stuff we get in the mainstream media.
Youtube is threatening to a lot of these mainstream media types; the journo believes that you have to be a "professional" to be allowed to communicate via the mass media. The popularity of your blogs proves him wrong and also shows more people want to watch you than read his articles. He wanted to be provocative to get attention.
I've become very close with my Grandmother. Without hearing about things from the people that were there, a person has no sense of reality. Mass media is wonderful, but on a day to day basis it's mostly fantasy, and fear of "banality" fuels the need for fiction. You are tremendously important (and interesting btw) simply because you are a real person.
Don't worry about a critique doing what his title suggests. And let's be real; you've had a heart attack. If any part of this stresses you out, avoid it. It's not worth it, and you don't have to reply to every single comment or email. It's not possible.

Crazy stuff, A friend of mind has famous parents. He was having his birthday party and some how a very well know newspaper had got into the party and took photos. All the photos would have contained the banner and balloons as the party was in a small hall. Because he wasn't has Important as his parents in the sense he wasn't famous. He was rub out of the photo a long with the banner and the balloons and whole new story was Invented to fit the photo. So nothing surprise me with newspapers.

I have pretty much just two people in my real life and it helps me a lot to watch your videos. I'm 30 years old but still have a lot I'm trying to figure out about life, and it helps me to learn from your perspective and experience. I admire you for your courage and wisdom to be yourself. BenLoka has posted a video 'Day in the Life of a Hater' that you might like, although it's about youtube haters, not journalist ones. Thanks for your videos :)

i think that the reporters/journalists have nothing big to report about, so they come here and find someone who has billions of views and completely insult them and try to reveal them as a fake, but they always fail, because reporters think that we are just trying to get views and become internet famous by planning everything out and cannot go wrong, but people like you and blunty3000 are just trying to please the viewers, (us)

My comments were because I had been following James Brown links after his death and instead was redirected here. I had already viewed some fraudulent videos with "James Brown" in the title just to get people to watch their video.
I'm not sure why 'James Brown' was in the title here but I overeacted and I apologize. Evidently geriatric has quite the following and seeing someone his age using technology and having something to say is quite admirable.

Part 3: One last note, that reporter must be pretty stupid to be astonished at the fact that his insignificant 1000 word column in a local newspaper won't get as many views as your video, which has been posted on THE INTERNET. Anyone with an internet connection can access your video quite easily. However, I imagine it would be pretty hard for some dude in Uganda to get a copy of that newspaper.

I'm 50 and I love this guy. He reminds me of my grandfather Jim, in Proserpine Australia. Always an evening story while he drank a XXXX beer in a skippy jar listening to the wireless radio. I miss those days so much and I learned so much from Jim.

Seems to me anytime someone refuses to bow down to the medias requests, all of a sudden, they begin to write slanderous things about you. Don't take it to heart...thats how the media is and thats how the media will always be. Its like them saying "Okay...you don't wish to cooperate? TAKE THIS!"

Newspaper hacks can be such annoying pests. I'm glad you recognize it for the inconsequential noise it is. It can be more of a problem for people when their actual paying work is panned by these arrogant reviewers. Strange how people actually believe these things they read in the papers. Mr. Media doesn't know what he is talking about. Like I said before, it would have been a great thing if all grandparents had been able to create videos for future generations. It is all about leaving a trace. Imagine all the history, folk lore, and family tradition that has been lost, because it was not recorded. I would give anything to have recorded my Aunt cooking my favorite dish. You keep up the good work, and remember we love what you are doing!

Speaking as someone with a degree in English from an internationally top-ranking uni... Someone needs to give the columnist the definition of "hypocrite" -- a column on how tech is stealing attention/power from the "elite" and giving it to marginalized members of society is a textbook example of banality... Unoriginal authors have whined that since the printing press came along! (He must be jealous, knowing your tales will likely be studied for years, while his columns won't.)

I've become very close with my Grandmother. Without hearing about things from the people that were there, a person has no sense of reality. Mass media is wonderful, but on a day to day basis it's mostly fantasy, and fear of "banality" fuels the need for fiction. Crazy stuff, A friend of mind has famous parents. He was having his birthday party and some how a very well know newspaper had got into the party and took photos. All the photos would have contained the banner and balloons as the party was in a small hall. Because he wasn't has Important as his parents in the sense he wasn't famous. He was rub out of the photo a long with the banner and the balloons and whole new story was Invented to fit the photo. So nothing surprise me with newspapers.

The journalist is missing the whole point. It's not about banality -- it's about true freedom of the press combining with freedom of speech. YOU decide what you have to tell that's worth your time and WE decide what we want to watch that's worth ours. Views, subscriptions, and favorites are like votes on YouTube. I have a suspicion that if your critics were to post vlogs here as well, yours would be far more popular than all of theirs put together. Nice work, sir.

Hi Peter, that guy is venomous. Don't you worry about anything. I would have to agree he is envious of you and that there are so many people in the world who look and wait for your posting like I do. He says you're grumpy?? and other inappropriate adjuctives. I don't think I'm crazy but I could swear that you are a very upbeat and informative human. Yes, Peter, we YouTubies DO understand what we're all about. The journalist in the Guardian oozes jealousy. Some people can't understand how the simple things in life, the conversations with friends, new and old, are what drive us and make us happy. If you are "banal" then banal is the new cool. And regarding your story about the toilet paper -- now you have a use for that Guardian article.

he referenced the sun because it's the biggest selling newspaper in the country. i think the mail reference was more derogatory! the article does make sense though. are they brilliant blogs that deserve all the sycophantic attention they're getting or are they being viewed because its really the only blog of its kind viewed by a majority of people who are missing grandparents and want to feel a connection with an 'older' person without having to go out into the world and make a real connection?

this journalist went with a story that someone else had told him. he did not do the old fashioned footwork that reporters used to do. he needed a story and went with an angle that was false. this is a dangerous and popular trend. what a way to "live"

You nailed it Peter. Your perspective on the whole affair is right on the money. Though a Yank, I had the opportunity to live in London for 3 wonderful years and my impression of English press was that if it's not run by the BBC it's nothing more than desparate attempt grab readers. When one thinks about it, the only realy news worth a damn is business and sports.
