@Gingervention They only said that because the japs were very heaviley outnumbered. Every single jap on that island knew they were going to die but it was just a question of how soon? They were ordered to stay on the island to the death and fight for their home land.
I agree. The film clips are great, but with propaganda narrating like this added and calling it "a documentary" and then finding out that it is awarded?!... makes wanna puke.
My Great Uncle was killed on Iwo Jima, He was a in the 9th Marines. He got shot in the back of the head as he tired to carry his freind to a medic "Corp Men"
"I want you boys to hurry up and whip these Germans so we can get out to the Pacific to kick the shit out of the purple-pissing Japanese, before the Goddamn MARINES get all the credit!" Lt General George Patton, US Army 1945
Some of the scenes in here cut off too early. That show's that there is more to these videos than meets the eye. The Pentagon cut out the "Bloody" scenes.
@nickname4200 That was an artillery bomb. The man who shot that footage died from his wounds because of the that, Including the three men who jumped into the hole...
skitzostudios. I have always wondered, since I was a boy, if that Marine survived the action on Iwo. Now I know. Is your Dad still with us? God love your Father. My Dad was a Parachute Rigger in the Navy during the War. I lost him in 2006.
I'm not saying today's conflicts are a cake-walk... but compared to WW2 and battles like Iwo Jima we should be thankful for not having a 3rd World War.
Respect to all military serviceman (and woman, of course!)
well its good to no that if there was ever enother war which i hope there will not be these japs will be on are side this time funny how it all changes .....
@amoswt yeah and you do that and some other dicator decides your country should be mauled and destroyed----The best Defense is a MASSIVE OFFENSIVE CAPABILITY!
dude if ur japanese or american dont be sayin shit both sides did what it took to try to save the island and to take it both sides fought and died just watch letters from iwo jima and all of it its a great movie and for once in the movies ive seen it doesnt really create a debate between the people who fought in the siege
My dad took pictures of bones on a beach. I'm pretty sure it's at Iwo Jima because there is also a picture of mt. suribachi in the album. I think the pictures were taken in the 50s. Were there really that many bones washed up on the beaches there?
@brian74931 I"m absolutely serious. I luck out because it is a close up, and he's wearing his glasses, which helped. Many figures in these old films are just a person moving past camera quickly. He likewise was very angry when we gave it back to Japan.
@openflix I showed him the footage on vcr years ago and yes, he confirmed it...but I DO know my own father! ha! It's just lucky the photographer took such a close up. There aren't many that close in the picture. Pop died in 2005.
US gave Iwo Jima back to Japan in the 1990s. That was fucked beyond belief. Do you know how many brave Marines that died taking that island away from the Japs?
Illogical and wrongful thinking on the US part to hand it back over.
@killersaad 20000 japs died, to defend and 26000 americans wounded out of that 26000 nearly 7000 dead, the marines earned that island after they fought for it tooth and nail with those weak and gutless japanese shits, they never should have given it back, just to remind them of how weak and gutless they really where and still are.
@gagsterde You had preferred they had come out rushing in great waves or something? What do you want? Did you see the start of this movie? They were dug in like rats for a reason btw the Vietnamese showed that digging in like rodents can be very successful against an enemy with superior firepower.Japanese soldiers were so tough and willing to die that they waited for the nukes and dropped them as soon as they were ready on the same soldiers kids still took 2 nukes before they surrendered.
@mountainstandardtime Don't fan the flames of hate. What happened is long over. Haven't we made up yet? Besides, take your island back, we don't need it as an air field to bomb you anymore.
