Gotye could have played this himself (or let a guitarist play it) and it wouldn't get as much hype. SO much music sounds alike, and a sample or direct copy is allowed as long as it is under a whole bar or 3 seconds (don't remember the exact rule.)
Remember when hiphop sampling was being critisized for "stealing" back in the 80's? The message was PAYING TRIBUTE to what was sampled. It's not like Gotye has thought "I'm gonna "steal" this and hope nobody notices!"
My gosh. What's all this Gotye "stealing" etc? It's a sample which he got permission for. Tons of music comes from samples like this. Tons of his first album had samples and if you watch his video for making his latest album he samples his own playing.
@jordan10103 no stealing. this is taken from Gotye's video:
Contains a sample of the recording Seville as performed by Luiz Bonfa. Courtesy of Geffen Records, under license from Universal Music Enterprises. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Written by Luiz Bonfa and published by Sasqua Music. Used by permission.
Gotye played this one on his recent Australian tour as an interlude into Somebody that I used to know, was pretty random but a good segue into his song! LIKE!!
Amazing amount of credit goes to this song for one of the hottest tracks on radio at the moment. I was blown away by this unique fresh new sound coming through my speakers until I discovered this. I still love it though, and all credit to the art of remixing which I have mixed feelings as a songwriter. Thoughts from other songies out there?
Thank you for posting this here. This reminds me of the 60's & 70's movies from the west U.S. Not sure if I heard it before, but I read of the sample of the 1st 2 seconds from the 'Goyte' song.

@jordan10103 he sought permissions from Luiz Bonfa's son who is the owner of his estate before using it actually.
