Anyone else notice the little jab at philosophy? I think as science grows philosophy will kinda disappear or what's left of it will merge into science. He kind of put philosophy and religion in the same category.
@hrmIwonder " 'Pure' philosophy must just concede impotence and retreat into conservative conceptual anthropology until the advance of science puts it out of its misery."
I do wonder why some folkies are prone to take a word, such like: consciousness, and to impart upon it a non-materialistic definition. Doing this denies any legitimacy of the research and work being done to better understand the mind. Like many discoveries that have transpired in the last few decades, we do do not have to wait very much longer for a really functional and rational mapping of the mind with respect to its biological components. This will shed much needed clarity on many things.
Umm, I think Koch made it clear here that science isn't interested in explaining consciousness. They're interested in explaining neural processes in our brains. Big difference. It's like explaining a poem in not in terms of imagery it describes, but in terms of its verse structure.
oh, I may have not articulated my post well enough. I had tried to mention of how there are presently quite a few passionate scientists who both love the creative process & of the fields of study that map & explore all things relating to the brain and mind. Within our generation, we may be pleasantly surprised to see the placing aside of some very misleading unknowns for more vibrant, wonderful & useful knowns. Of course, this is an opinion & that I love to read about these thingies. Best wishes
I think the Brain-Body/Matter dualism is a false dichotomy. Consciousness is an emergent property of the complexity of the neuronal system. Of course, we do not yet understand it completely.
John Searle sheds much light and rationality on this subject.
I will have to keep an eye on Cristof Koch now, too.

Consciousness is what we try to perceive.

@hrmIwonder to be so arrogant as to assume that philosophy is only concerned with science is your mistake... and you are forgiven for that.

I love his accent even more than his hair. I really like when philosophers talk with passion about their work. Slavoj Zizek is another one.

@StevenErnest I agree that brain/mind dualism is a false dichotomy. Also, I would add V.S. Ramachandrand to your list of people to watch.

Oh, yes! I've seen him in several PBS documentaries. He's done some amazing brain research.
