The papacy, the veneration (not worship) of saints and Mary, the use of devotional aids, and other things go back to the ancient church. Henry VIII didn't want reform, he wanted a male heir and wrenched an entire nation away from its spiritual heritage to get one. Anglicans reclaimed traditions, honor Mary and saints, use rosaries, have "Mass", etc. Read about the Oxford Movement in the CoE.

That's one reason, of many, that I got away from the Episcopal church. Although there are some who stand on the Word Of God and don't just see it as "metaphors", this "tolerance" boils down to watering down the Gospel to make it "politically correct" so as not to "offend" anyone. Jesus said He would be a "Stone of stumbling and a ROCK of offense." What does that mean to US? Preach the Word Of God unashamedly. Remember the parable of the house built on a ROCK vs SAND! ; )

The papacy, the veneration (not worship) of saints and Mary, the use of devotional aids, and other things go back to the ancient church. Henry VIII didn't want reform, he wanted a male heir and wrenched an entire nation away from its spiritual heritage to get one. Anglicans reclaimed traditions, honor Mary and saints, use rosaries, have "Mass", etc. Read about the Oxford Movement in the CoE.

Catholics, Anglicans and the Orthodox pray to saints, but prayer isn't just about worship, it's also about conversation. Do you have a photo of a deceased loved one? Do you ever hold it or touch it, remember and speak to that person? If so, is that idolatry? All things come from God. The saints hear us, and point us to Christ.

Well...I suppose one way to describe it, based on the tremendous history behidn it, is a uniquely English form of the Catholic Church. But in the 16th century, the Anglican Church broke with Rome and not just because Henry VIII wanted a divorce but for extensive political and financial reasons. The Anglican Church formed its own liturgy, started using English as its liturgical language, and looked to Canterbury instead of Rome for leadership.

Bear in mind that the words "English" and "England" come from the word "Angles" who were a German tribe that, along with the Saxons (another German tribe) began moving from the Continent into Britain in about the 4th-5th century A.D. Britain became known as "Angle-land," which evolved into the word England.
It's always good to learn the etymology of words, to know where they came from and what the original concept of the word was.

One thing that I do truly resent is how the conservatives have decided to define the word "Anglican" in such a way as to mean "only the people who agree with us." That's ridiculous, no one died and appointed them God so they can define words for everyone else, and if I don't agree with them, that does not mean I am not Anglican.
Reclaim the word Anglican for ALL members of the Church.

I love the Anglican Church. I'm over here in the US, so it's Episcopalian, but I love the overall message. It's pretty much just love first.

Anglicans are not afraid to think. We do not have to agree with all opinions but we allow all to express their faith without judgement. We have always had a wide breadth of views from Bishop Spong to the conservative members. We are not a church with one set of statements that all must subscribe to in order to be members. What we agree on is how we worship. We learn tolerance somthing the world could desperately use.

That's one reason, of many, that I got away from the Episcopal church. Although there are some who stand on the Word Of God and don't just see it as "metaphors", this "tolerance" boils down to watering down the Gospel to make it "politically correct" so as not to "offend" anyone. Jesus said He would be a "Stone of stumbling and a ROCK of offense." What does that mean to US? Preach the Word Of God unashamedly. Remember the parable of the house built on a ROCK vs SAND! ; )

Not bad, but I'd add more people's pics (and remove Spong). How 'bout adding Kate Winslet, JK Rowling, Willa Cather? And then there's classic literary Anglicans such as Jane Austen, Keats, Kipling, Dickens, George Orwell, Lewis Carroll, TS Eliot. Charles Darwin was presumably Anglican.

Darwin, God rest him, was an agnostic all through life and only wanted to be an Anglican priest so he could work on Sundays and shoot birds every other day of the week. But yeah, C.S. Lewis should definitely be featured.

Well, Church of Ireland is technically Anglican and that's the church that his mother belonged to. His father however was a Roman Catholic and both parents agreed to raise Bono Anglican.

He could be like me, an Anglican in full communion with Rome! As an Anglican-Use Catholic, I get the best of both worlds. It is not for all Anglicans, but it is an option for those who want to be in full communion with the Barque of St. Peter, yet not lose one's Anglican identity.

tennantesque: Colin Powell was given poor information, and I do believe that to this very day, he regrets (and hard) ever going into Iraq. I've read some things that indicated that Bush, Cheney, Rummy and Wolfowitz really threw him under the bus something fierce. If he has forgiven them for how they treated him, he really IS a Christian of great stature.

There is reason to believe that Colin Powell is no more wicked than any other Secretary of State ever was, or any other US Army general ever was. He's a honorable human being who has MY respect, at least. He has done much in his life that is actually very worthy.
