The word Sarplaninac derives from the Albanian word sharr (=saw) because of the sharp shape of the mountains in Sharr. This dogbreed is Illyrian and has existed in the Sharrmountains long before you Carpathians came to the Balkans.

This dog has nothing to do with Albania, what the hell?
It was bred in south Serbia (known as Servia) during the Ottoman empire. Nationalist SERBS gave it the "Illyrian Sheepdog" name in '39 because they sought to distance themselves from Austria and Germany (Illyria is the entire region across the Adriatic from Italy). During Yugoslavia, the name was changed to "Sar Planinac" where the breed is used the most.

Go look up what I said, history is plainly there. Ovtcharka variant was imported from Gruzija and bred with a local sheepdog. Albania was created in 1912, this dog existed long before it's declaration in '39, the country had nothing to do with the creation of this dog.
Pan-Slavic movement used to refer to the Yugoslav area as "Illyria" long before the modern Pan-Albanian movement started saying that Albanians are descended from Illyrians as a way to claim all of Balkans.
