  • Way too much soprano. Because of that you can't hear the beautiful moving parts.

  • I always get chills when the girls start singing. <3

  • Guys start off wayyyy to loud! singing this song for preformance saturday...i love it! but they could have done better ^

  • SI ES DOLLOOOOOORRRRRRR

  • why did they start on forte?? That's a weird change, they shoulda followed the dynamic markings, woulda sounded WAY cooler...just saiyan >.> haha, otherwise, good job....except for soprano's, you guys really shouldn't be fortississimo...or however thats spelled XD

  • Singing this song this year. Our director would never allow our sopranos to take over the song like that and we have a much more balanced choir. Can't wait to sing this at a concert.

  • In my choir, I'm a second soprano.... standing next to a first. It sucks on this song lol

  • @caitlinrose92 You know what sucks? Being both a Bass 2 and Bass 1 while standing next to a Tenor who is always under the pitch.

  • @TheRawr80 why, yes. that also sucks.

  • OVOS OMNES QUI TRANSITI PERVIAS OVOS OMNES OVOS OMNES!

  • man i cant wait to perform this song! I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH!

  • opening mens notes are NOT supposed to be forte, there is supposed to be a gradual increase in volume as you add parts. Dynamics are important all the way through although admittedly they did improve over time. MUCH too fast during those middle parts, they are supposed to be long and slow to give the song a Majestic feeling that this choir seems to be lacking. though one thing that MUST be praised about this choir is their use of vowels, though I still wouldn't consider them "Excellent".

  • Everytime the sopranos hit the high note I get chills throughout my body.. Great job!

  • The sopranos did over-balance the sound quality. However, the altos were a bit shy. The men, of course, have a rich and filling sound; pleasent to the ears. Good job overall. A possible "excellent" at MPAs. Keep strong, open vowels and lengthy texture with tone.

  • 'Comon altos! lets go!! Support ur part!!

  • The conductor charged through the si esto part when that should have been slowed down to largo. It should have been ridiculously slow for emotion and variety to the song

  • I heard a high school from Goshen Indiana last year sing this better. Still a great song. I agree though..Too top heavy. still solid though

  • That's odd, because this particular piece depends on altos, is carried by the basses/baritones. The sopranos and tenors create variety and texture.

Rather here, it's not that the sopranos were too heavy. They were wonderful. But the altos here were pathetic. They should be as strong as the sops, no stronger. It is true that the sops should be somewhat overpowered by the altoes.

  • wayy too soprano heavy. but i love this song. we sang it in my choir last year at festival.

  • My choir's singing this for competition this year, and I sing Soprano I. I absolutely despise our part in this song. We just wail. For the entire thing. We wail. ._.

  • @TrebleFuze My chorus is singing this piece. I'm an Alto II, so I love my part, but I really like the soprano part too, it sounds great! *attempted to sing* *failed, it was way too epic for a lowly alto*

  • the song is really good.

but i dont hear any altos in there at all

    the soprano is too loud!

  • geez altos. where are you??

  • AHHH too much soprano!!!!!

  • I'm a tenor, but I give respect where it's due. Sopranos are pretty boss.

  • @Mazeltofcocktail The tenor in this is booring... But we her a high g in the "Do Lore" Part.

  • Adwinela, your comment should read

Dear Sopranos: you ruin almost every song yours truly, a baritone. Baritones know where it is at.

  • my high school chorus is defintely singing this...i must say, i'm a soprano and i usually hate sopranos, but i like our part in this song ;) well done guys

  • Dear Sopranos, You ruin the song.

    Yours truly, a Baritone.

  • ok, for everyone blaming tone quality of the singers you cannot get an accurate depiction of what it sounds like due to the lack of "professional" recording. Unless you were there then none of your statements are valid.

  • I sang this song for county choir one year and it is still one of my favorites of all time. this is decently done

  • I remember singing this song in my high school choir. I still hum it to this day (: It's absolutely beautiful.

  • yall sucked

  • I love this song, but.... this recording is not very great to be honest. I know it's a hard song, but the Sopranos were really off, and such....

  • i think the men should have a darker sound. i love this song but i dont like the way this one was conducted...

  • I did this for a music festival (Fox Valley, if you've heard of it), we had 2 four hour rehearsals to learn this and three other songs, plus like 30 minutes total from class time the week before. and this song was one of my favorites, along with Consecrate the place and day. but this song is really hard and we had the same problem with the sopranos.

  • It's very refreshing to hear one of my most favorite pieces done in excellence!

  • We sung this song at the (Grammy award winning) Las Vegas Academy of Visual & Performing Arts. We we're all choir majors It was EASY! These people suck because the piano player sucks on top of other things.

  • Horrible, dynamics missing, it starts of soft and then its gets louder and louder up to forte, sopranos are out of tune, deir shouldnt be no vibrato either. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!!

  • HORRIBLE.... balance is awful cant hear the tenors and altos at the chours... sops back off ur killing my ears... and where is the dynamics????

  • @Haladirhollaback where *are* the dynamics

  • omg. i loved this piece. my choir did this last year but we couldn't perform this for the choir festival because too many of the members weren't taking it seriously. as much as i loved this piece and my part (alto). it was so hard! every time we sang until the end, i feel like i've been through a workout. :]

  • Longmont High School is singing this in March with the orchestra! It sounds amazing so far

  • yeah too much soprano, not enough alto or tenor. we only have 2 of our sopranos doing the really high part and it sounds reallly good. and some of the altos are doing the tenor part. it sounds really nice. im excited for the concert and UIL

  • False. If you did this piece, it was not easy. If the piece you did was easy, it wasn't this. If you're doing this piece and you think it's easy, you're doing it wrong, or at least ineffectively.

  • Agreed. This song is hard. We're singing this right now. We have a pretty awesome choir and this song is definitely not easy at all. It is starting to come together and it's an incredible song.

  • Actually it was easy kuz we've done it before. I know what I'm talking about when I say its easy. All it takes is a lot of focus, dedication, and hard work, and we did it ight.

  • When I was in choir about 6 years ago we sung this song at nationals and won first place! This song is no joke, very hard to sing! especially being a soprano.

  • dude, im playing this on the piano 4 the singing group at my school...it is so dang hard but this song is absolutely amazing

  • this song is KICK ASS!

  • Sang it last year with the GUHSD Honor Choir. I sing bass. SUPER BADASS. :)

  • My choir and I are doing this piece on Sunday... Glad we dont have to worry about overpowering the rest of the choir with our first soprano part- seeing as there's only 4 of us who can hit that high note. A lot of you are mentioning that the first soprano part in this song is distracting.... but (youre probably going to laugh at me) whats even more distracting to me is the also who has the shorter black dress. Its like..... "black dress, black dress, black pants, black pants, ohhh legs!" o.O

  • way too much Soprano.. we are doing this song at my school right now and I am a Soprano 1, so I understand its hard to back off, but this is way too much power... give the other parts in the choir a chance...

  • sopranos where was the love in the si est dolor you are too heavy in this song and you guys didnt contour or anything

  • what's with all the talking at the beginning?

i agree with ladyofdragons08 that the sopranos are indeed overwhelming. the tenors, basses and altos all have a very wonderful part but you can't even hear it over the sopranos.

  • We're doing this for all state. This is good, but I think the sopranos were too much. At the "Se est dolor, " I always get chills from the moving parts, and I could barely hear them. But it was all around pretty good.

  • we sang this in my choir we were way better i think we toured with this song

  • too much talking at the beginning....so i clicked off

  • Ouch, sopranos are overwhelming. Not good in my opinion. You need a good strong foundation...more tenor, bass, and alto PLEASE! Sopranos are a dime a dozen (except for the good ones), give me some good strong, deep altos any day.

"O vos omnes" in the beginning is a little slow...

  • well than obviously you dont know what r talking about this souds great i want to see u pull off any better

  • It may be due to the camcorder microphone.

  • This reminds me of Fate Unknown from KHII. I wasn't apart of our Chamber Choir so I didn't get to sing this :(

  • I just sang this for competition!!

I felt like if there were gonna kill a bull!!

  • this is cool. sang this song when I was in choir. i was a tenor, and this was a personal favorite of mine. this and loch lomond, both great songs by stroope. tenor part on this is sweet

  • We're singing this song in choir right now--I love it sooooo much!!! I'm a first soprano...those gs on the "recodare recodare recodare" part at the end are a killer!

  • i did this in school go crystal river!!

  • this is incredible

  • I hated this song with a passion, but now we finally learned it all, and made it faster and i love it :) great song, really dark and pretty

  • i personally think a lot of choirs do this too fast

  • man... i cant believe that i found this song... i did this twice in high school i was a tenor and a base..... this song is simply amaizing... tenors is the icing to this song cause they bring out the si es dolor. yea thats right

  • This was one of my favorite pieces to ever perform. I stopped singing once I got to college and i'm really missing it. =(

This is very well sung. Keep in mind that this is a video, it's going to pick up the sopranos more easily than the lower pitches. Judging from this choir's talent, i'd assume they were probably very well balanced. Thank you for posting this; it's been so long since i've heard it. =)

  • A little more dynamic contrast and balance and this would be fantastic!

  • yall sound excellent. When we sung the song, we only had 3 S1 and they almost over powered everyone else, cuz the higher notes resonate more than the lower notes.

  • our school is gonna rock wit me as the lead bass!!!

  • o vos omnes!!!

    videte videte videte videte!!! :)

they sang this for All State one year, and it was beautiful...all the parts were balanced, too...very rare

  • Our school is doing this song. I am not sure whether most schools have mostly altos, but ours does. Thats why I think we won't run into the overpowering soprano problem. But maybe I'm wrong. Am I? I'd like to know.

  • The sopranos usually overpower EVERYONE in this song. So what my director (Sheldon HS) did was have like 5 of us sing S1 and the rest of us sing either A1 or S2. And at the very end we went from pianissimo gradually to forte, so the altos could be heard. If you have altos sing their parts by themselves they would sound GREAT. Like really beautiful chords with tenors. And if you had the altos hold their note alone around 5:04, it PIMPIN!!! lol. just sayin

  • thats a good idea. My choir was huge, like 90 people, and we had the same amount of guys as girls about, so the overpowering thing didnt occur so much. still, good idea

  • Altos seem to commonly have a problem with competing with sopranos. They can be overpowering but we did this in Concert Choir for Big 8 and it's either a matter of the Sopranos being too loud, or the Altos being too soft. But I can't even hear them. At all. Something must be done.

  • ok so here what happens it takes more breath support and energy to sing high and the altos are in this song and alot of songs in the low to middle range while the sops are high so they sound louder its just sound wave stuff!

  • I can see that. I am a low alto, and I know that we tend to use our chest voice which can be a bit quieter. So, yeah. I get that.

  • The classic battle: Soprano vs. everyone else....

  • @swallace16 always!

  • @swallace16 I know. THEY TAKE UP LIKE THE WHOLE SONG AND THEN US ALTOS NEVER GET HEARD!

  • the instructor took the song a lil faster then i would, i sang this piece in choir few years back...great song, fun to sing

  • WHERE ARE MY ALTOS! I CAN BARELY HEAR THEM! *cries in corner*

  • hahahahah too funny!! yea they are sort of eaten!

  • To the 'sopranos' that said you can't sing a high note well if you're quiet, you obviously haven't studied the correct things. It is quite possible to do a pianissimo A. All it takes is focus in the mask and a ton of breath support. Go watch any famous soprano because I promise you that they can hit a pianissimo high note, beautifully and WELL.

And they suffered from not doing straight tone, which is what the style calls for, making it much more haunting.

  • we're doing this song for chior... the teacher made all the sopranos switch to alto(so we dont break ear drums) and we only have like...5 people doing those top notes.. maybe 2 idk. im a first soprano... and singing alto.. lets say its difficult not to sing those notes... the sopranos in this were a little too heavy... i think the people farther down in this are right.. less would work.

  • Fantastic. we're singing this in my choir as well and i really love this piece. The sopranos could back off a little bit on that high A and we need some more guys. And the sopranos are kind of overpowering on the si est dolor part. But overall, this piece is beautiful!

  • We're singing this in my concert choir class. It's awesome.

  • Goodness...I love this song...

Wonderful job. I sang it last year in my four county honors chorus, and I loved every moment of it. <3

  • OMG STOP TALKING!!!!

  • And be still while you're at it! DX

  • im sorry but he was talking for what seemed like for ever

  • unless you're a soprano, you might not know just how impossible it is to sing a note that high and not overpower others. you can't sing an extremely high note well if you're quiet. But, like the post before says, it might be a good idea to have less sopranos on that note just for less volume.

  • I'm right there with ya Redr101. I'm a soprano 2, sometimes 1 in my choir and I have to sing that high note in our chorus. It is nearly impossible to sing a note that high softly because of all the air you have to use to hit it.

  • I did this song at Florida All-state choir and it sounded sooo much betta. we only had two sopranos on the high A and the guys were more quiet in the beggining and i would like to c them b much deeper in da beggining.

  • I sang this song with the Wyoming All-State Choir... it is a really beautiful song. The best part is that we had Z. Randall Stroope directing it himself. I think we sang it better though. I think that the sopranos just didn't compensate enough for the pitch enough.

  • Oh my god! I love stroopes music!!! We sang a song of his last year in choir and it was AMAZING!! Talk about true intense music.

  • the sopranos are over powering the se est dolar part the should hold back just a little

  • i totally agree. im a soprano I and believe me if a soprano is well-trained then she can definitely control her volume. they should back off.

  • that is a loud piano(dynamic level) at the beginning. It is supposed to be p, then, mp, then mf, then f, then ff.

  • it is originated from slovakia

  • nice =]

  • the language is latin. and this choir has done an excellent job with this piece. btw, the composer is Z. Randall Stroope who can write his ass off!

  • What language is this?
