One Fletcher Henderson fan prefers his bands earlier version on jazz performance basis. He doesn't consider that 1)this is a Fletcher arrangement 2) much better swing (versus jazz) tempo for lindy hopping 30 Better ensembel playing and
40 Bunny and Benny's solos compare with anything on the Fletcher recording.
Fletcher Henderson Did An Awesome Job Of Arranging This. I'm A 16 Year Old Kid From Los Angeles & I've Always Loved This Style Of Music Just Never Really New The Artist Names Or Song Titles. But Now I'm In A Jazz & Rock N Roll History Class & I'm In Love With The Music, Artist & This Whole Era! This Is True Art!
Fletcher Henderson was a great composer and bandleader, but was also a terrible businessman. Every time he formed a band, it would "fall apart" within a period of time, due to finanical difficulties, This is why he created arrangements for Goodman for over a decade.
I have never met one single person who didn't like vintage jazz / swing. It could be something they never really listened to because all they listen to is gangster rap, but they don't hate it !
Immortal, please don't worry about nothin. Ignorance abounds everywhere. all people find their true destiny. Music like this is without equal. Everyone knows that.
@wafflecushioned And what does Goodman's ethnic and religious background (which was never a secret) have to do with his artistic contributions (other than perhaps the influence of klezmer music on his style of playing)?
@wafflecushioned Still irrelevant. A lot of us have issues with our upbringings - ask any Catholic school survivor. I was raised a "Crystal Methodist" and had a brief bad experience with Mormonism - and my wife is a former right-wing evangelical. We've both divorced ourselves from those backgrounds, but they have nothing to do with our current contributions to society.
I still fail to see how Goodman's Jewish heritage has anything to do with his music beyond what he grew up listening to.
@wafflecushioned : Let's just say that when it comes to spiritual matters, we have many questions and few answers - and we reject any and all forms of organized religion as well as self-appointed "authorities" (priests, popes, vicars, pastors, rabbis, imams - whatever).
Organized religion has historically been nothing more than a tool used by a self-serving aristocracy to control the masses.
@mizmiki65: Glad to hear that. Henderson wasn't the greatest businessman however and did get ripped off a few times. Seems like the Glenn Miller recording of this tune is pretty similar...where'd you learn this?
@BardCoennius I hear this while watching the Ken Burns series 'Jazz' and was impressed to hear that someone had actually paid to use someone else's arrangements: like you, I had understood that most African American bandleaders and writers were usually 'ripped off'. They do mention that Florence Henderson was in financial dire straights due to the depression, the likely reason he sold his 'book' of arrangements.
Would like to know how many BG band arrangements were old Fletcher Henderson ones he'd written for his own band and how many were new ones he did while working for Benny. All great and distinctive!!
I always love the Gene Krupa's beat!

This music certainly is one of the reasons why they call this generation "The Great Generation". What happened to America ?
How did we get to such a low level of acceptance of what we call music today ? Sad .

@Santosificationable Lady Gaga is actually trained in rag-time piano. Every so often during a live show she'll throw in "Maple Leaf Rag".

BardCoennius 1 year ago
@BardCoennius Mr. Goodman was ashamed of being Jewish till the day he died. He was a great musician, but he and Judaism didn't agree with each other.

@BardCoennius Benny Goodman bought and paid for Fletcher Henderson's 'book' of arragements; they did not 'wind up' in Benny Goodman's book
