I get chills listening to chopin. Overwhelmed with joy for Mozart. When I hear Horowitz play Scarlatti it something beyond words, something that probably takes place in heaven now.
What is so amazing is that he made his reputation with the bombastic repetoire (and there was a part of him that loved it) but he truly excelled in the smaller gems.
The first Scarlatti is played with such geniality and equanimity. That gentle tone has a life of its own. The second Scarlatti is endowed with edifying vigor. The Scriabin is truly one of the most emotionally tumultuous performances I have heard in months. There will never be another Horowitz.
Don't get me wrong. This guy is a MASTER. And I love his playing. I'm sure someone will say "Who care" or the less pleasant equivalent. However I did want to mention his ridiculously curled pinkie finger. My teacher would have had a fit!!!!
A point I noted after his completing the etude, he searches for the handkerchief, can't find it ,stands , does not know where he is walking off to , lets out a blow...Even HE hardly believes what he achieved here. It just happened. This is unequalled playing. And how beautiful was that Scarlatti? Just incredible.
Thank you very much for that comment, the last part of the last sentence especially. So many people forget this so often.
They say he was primarily technician but I am quite sure he was first and foremost a musician. And he was great precisely because he was a great technician but only after being a great musician first.
The beauty of the second of the Scarlatti emanates from the impeccable "swing" of the beat and the perfect articulation and the steady inexorable motion combined with supreme lightness and delicacy of touch, unsurpassed in any other performance. Every time I hear this performance I am thrilled and amazed.
Bravo! beautiful execution of Scarlattis' esquisses

Horowitz is the bomb - my God his technique and style are just classic and pure. The music comes out so pure and simple - the tune is true to itself.

Is there more of this concert to see, I even did not know that this concert was filmed also, so not just recorded.
It was a sensational concert of exceptional quality.

If I was an alien cruisin around in my UFO back in 1968, I would have abducted this guy and made him play Scriabin.
