  • This video is a favorite on Myanmar

  • Good looking jet.

  • very nice video wow its perfect for a parking place

  • its got a reverse gear!

  • Comment removed

  • It's awesome how it landed in such a short distance, turned around and took off UNASSISTED like that!

  • @trollman1111 In Sweeden.

  • very nice

  • My dad flew the JA-37 Viggen!!^^

  • BEAST!!! I've never seen a plain do that reverse 180 turn awesome.

  • @NIGHT454 Beast?

  • are there no flaps on the main wing or does the front canard do all the work? if there are flaps then he didn't use them, which would lead you to believe that the take off and landing could be even shorter.

  • A viggen actually landed on a road by misstake in the 80's the pilot turned around in an intersection and took off again. To the shock of a female car driver waiting at the intersection.

There where articles in the swedish papers about it.

The road actually weas a runway for wartime use if the air base's regular runway was bombed, the pilot misstock it for the regular runway at night.

Pretty guttsy to take off again though.

  • if i may say so this is touch and go Viggen style.

  • landing, turning around and up again in one minute, pretty damn impressive.

  • Greetings. I am owner of this video which is now over 10 years old. Surprised to stumble upon it after that many years, shows how time flies :-(

Video is shot at Waddington Airshow in UK in 2000.

This was my first airshow as well as the first and last time I saw Viggen.

This was an awesome experience, especially on the short take-off when airplane banked right and the tail pipe was pointing towards crowd. It cut right through me. And the noise, uh oh!

  • "RAGGE! JAG HAR SKAFFAT EN VIGGEN!"

  • WTF? It was like he had that thing in reverse

  • @BRIANROX1 yeah it has reverse thrusters

  • @mongorians22 , Nothing reverse, only a blocked nosle that forces the air to go throug the holes.

  • 0:05 , it sounds just like a TIE fighter

  • This Plane is 43 years old look at this.....wow

  • the "s" in STOL is for slam the mains down as hard as you can haha

  • There he backed up and turned his aircraft. The start-up it was a woman on the way out on the road while duck plane roared past. During the start blowing a few street signs off of the jet, and some window panes cracked. After investigation into the incident was never about what the pilot was ....

  • It is said that during an exercise in settling on a Swedish road base, it took a Viggen pilot error which route he would land on and landed on a road that was closed. but open to traffic. After discovering his mistake as he taxied to the nearest intersection.

  • @mikaeel2 This happened in Byholma?

    I remember stories about it.

    Great plane!

  • @swec89 No, this is not Byholma. I did military service at F10 around -95 at F10 and i´ve been at large exercise in Byholma. In the background you see buildings and stuff, and Byholma was a "war-base" (bas-90) deep in the woods. At the landing strip there were only some domes for housing 1 plane, not a lot of buildings. I so miss the happy childhood with an active F-10 (military base now shut down) and the roaring fighters. I also live just a couple of kilometers from F-10.

  • @lazlo09 I don't talk about The clip but "It is said that during an exercise in settling on a Swedish road base" in the comments.

  • @swec89 Ok, i missunderstood then, apologize for that!

  • The irony however is that Swedish would never dare to use it, even to defend their country.

  • @Lachausis

What do you mean concidering the Swedish participation in ISAF?

  • @Lachausis

What the Viggen? Well of course not, it's been decommissioned.

  • World most powerful-one-engine

  • @yamahaevo The Saab with the Volvo RM8 which is basically a Pratt and Whitney JT8D with a afterburner like the engine in a 727 or DC9 puts out a great 28,110lbf but the latest GE F110 the GE-129 and GE-132 that power the F-16 put out 29,400 and 32,500lbf. And the new GE/RR F136 for the new F35 puts out 40,000

  • what a mean looking ugly monster of a plane. Thats some good perfomance though, good lord.

  • PIT STOP!!! 54 sec!!! VERY NICE!!!

  • Ohhhh I love how he not only did a short landing but he backed it up faster than a car could!!!!!

  • Pilot: "OH SHIT forgot my wallet" Lands....

"Ahh how did it get under the seat ...... peace bitches"

  • @trollman1111 Agreement or not. There are many stories about those flights. One is that the Blackbird crew actually sent a congratulation card or a fax to the Swedes for a job well done. The Swedes knew about 1½ hour before when the Blackbird would be coming and they almost flew the same route. The Viggen would then meet them head on. There is a lot about those encounters in the book "beyond the secret missions" by Paul Crickmore. Cool stuff. Greetings from Copenhagen.

  • A Viggen was said to have done Mach 3 with a radar lock on a SR-71. I dont blame it. The Viggen is a missile. And it has reverse thrust which a lot of modern aircraft dont have nowadays.

  • @G777GUN Mach 3!? The Viggen?? I don´t think so. It is not built by materials that can stand such heat. But it is true however, that the Viggens several times had locked on SR--71 on patrouls -- but it was a kind of agreement they had with the Blackbird crew who slowed their aircraft so The VIggen could practise missile lock. Only the Viggen and The Tornado has reverse thrust.

  • Fantastic

  • wow, that´s a really powerful engine!

  • The Swedes sure know how to build it tough. That landing! It's like a carrier trap without the arrester wires. Viggen was one of the best cold-war fighters ever built. It didn't need a huger support infrastructure, was easy to maintain, and it was relatively cheap.

  • So coool

  • Heavy, but expertly flat on the landing mate.................... Anywhere I can buy some new brake pads around here ????????????? LOL. Nice. Well done Pilot !!

  • this guy can reverse his plane better than i can do with my car :)

  • Comment removed

  • Goose bumps! Stunning beauty!

  • Supersonic STOL aircraft. That does not happen very often.

  • it has thrust reverse, nice...

  • @Eisenberg99 There is no other fighter in the world that has BOTH a thrust reverser and an afterburner.

  • @flamesholder

explain to me then how it is going backwards if not through reverse thrust

  • @Eisenberg99

A closing valve at the end forces the air to puch forward, trough the hols in the side at the jet Exhaust.. work as a break and some % of the air is moving forward so you can drive it backways... :)

  • very impressive !

I can see why we're interested in this Jet fighter!!! In Switzerland we also use roads...

  • Viggen was designed to carry heavy loads of clusters and like the opened files no longers closed, both Hiroshima-classed nukes, but also over 80 times stronger. If Sweden needs nukes in the future, a single 39jas can carry the payload whats equal to10 nagasakis, hot fueled plutos........ How many months before Sweden nukes thegriffins... I hope its under 200 days....

  • @kulmedfarbrorful Viggen could link up and share radar signals with another Viggen via ground based transmitters. That made it possible for one attacking plane to turn off weapons radar etc, that could give away position, and attack straight on without detection, The plane itself had a very low frontal radar profile. The other VIggen with radar on could concentrate just on staying at safe distance. With 900 of these planes in the end of the 60ies, it was a factor to consider in the Baltic Sea.

  • alot more manly then the chicken shit Gripen

  • @riverman83 It may look that way, but the Gripen would litterarily run circles around the bulky, conventionally controlled Viggen - and it can carry a heavier payload on top of that.

  • @riverman83 > But Viggen cant compare with Gripen in any thing.. That was why it where built.. Not just because The defence need something new or replace the Viggen.. It´s made for higher speed, shorter start/landing, better and more inkl andvanced weaponds, more flexible, funktional and dynamic.. Then the Gripen is smaller doesn´t matter at all, harder to se and follow.. Much much more practical.. But Viggen is still an amazing plane that would still be usefull if upgrade to be more modern.

  • glömde han köpa mjölk eller???

  • It is cool to be able to land on a ship without bungheeeeees... but the US think backworries, but thinking back can be good....... (ifyou <re good).....

  • Viggen takes anything in speed :)

  • Love those Cold War era big engined jets!! :)

  • How does it go backwards? Reverse Thrusters?

  • Wow, that was impressive! Never have seen a jet do a display like that before. The profile of the aircraft is like none other. Like some supersonic flying T-Rex or something!

  • Wow! Very good!

    Damned Hapan technics...

    XD XD XD

  • @nihilistika What hovercraft plane?

  • @TheGoldenSphinx It´s called: Viggen ( Swedish air force ) We have JAS now so Viggen is no more on duty.

  • @torvherk Vad var det du svarde på?

  • @torvherk 100 gripen is so ricolous small

  • @95predator But 100 fighters is more than most airforces have, and the Gripen has three versions built in one aircraft...that gives the SwAF about 300 aircrafts of strength...and don´t forget that it´s one of the most advanced aircrafts in the world. So the swedish airforce is one of the best airforces today.

  • @mittshiett Yes, and bearing in mind its communication and awareness systems are integrated with the Erieye AEW system it proved a very agile force to recon with in the Red Flag excercise in -08

  • Comment removed

  • @911205KW Ehh no? according to the swedish airforce there is 54 (A), 12 (B), 56 (C) and 12 (D) a total of 134 Gripens. And a DC version doesnt exist, if you´re thinking of the newest its called NG version and is only a test/demonstrator for SAAB.

  • Comment removed

  • @911205KW No sweden have 134 Gripens, i´ve looked it up on the swedish airforce homepage. 7 Squadrons is in active duty. Trust me I live in sweden and will begin my military career now in january. There is not any order on the NG version yet, but probably there will be in the future. India and Brazil are interrested in it, as of Sweden. But the NG version will replace the older models, not increasing the quantity of aircrafts. The plans is to maintan 100 Gripens in the future within the SwAF.

  • how did it reverse?

  • @cardude1992 The end thruster tube gets plugged and air shoots back out of thos slits on the back. You should google 747 reverse thrusters

  • It was designed for the Swedish system of using roads as emergency air strips for landing and take off..

  • No, the road system was a main part of the Swedish defense. Not as "emergency" landing strips but as being used as main air bases. Sweden had over 100 road bases when it was completed (BAS 90). That meant it was basically 2-3 fighters per air strip. The idea was to have a dispersed system where the enemy could´nt defeat the air force while bombing them when they were on the ground....

  • Yes, well, by emergency strips I meant that they would be used in a warlike scenario, or in actual combat.. exactly as you yourself explained. And to me a war or warlike situation is very much an emergency.. that's what I was told when I was in the Swedish Air Force / Flygvapnet anyway.. :) Mind you, that was many years ago.. :0) Last time I saw the equipment I used back then, it was at the F10 Museum.. as part of the collection.. sigh..

  • @nudeheaven It is likely to have worked, however they were so obvious that every summer russian "tourists" went around mapping them!

  • @salesman990 they were not meant to be all top secret, just do damn many, to dispersed with to few aircraft to be worth the effort of bombing them in any meaningful way.

  • @salesman990

Nevertheless, it would occupied 400 soviet front-line attack-aircrafts and the fighters they would had needed 24/7. First of all, they did´nt have that capacity, 2nd of all. If they did, that would have meant they did not have fighters to attack any of our other facilities, such as the coastal artillery etc. It´s all a matter of priority. And Sweden built such a system that forced the enemy to sacrifice many priorities...

  • @nudeheaven I think that what BasicModelling meant was that the airstrips were to be used in an emergency of war. That's how I've understood it to be, anyway! Not for emergency landings. Sadly the Swedish Air Force these days is more of an Air Farce.

  • That is excellent STOL.. Short Take Off & Landing.. it's not a VTOL, but definetely STOL.. :)

  • how many planes have reverse gear?

  • As far as I know only the Tornado and the Viggen have thrust reverse.

  • But you never see a Tornado go backwards.. :) :) This is the classic Viggen party trick, a great shame the Swedish Air Force no longer fly them..

  • Many of those you see. Comercial jet have it, but they dont use it because of increase in fuel consumption and airplanes dont have rear mirrors...

  • WoW reverse nice plane go saab..

  • Explain STOL then,.. if thisisn't, than what is?? :)

  • thats gangsta right there, he stopped right quick, backed dat ass up, 180'd and DIPPED!

  • Pretty impressive and would come in very handly espcially if you want to make a quick stop to go to the bathroom.

  • LOL!

  • @22250rmntn Or maybe deliver fastfood (<---Hey, a pun ^_^) for groundtroops?

  • Thats pretty amazing

  • wow, impressive.

  • RETRO!!!!

  • nice reverse!

  • Thats one mean fighter!

  • Looked painful

  • This is outstanding! No other fighter can do this - except maybe the Panavia Tornado ...

  • You're right mortdk, no other fighter can do this. This fighter was well ahead when she entry the scene in 1967.

...And forget the tornado. The only they have common is the engine reverser.

  • Wow!

  • @jimmypojken > Hangarfartyg ligger ju kring 400+ meter..

*Shrug*

  • Nej, har inte hänt. Lumparhistoria. Teoretiskt möjligt, ja, men praktisk omöjlighet.

Speciellt motorljudet.

Mer "bang for the buck".

  • ..i Sverige.

  • R.I.P!

  • Wow, check the liftoff from 0:53 onwards... no problem here, we just land this fighter jet somewhere, turn around and lift off in 7 seconds. :)

    Imponerande video grabbar.

We have free asylum for you and all your relatives. Isnt it anything more we can do for you Massa?....

  • Damn!!!.....For some reason my Viggen cant get off the ground? ; )

  • agreed

  • genial tiene reversa

  • go sweden go

  • Does it have a reverse power to stop so quickly ??

  • Yepp

  • Wow that is one HARD landing....that must be a tough plane

  • not the plane, the pilot had some snaps-in-flight :P

  • Dont wanna brag or something.. But Ive actually been sitting in a J37 Viggen in November last year.. Im just feeling so proud.. And just for the record.. the plane is HUGE!!!

  • Bello, bello, bello!

  • I love this aircraft

  • impressive.....nice :)

  • shit... he stopped so fast there must be snot on the canopy...

  • My God what happened to the microphone

  • and wtf, viggen was a good plane, it doesn´t matter what americans have to say, this was one hell of a plane.

  • the me262 never made it to the autobahn...

  • THAT WAS COOL!

  • no. that was stol.. lol..

  • ha good one

  • I was born in Gävle, i watched those birds play when Uppsala vs. Söderhamn was on (F-14 and F-15 i believe) The sound of a viggen is good, but 5 or more of them... get it?... :D
