Glenn gould is special he is beyond comparison in Bach. No one can actually surpass Gould or, only reach at a decent distance(Richter, Gulda, Lipatti...)
Aww no..toooo mechanical, not doing bach justice,.try Andras schiff's version alot slower and full of character and colour + he explores way more possibilities within the piece without ruining it!
I love this Variation and Gloud's performance is so beautiful, perfect and musical and sentimental at the same time!!! I listen to it over and over and over again and I never get enough of it!!! It's stunning!!!!
hoho! left 'n right hands ware out of sync at 0.33! tiny 'mistake' lol :P It can be possible he does it because he wanted the D to be more heavy sounding. but I think it just went wrong. you can notice it by looking at his eyebrow reacting on it.
(Excerpt from a poem I wrote): "Ode To Glenn Gould" ~ His hands! I must speak of his hands~ The long, slender well-manicured fingers~ Each sparking a 'supply of energy all its own'~ They were capable of so much magic~ More than any magician's have ever wrought! Ah yes, they were so important to him~ And to the world of music, and now~ Down through invisible halls of time, to me! When they play, the world seems to stop~ And I am being visited by the angels~ For that while. ~
@purple yes--I was given the 1955 recording for my birthday (when I was a kid)and have both now like I said below people compare them and I think that is silly--something went out of my life when he died--you picked avery beatiful one. I want to upload something from BK1 well tempered but don't know how
Gould always sang when he played. You can listen to his voice in almost all his recordings. In Bach's Concerto Italiano, his so excited singing and playing.
He lays it down bare, bluntly even, He doesn't hide behind reverb. He takes Bach and shows it to us "Here it is". Perfect timing....PERFECT CONTROL....ITS UN BELIEVABLE.....The Russians were right he was an alien. There is a reason, why he and Bach were chosen to represent earth (among others) on the Gold record on Voyager. He and Bach are traveling the universe, forever.
@Ianthe22 know what you mean. I can play it too. and also as fast as he does. but Gould is not only accurate - he plays very dynamic. total control. i think it will take more than just a few days hehe to play it like he does. and besides that; it's about making music not playing sheetmusic correctly. gould has a very rare way of playing - I think it's beatiful :D
@darmbon Yes, it is a beautiful fragment. it's my favourite one of the Goldberg variations. It is ages ago i played these pieces. I remember playing it from the score the first time it took me a couple of hours or so. At least i played it as i thought it was what the scores represented. Later i tried it in the "Gould way". The trick is how you place your index fingers and stretching of the fingers. But the adjustments from the traditional to Glenn style took minutes maybe an hour for muscelMEM.
@zours It depends, some pieces are more difficult then others. Some are not that hard to play but its hard to play them well. I started playing piano when you wrote that comment and I have just learned the first half of Variation 25 of the GB Variations and it took me 3 month to learn that. But some pieces of that collection are really really hard and I would imagine that you would need at least a decade of experience to be able to execute such a piece in a decent way.
@zours Don't listen to anyone. You can play like this. Just be determined to, watch and copy the master. Be very patient though. Be ready to undertake the learning journey and humbly accept your mistakes along the way and learn from them.

I have just recently learned/been able to memorize this piece. It's a sheer pleasure to play. Beatiful and demanding at the same time
Trying to play THIS fast though, I could only ever manage the first eight bars without error... Kudos to anyone who does :P

I would probably kill for fingers like those. Seriously. The joy from playing like him would definitely overcome the sadness of killing someone.

It means opus nr. "988" 5th variation which can be played with a 1-keyboard harpsichord or with a 2-keyboard harpsichord.
