F 117 was shot down in Yugoslavia, near village of Budjanovci by Yugoslav SAM battery back in 1999 during NATO bombing of Yugoslavia ( Serbia and Montenegro)!!!!

@edwardoalvarez22 MiG-31s are practically next to useless in these days. It's primarily used for interception of enemy bombers, not dogfighting. Though it's an updated version of the MiG-25, it's manouvrability isn't very good either, compared to the F-15/16/18/22/35 or MiG-29 or Su-30s.

Are you so sure of what you're saying? MiG-31s.. USELESS? The MiG-31 doesn't need to dogfight necessarilly. It could zip in, fire off some missiles (Possibly the AA-12 Adder or R-33?) and zip off. And if all the targets haven't been bagged, then a second wave of MiG-29s or Su-35s can mop 'em up. IF there are any left. Besides, MiG-31BMs or BSs can use their radar to track targets like the F-35s, F-117s, B2s, etc. If a friggin SAM can nail 'em so can a Foxhound.

Waves of MiGs? There haven't been "waves" of MiGs since the Vietnam war...and we all saw how useful they've been against Western fighters in the past 30 years. Anyone who believes that an air superiority aircraft doesn't "need" to fight need only look at history to see how wrong they are. THAT theory was proven false in the 1960s. Stealth or not, you better be able to ACM.

@macgriffyn The proper term is REGIMENTs of MiGs. Russia, Ukraine & Belorussia still have those. Bomber regiments too. There is no real equivalent of Human Wave tactics in the air anymore, but there used to be.

The real deal is a multidimensional IADS system.

The term 'waves" refers to a large number of something...in this case, MiG fighters. In this PARTICULAR case, I was responding to another post where the term was used by someone else.

Mig 31 have extraordinary radar PESA sistem, integrated with IRST. 4 MIG 31 can cover 800km wide range, proventing any tipe of fighters to enter, including STEALTHY planes too.

So say a F/A-22A comes along using it Advance Background Radiation Filter it blends into the local radar signals. Tracking(But not locking onto) The Mig-31 Knowing its speed and course. Avoiding Wondering into the Mig 31's Detection range. Sliding on its 6 and using super cruise to finish her off with guns. Never showing up on any sensors. Like the plane just fell out of the sky.

@1123359 the f15 has never shot down the su 27 yet and none of western jet fighters has did it....in 1991 two f15 was downed by the iraki DCA, and a mig 25 PDS has shot down an f18 the pilote was never found.In another incident, a MiG-25 Foxbat E, after avoiding eight American F-15 fired three missiles at an EF-111 electronic jamming, which forced him to abandon his mission and, following the absence of interference caused the loss of an F-15 due to a surface to air missile.

And even you can detect palnes 1 000 000 000 km away, AIM120D is a US longest range Air to Air misile and have 120-130 km range, and Mig 31 and SU27-35 can all carry Vympel R37 air to ait misiles with operational range 400km. And there is a PAK FA and SU47, they are killers of any western fighters. Go to wikipedia you IDIOT, or find some other sourses about MIG31.

Well some months ago, I was discussing the future of dogfighting with a seasoned fighter pilot. He convinced me that dogfighting will never go out of style. There are missiles, and there are countermeasures, and then there are better missiles and better countermeasures. :) When AAM's fail, which they may, a pilot may have to close range and bring his/her guns to bear. There are no countermeasures against guns. Dogfighting maneuvers are also important for missile or radar avoidance.

but i mean what is the purpose of fighters anymore? seriously take the su-47, arguably the most advanced air to air combat aircraft. when is it going to do what it was made for? as far as i can see never. look at all active fighters in the u.s armed forces deployed around the world, they are just doing air to land missions, never dogfighting. even if we were at war with a country capable of retailiating with other "fighters" it makes much more sense to send a missile up from the ground

Remember when that F-117A got shot down over Serbia? You have a point about the Su-47; however the argument between high technology systems and cheap, mass-deployed systems is old and good militaries use a mix of both. Both can be effective. MiG-17's and SA-2's were lethal in Vietnam; whereas AWACS-supported F-15's et al did the job in Desert Storm. Advanced fighter aircraft are versatile weapon platforms. A given plane can be used for interception, bombing, reconnaissance, ground-attack, etc.

its actually pretty useless, Mig 31 is a lot more capable. It can actually fly above mach 1 at low level, its a lot stronger and more fuel efficient, has better radar, avionics etc. Russia doesn't even operate all 400 mig 31, why should it need more. Russia needs more Flankers and Pak-FA out sooner.
