This bird is not healthy. A healthy bird does not breath through its mouth unless it is very hot out or in the ray of hot sun. This bird will die if not taken to a vet...you probably don't have money to spend on the vet bill though, so this bird will die.
I appreciate your concern. Actually the bird lived. It had been attacked by my dogs, and although it was in shock when I filmed this video, it recuperated and still lives near my house, nearly a year later. In fact, I found its nest this spring and it had a clutch of 3 eggs. I do take animals to the vet when needed, although my vet is not a wildlife vet. You can see the video where I took one of my chickens to him. She is still with me, too!
Thanks for the kind words. Wild animals are not meant to be caged. They are much better off free. And she did eventually recover and I have seen her in the trees a couple times, so I think this one has a happy ending. I am just honored that I had the chance to help her! Mourning doves are so often taken for granted, but they are magnificent creatures.
You probably will understand when I say this experience changed my life. I know that sounds dramatic, but the timing and yes, symbolism, was just too perfect. I am actually a lucky person even though my heart has broken. This encounter taught me that peace is always there if you are willing to find it (or let it find you...) Wow! I also had a different encounter (very long story) that taught me that nothing is ever taken without something else being given - you just need to see it. Whew! :-)

I am glad you released it back into the wild because most people will keep them.
