Apparently these concertos (and the Toccata and Fuge in D) were to have been included in the "Sound track of Earth" attached to the Voyager space probes (not these recordings admittedly), but Carl Sagan felt it best to leave it off as he felt it would just be "showing off" :)
And I am "forced" to agree... RIP Mr B! and thanks for leaving us with such wonderous gifts
i love bach as much as the next guy, but magicdolphingo is right, you really must not be paying attention if you think there is no good music today. sure, there is bubble gum pop, and factory-produced 'music', but there is some amazing stuff out there in virtually every genre. honestly, how can you not like the beatles, or bowie, or guns'n'roses, or the fugees, or beck, or antibalas, or dave brubeck, or dj shadow, or burning spear, or johnny cash, or mj, or gershwin, or james brown, etc.?
@jramp3 People aren't saying that there's no good music today, simply that one must do a lot of sifting to separate the wheat from the chaff. It never ceases to amaze me how genuinely talented musicians are overlooked in favour of those who possess a good novelty value or will sell the most records. The lamentation is more about the general state of music, where undeniably great music (eg. that of Barrios, Liszt, Tarrega, etc.) is often forgotten about while pop singers become millionaires.
As i often say to my students(I actually ALWAYS say it to my students) "Bach is not God, but if God were a composer, He would be Bach."
Verdi, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Wagner, at least, plus Gounod and a host of second raters, venerated Bach as the greatest of all Composers.(Haydn, God bless him, thought Mozart was the greatest. He didn't miss by much)
@PTCello Where's your proof that those composers veneterated Bach as the greatest of all composers? I'm not disagreeing with you (Bach is truly the best) but where's the proof? I've never encountered this.
but I meant with pop music, all kind of modern music. Modern music is horrible. I like it so much that there are people as you are, because there are not many people who like classical music.
if you think there is no good modern music, then you are simply to lazy to look, or have a very narrow taste, not that you have some superior sensibility to all other musicians.
@bachkirche Yes, the horn duet is one of the highlights of this concerto. When I was younger, I didn't appreciate this repetitive movement, and thought it was very weak. But all of the "episodes" between repetitions, not just the horn duet, are so very wonderful and they give a new perspective on the ritornello when it comes back around each time.
este minuet es un trio doble con una polonesa en el medio de los dos trios, seri aun minuet,trio1,minuet,polonesa,minuet,trio2,minuet, realmente increible, que grandiosidad este concierto y toda la obra de bach en general
The harpsichord sound is a little declined if i compare this with an former recording by the english chamber orchestra under the conductor of raymond Leppard. But may also be its due to the sound quality on YT.
I think it was Beethoven. Beethoven also said "how can this man [Bach] be dead?" to which his friend replied "He lives in his music" and Beethoven replied back "if only we had time to play it".

Excellent music by the maestro. I beleive this guy produced almost a composition every day of his working life as kappelmiester of Liepzig cathedral!

@k1ltro it does sound a bit "grainy" but i wouldn't say it sounds like crap. I like this piece enough to overlook a slight distortion in sound.

ProfChristiaan,
I would have said the same thing: "I like it so much that there are people as you are, because there are not many people who like classical music."
But, if we want to get specific, I prefer Baroque music over Classical, but I still enjoy them both. Anything not modern in simple words.

The horn duet is Bach at his absolute best. As Goethe said, Bach's music is like eternal harmony conversing with itself.
