Yeah, basic rule around equipment is don't put your booger hooks into areas that collapse, turn, or otherwise pinch and crush. Especially when banging them on the ground.
@DennyDucet I like the SOPMOD but I think it's way overpriced for what it offers. For about 50$ more I can step into the Magpul UBR which is probably the most versatile and robust combat gunstock ever made. And for about $25 less I can still use the Vltor E-mod stock which had very little differences from the SOPMOD.
@m1garand1943 I didn't take it that way at all, and I was probably laughing more than anyone else at myself, my own bad luck. Sometimes you just gotta lighten up. Takes the edge off.
@SERVIAM2008 That's good to know. I was highly considering that stock before I saw that video. I guess that's a substantial seal of approval considering you almost lost a finger in it, lol.
@PocketDrummer HAHA, ! Yeah I guess that does say alot. I don't believe there are any adjustable stocks out there that are failproof under abuse. Magpul makes a great piece of kit and they have a stock to fill the needs of any picky shooter from the basic MOE to the UBR or PRS. All of them are excellent. Check your inbox for more details.
Oops got your other link . Happy Birthday, I stand corrected I am also 43 ,nov 21,1969. I should have used earplugs when issued. I still think I am 25, then run a few miles, go on a trail hike and then I feel 90.
The fact that I am 42 and novice smartphone user. Acronyms are used to facilitate all the useless typing . Oh well don't get all butthurt . Attended marine boot camp dec 12 1987 , same year I graduated h. S. Tornillo Texas. While an artillery f.o. I attended jump school , Charlie co 507. When you were in probably in grade school . I was also in south And Latin America to be exact sir.
@tanhelmet That would be really stupid to use by choice. Maybe for emergencies, but NEVER by choice. 550 cord stretches, not something you want your sling to do. Not to mention how uncomfortable it would be for that cord to dig into your shoulder for a few hours....
The old xm177 shorty a1 upper used by sp in the airforce and few m.c. Security forces and embassies included a colt h-bar delta with riser. Super cool. Stick weld and eye relief was perfect . Clearing a fte , ftf , stovetop , cookoff (mortaring) was gtg. No insult to you , more to real beginners . I attended the combat armorers course in 29 palms with m.c., ntc with az nat grd , and gunsite with orange co. CA. Now that I retired from mil service , I give a combat course x 2 in pecos texas. @tanhelmet Someone else I think was spot on by saying its hard to believe you're 40, judging by your comments I'd guess you at 15 or 16. You say you're prior military? Nobody I've ever known uses improper acronyms when referring to the military if they've served. And a Colt H-Bar Delta with Riser? Where did you get that from?? Riser for what? Your optic? Cheekweld? What are you talking about? Clearing was GTG? The more you talk the more credibility you're losing here.
I hate when that happens. I really hate when novice gun people call it a " double feed" when it is always a failure to extract. I gave up on magpul Ctr stock . I carry a shorty m16 stock with h bar riser and israeli sling. The best therapy for jacked up hands is a cold Bud light.
@tanhelmet 1.I admit that I mistakenly identified this as a double feed. That was only for a moment until I saw I couldnt move the charging handle. However I'm anything but a novice. 2. The reason you may hear "double feed" most often is because it is NOT always a failure to extract, double feeds are much more common. 3.WTF is a "Shorty M16 stock?" supposed to be? Maybe you can explain that to all of us "Novice" shooters out here. 4. Israeli sling? WTF difference does that make?
@ffryan A few of my friends mentioned that to me but I'm not worried about it much. Parts wear and eventually fail. That's to be expected considering the amount of abuse and punishment I put on my rifle. I was in such a hurry to replace the stock I didnt bother taking photos of the broken one also, lol.
Oh, give Jimmy (Dozer) a ring at Magpul about this one. He's been good to me and though it's operator error, I'd still contact them to see what can be done.
ALWAYS collapse a stock completely to the end plate before mortaring. That way, you're impacting the end of the receiver extension and not the plastic lock inside of the stock.
When you do the mortar clearing drill, I've learned that you need to impact the butt where the extension tube is, and not the toe of the stock. I've seen LMT SOPMOD stocks, M4 stocks, MOE's, and CTR's broken this way, especially in cold weather. Great video though...pain is fear leaving the body.
Funny, but I am sooooo sorry lol. One thing this definitely points out is that any gun can fail, I'm sure your AR isn't a piece of crap if you've named her.
@ZackTheKack Thanks and you're right, she's no POS, she's what we call a "Working gun" Meaning, it's setup with nothing I don't need or use on it, no fluff or bling, just business. The lower reciever and the Aimpoint are the only original parts remaining on the gun. Though I built it exactly as it looks today, I've worn and replaced all the internals, some parts more than once, and I'm about 5000 rounds into the 3rd barrel.
that sucks. not only does it hurt when you smash the things then it hurts twice as bad when you have to get them out, this crap has happened to me a few times, not with the stock though. lol
@Frens03 You're completely right, and thanks. I just wanted to share the experience here for others to learn and because well... It makes people laugh.
@pittwm No kidding? I was using steel cased ammo. There are several types and the one I've learned to avoid at all costs is the laquer coated steel. They work fine in a bolt gun but in guns that generate alot of heat the laquer coating melts to the chamber. What type caused your malfunction?
@skirnirBG I've seen AKs go tits up before several times. There is no such thing as an unbreakable or unfoulable weapon. Period. Eventually, everything fails. I admit the AK can take more abuse and still go bang. But I chose my weapon over the AK because I hate the AKs dimestore trigger, trigger slap, lousy sights, lack of real estate for mounting optics that will hold zero, (without extreme height over bore issues), difficult to suppress, the mags weigh 3 times as much empty and so much more...
@skirnirBG Besides, one reason most AKs would never have this problem is that AKs usually don't have collapsable stocks. Unless you buy aftermarket products for people "Who want an AR but can only afford an AK" lol. And I have seen a few nasty failures to extract, broken cases, and even a catastrophic explosive failure of the bolt system which caused the receiver cover to come off breaking the nose and jaw of the shooter, destruction of the magazine lacerating the shooters right arm
@nufsikcarc I didnt think about that one, lol. If I had to I could always have someone use a cleaning rod to finish clearing the stuck case, once clear push out the pins and remove the upper receiver. Then it wouldnt look quite as dangerous walking into a hospital...
@SERVIAM2008. what I am saying is that your gun failed you first. It caused you to brake the buttstock trying to clear the malfunction. The guy in your video said he wouldn't get the magpul stock when that wasn't the proplem. The problem started with the gun not with the buttstock. Make sense?
@datzitteezy oh ok, yes that makes total sense, thanks for clearing that up. The guy in the video was me btw, the reason I was saying the stock wasnt the problem for my bad luck that day was another issue altogether. It was more of a joke between friends referring to drama with a certain female, lol.
@datzitteezy Plus, you can clear pretty much all malfunctions with the general tap rack, bang, or remove the magazine, rack, insert, rack and bang. I never understood the as a previous commentor said "mortar" style malfunction clearance, because if the case is stuck that hard, its better to switch to your handgun (which is why its there), and then clear it later with a rod.
@ELITEHAMSTER123 I'm not one to really question what and why the shooter did what he did. Switching to handgun would be great if the threat is within 100 yards but what if the target is 100+ yards down range? A pistol would not help at all at those distances. Im not sure how the shooter was training in this video so I can't say he should have transitioned to his pistol. I was just making a general observation as to what I thought the real failure was.
@datzitteezy Thanks for the defense and your points are good and valid. However this incident I can blame purely on my own mistakes. I've never been one to try to hide my mistakes made at the range and that's why i post them here. I feel they're important enough to be shared, discussed and worked out on the flat range by shooters before they encounter the same problems in a time is life situation. Plus, mistakes are generally very entertaining to watch, lol.
@ELITEHAMSTER123 you're right, I'm the shooter in the video who had the bad day and I don't have problems showing or admitting my mistakes. It always helps others learn including myself. I believe in training to fight so Illl fight as I trained. Unfortunately that's not what I practiced here. If it had been a real fight in close combat I would have transitioned immediately to my handgun. If I were at distance I would have tried standard clear drills. Id never mortar my rifle when under fire.
The "mortar" technique is commonly used to attempt to clear a stuck casing after attempting a tap/rack to clear the malfunction is unsuccessful. The proper way to perform the "mortar" is to first completely collapse the stock, and then while pulling back on the charging handle slam the stock onto the ground with the muzzle oriented to the sky. The broken stock and injury that occurred in this video were due to operator error. Pretty much ANY collapsible stock will break if not fully collapsed.
@falloutforever88 Use it all the time, I dont have many problems with it, the benefits have certainly outweighed the drawbacks considering the thousands of $ I've saved, but.... It could have contributed to this really bad ....day, lol.
@JEAirs0ft There were other "issues" I was dealing with besides this one at the time, and even though I was yelling at the rifle? The words were for someone else... you know what I mean, lol.
The captions made it seem like he's slammed it down in the past to clear tough jams. Maybe this weakened the stock's locking lever? Btw, put down the camera and help your friend! Lol!
@TheSid2 I've used that method before many times to clear a stuck case from the chamber. Not just with this weapon but many of them. The stock actually broke at 2 places on the frame itself, not the locking lever. ONMe person made a good point that I should have closed the stock completely prior to trying to "Mortar" my rifle. lol. Oh yeah, if my buddy had lowered the camera, I'd be upset after, even if it had been a life threatening situation, lol. Video is forever, lol!
@SERVIAM2008 the mortar technique is a very good one, i dont blame u for using it., jus bad luck this time haha, funny as hell though., MEDIC !!! hahah., theyre aint much space up inside that asap plate either., i know that had to hurt., damn.., btw., u said ur using the troy cqb stock., how do you like it so far?? worth buyin?? ive been thinkin bout gettin one., i really like the new one with the cutout for the garmin 401.., lemme kno man?? hope your all healed up hahah., good trainin though
@Vietboy1st My gloves are what protected my fingertips from becoming smashed or torn apart worse than they were. The first digits of both the forefinger and middle finger were stuck between the stock and the sling attachment point. A space just smaller than .5" Your analogy failed
@214MLI It was a failure to extract. With the bolt still locked up on the spent case. Double feed just rolled out of my mouth, lol. But good catch on your part, lol.
Just about any collapsible stock would give you problems during that clearing drill unless it was collapsed. Don't be too hard on MAGPUL their gear is pretty solid. Magpul Dynamics, whole nother story ;)
@SafetySolutionsAc I love Magpul products and I'll continue using them forever, use any product enough and you will find their failing points, no complaints about Magpul from me!
lol "YOU BITCH". I should name my rifles. Sometimes you cant beat an AK. Dont get me wrong, love my AR and everything, but 1 the AK wouldnt have malfunctioned, 2 the stock is fixed so you can slam it about all you want and your CTR wont break on you. 3 range was short so AK accuracy difficulties should be a non issue.
@locknloadvideo instead of the AK which fires the 7,62x39 you can get the AK74 in 5,45x39 or in the 5,56 NATO. Light and accurate, these light rounds are suited much better to this gun
thats why you use an ak.

Yeah, basic rule around equipment is don't put your booger hooks into areas that collapse, turn, or otherwise pinch and crush. Especially when banging them on the ground.
Dump that POS stock and get something from VLTOR.

LMT SOPMOD
DennyDucet 2 months ago
@DennyDucet I like the SOPMOD but I think it's way overpriced for what it offers. For about 50$ more I can step into the Magpul UBR which is probably the most versatile and robust combat gunstock ever made. And for about $25 less I can still use the Vltor E-mod stock which had very little differences from the SOPMOD.
SERVIAM2008 2 months ago
@SERVIAM2008 funny you say that. I have and use the EMOD. I love it.

@SERVIAM2008 That's good to know. I was highly considering that stock before I saw that video. I guess that's a substantial seal of approval considering you almost lost a finger in it, lol.
PocketDrummer 3 months ago
@PocketDrummer HAHA, ! Yeah I guess that does say alot. I don't believe there are any adjustable stocks out there that are failproof under abuse. Magpul makes a great piece of kit and they have a stock to fill the needs of any picky shooter from the basic MOE to the UBR or PRS. All of them are excellent. Check your inbox for more details.

tanhelmet 3 months ago
@tanhelmet That would be really stupid to use by choice. Maybe for emergencies, but NEVER by choice. 550 cord stretches, not something you want your sling to do. Not to mention how uncomfortable it would be for that cord to dig into your shoulder for a few hours....

The best therapy for jacked up hands is a cold Bud light.
tanhelmet 3 months ago

Parts wear and eventually fail. jonconsiglio 3 months ago
ALWAYS collapse a stock completely to the end plate before mortaring. That way, you're impacting the end of the receiver extension and not the plastic lock inside of the stock.
jonconsiglio 3 months ago 2
When you do the mortar clearing drill, I've learned that you need to impact the butt where the extension tube is, and not the toe of the stock. I've seen LMT SOPMOD stocks, M4 stocks, MOE's, and CTR's broken this way, especially in cold weather. Great video though...pain is fear leaving the body.
LRRPFco52 3 months ago
Funny, but I am sooooo sorry lol. One thing this definitely points out is that any gun can fail, I'm sure your AR isn't a piece of crap if you've named her.
ZackTheKack 3 months ago
@ZackTheKack Thanks and you're right, she's no POS, she's what we call a "Working gun" Meaning, it's setup with nothing I don't need or use on it, no fluff or bling, just business. The lower reciever and the Aimpoint are the only original parts remaining on the gun. Though I built it exactly as it looks today, I've worn and replaced all the internals, some parts more than once, and I'm about 5000 rounds into the 3rd barrel.
SERVIAM2008 3 months ago

Were you using Steel case wolf? They get welded to the chamber of my Noveske Shorty after 15 rounds or so.
pittwm 4 months ago
@pittwm No kidding? I was using steel cased ammo. There are several types and the one I've learned to avoid at all costs is the laquer coated steel. They work fine in a bolt gun but in guns that generate alot of heat the laquer coating melts to the chamber. What type caused your malfunction?
SERVIAM2008 4 months ago
AK47 mate...Ak47 never have this problem.
skirnirBG 4 months ago
@skirnirBG I've seen AKs go tits up before several times. There is no such thing as an unbreakable or unfoulable weapon. Period. Eventually, everything fails. I admit the AK can take more abuse and still go bang. But I chose my weapon over the AK because I hate the AKs dimestore trigger, trigger slap, lousy sights, lack of real estate for mounting optics that will hold zero, (without extreme height over bore issues), difficult to suppress, the mags weigh 3 times as much empty and so much more...
SERVIAM2008 4 months ago 15
@skirnirBG Besides, one reason most AKs would never have this problem is that AKs usually don't have collapsable stocks. Unless you buy aftermarket products for people "Who want an AR but can only afford an AK" lol. And I have seen a few nasty failures to extract, broken cases, and even a catastrophic explosive failure of the bolt system which caused the receiver cover to come off breaking the nose and jaw of the shooter, destruction of the magazine lacerating the shooters right arm

datzitteezy 4 months ago
@datzitteezy ????? Still trying to make sense of that one......
SERVIAM2008 4 months ago
@SERVIAM2008. what I am saying is that your gun failed you first. It caused you to brake the buttstock trying to clear the malfunction. The guy in your video said he wouldn't get the magpul stock when that wasn't the proplem. The problem started with the gun not with the buttstock. Make sense?
datzitteezy 4 months ago 2
@datzitteezy oh ok, yes that makes total sense, thanks for clearing that up. The guy in the video was me btw, the reason I was saying the stock wasnt the problem for my bad luck that day was another issue altogether. It was more of a joke between friends referring to drama with a certain female, lol.
SERVIAM2008 4 months ago
@datzitteezy Plus, you can clear pretty much all malfunctions with the general tap rack, bang, or remove the magazine, rack, insert, rack and bang. I never understood the as a previous commentor said "mortar" style malfunction clearance, because if the case is stuck that hard, its better to switch to your handgun (which is why its there), and then clear it later with a rod.
ELITEHAMSTER123 4 months ago
@ELITEHAMSTER123 I'm not one to really question what and why the shooter did what he did. Switching to handgun would be great if the threat is within 100 yards but what if the target is 100+ yards down range? A pistol would not help at all at those distances. Im not sure how the shooter was training in this video so I can't say he should have transitioned to his pistol. I was just making a general observation as to what I thought the real failure was.
datzitteezy 4 months ago
@datzitteezy Thanks for the defense and your points are good and valid. However this incident I can blame purely on my own mistakes. I've never been one to try to hide my mistakes made at the range and that's why i post them here. I feel they're important enough to be shared, discussed and worked out on the flat range by shooters before they encounter the same problems in a time is life situation. Plus, mistakes are generally very entertaining to watch, lol.
SERVIAM2008 4 months ago
@ELITEHAMSTER123 you're right, I'm the shooter in the video who had the bad day and I don't have problems showing or admitting my mistakes. It always helps others learn including myself. I believe in training to fight so Illl fight as I trained. Unfortunately that's not what I practiced here. If it had been a real fight in close combat I would have transitioned immediately to my handgun. If I were at distance I would have tried standard clear drills. Id never mortar my rifle when under fire.
SERVIAM2008 4 months ago
He took it like a man. Ya can't argue with that.
fargo007 4 months ago
The "mortar" technique is commonly used to attempt to clear a stuck casing after attempting a tap/rack to clear the malfunction is unsuccessful. The proper way to perform the "mortar" is to first completely collapse the stock, and then while pulling back on the charging handle slam the stock onto the ground with the muzzle oriented to the sky. The broken stock and injury that occurred in this video were due to operator error. Pretty much ANY collapsible stock will break if not fully collapsed.

The captions made it seem like he's slammed it down in the past to clear tough jams. Maybe this weakened the stock's locking lever? Btw, put down the camera and help your friend! Lol!
TheSid2 5 months ago
@TheSid2 I've used that method before many times to clear a stuck case from the chamber. Not just with this weapon but many of them. The stock actually broke at 2 places on the frame itself, not the locking lever. ONMe person made a good point that I should have closed the stock completely prior to trying to "Mortar" my rifle. lol. Oh yeah, if my buddy had lowered the camera, I'd be upset after, even if it had been a life threatening situation, lol. Video is forever, lol!
