I go for NOOK (mostly because I have one and never used a KINDLE). It's not an e-reader if you can play games and go on the Internet. I want an e-reader to read. And not to play games. Or listen to an audio-book. I don't care what you say. The KINDLE is way to over hyped.
people are starting to ruin ereaders, there basically turning it in to a "knock-off" of the iPad.
Sure you can check your email and search the dictionary but i feel like with the kindle fire and nook tablet it would be hard to focus on reading. Anyways i would go nook i have one and LOVE IT

@Antioxidantt I like the nook, I don't know much about the kindle but I like how it gives me a "reading a book" feel. I don't need a fancy tablet/internet browser or anything...I just want it to read books.
@TheCatsLastWord Same here. I bought the Nook for my sis for Xmas .. I love that it is touch screen and very simple and elegant design, whereas the Kindle is covered in buttons and feels more like a "device" and less an electronic book.I haven't used the nook much yet but I love how it feels, how it buffers the pages so you only see the annoying 'black' screen every 6 pages or so, how you can swipe the page turns with your finger on the screen itself, more focused design, etc.
@pulmonq2 Yea, I bought a book and loaded some of my .pdf files on it. It makes me want to read more tbh, because it's so convenient and easy to use. The touch screen froze on me today, I was like oh noooes but I just reset it and it started working again--just incase that happens with your sister.
I'd still rather have the nook. Its based on an open source system, so it can be modified. I want an e-book. I don't need audio, I don't need games, I don't need apps... I want to read books. Battery life, more book selection, and touch screen... Nook wins
in my opinion, both are great devices, and pretty equal. so it boils down on which device you can find the best deal on. got the kindle keyboard 3G for $80.
@DancinGranny55 I'd say kindle touch, it has all the additional features that come with kindles, as well as most of what the kindle 3 lacked compared to the nook
...kindle touch has no page turn buttons (unlike nook easy touch which has both touch and buttons) and the web browser does NOT work over 3g. wifi only. the kindle 3 3g has free 3g web browsing so you can do things like check email wherever. kindle 3 text to speech and mp3 playback is useless.
I have kindle 3 3g and love it for it's free 3g web browser, but it was much pricier for that ability and its text to speech, mp3 playback and speakers are useless. Don't get the non 3g kindle 3. Truthfully, the buttons are distracting and it is bigger than you will like.
for simple ereader, nook easy touch has both buttons and a touch screen (kindle touch is only touch) and feels better in your hand, and you can get it even cheaper than kindle special offers version.
@comradecommedy well yeah I was talking about the prices only, and I check both websites and the nook simple touch was $139 at first but now is $99. Before they were significantly different, now the only difference regarding prices is between the nook tablet and the kindle fire I think. Also you have to compare the kindle touch vs the nook simple touch, and kindle fire against the nook tablet
can u navigate on the zoomed pdf file via touch? (i mean, like moving the screen with a touch of a finger). and one more thing - is the nook's dictionary functional on text-based pdf files?
who needs like five ereaders i mean obvislouy he bought them and anyways i choose the nook no disscusion even if i didnty know what it wus barnes and noble does not do u wrong!!!!!
I love my Kindle, but tried out the Nook tonight and was very impressed (and jealous). The touch screen is very responsible (it's like a Macbook trackpad - even a light brush of the finger works). Another plus, because you can turn pages with the screen or the buttons, you have more options for how you hold the Nook (the Kindle forces a hand position that is a bit cramped for me). You also dispense with the keyboard and tiny and fussy trackpad navigation. Nook's screen is about 90-95% as good.
Pretty good review, but it was missing a couple of things. First of all, you talked about the sizes of the different devices, but I didn't hear any discussion of the different screen sizes. Also, is screen quality comparable? How about battery life? How responsive is the nook touchscreen? How sturdy are they, and how easy/comfortable to handle? What materials are the cases? How does Kindle's audio affect battery life? How attractive and intuitive are the menus of each device? Etc.
@Semiotichazey i use my kindle with the cover LED and the mp3 player turned on, and i get about a week of battery life with moderate 3G use. Without any of these three features, i get between 3 and 4 weeks. Hope this helps.
one nice thing about Kindle is they have reading apps on other devices - which I find handy because if I forget the Kindle (which happens a lot), I can continue reading the same book on the iPhone/laptop. not sure the Nook offers this..
great review man - not about to jump the kindle ship anytime soon. can easily convert epub to mobi using calibre, if I need to. and who needs a touch screen to turn pages..
The position of the lighting in this video is unfair to the Nook Simple Touch. If you favor the Kindle, then you placed the Nook on the left side on purpose. How about you switch around the ereaders and place the Kindle on the left side for a change?
wtf is wrong with everyone, who the hell wants (or needs) a webrowser in an ereader? and btw ya the kindle looks better because there's a light shining from the left side.
I agree. I could care less about having a web browser to surf the internet on an ereader. I would NOT want to get distracted from reading and end up surfing the internet.
@jjbinkes Not the best web browser i agree. But 3g access anywhere is handy. Kindle does have darker text. I like both but lean a bit towards kindle. 1)clearer text 2)better book selection 3)better customer service 4)a more time tested device.
@jjbinkes People like the idea of carrying less with them. That's why e-readers are so popular. students no longer have to carry 5 different books with them to class- and commuters no longer have to carry bulky papers on the train to work... If you have a browser on an ereader you then no longer have to carry your day-planner around with you because you can use google docs and google calender.. things like that. It's all about streamlining.
@jjbinkes Also to add... I think people who want a browser on an ereader aren't really looking to do major things on the browser- Otherwise they would just get an Ipad or tablet. People who want a browser on an ereader just want to read books and do basic things like check email and check their calender. Then they can leave the blackberry and or day planner at home.
@lauraleesmithagain I appreciate your opinion, but the nook is called the Simple Touch Ereader, meaning it focuses on the buyer, ya know, actually reading books, not focusing on reading google docs. After all, then what am I paying hundreds of dollars for my smartphone and laptop? Or is it too much effort to carry along my sub 5 lb laptop or pull out my phone from my pocket?
The contrast IS actually better on the kindle. Have had the kindle for 1 week, read a book and now bought the nook yesterday and notice the contrast is not as crisp. However the lack of crispness seems to evade you after a few minutes--until you pick up the kindle. Still the touch screen and soft encasing are nice. VERY tough decision on which one to return.
Idk how the Nook fairs in this department, but the Kindle has been quite sturdy for myself. It has survived 20+ falls (half on a carpet, half on bricks), and a puppy biting it and throwing it around (don't ask). I think with the touch screen of the Nook, going through that kind of abuse would be detrimental to it's ability to function.
I don't think either of them are particularly good for college text books.
Text books have diagrams and illustrations - which will be distorted in a 6'' e-ink screen.
If you're simply referring to text books that have little to no diagrams that are of minor importance, Barnes and Noble has a wider selection. To be sure, you should determine what classes you would like to take and see which company offers more..
The Kindle wins. It's more complete, has more memory, and it's faster. And who cares about touch screen?? The Kindle has more battery life and is more comfortable.
Actually, the Nook has an expandable memory (up to 32 gb, compared to the 4 gb of unexpandable memory on the Kindle). Having owned both, the Kindle gets very laggy when there are 1000+ books on it, whereas the Nook doesn't.
The Nook has significantly more battery life(~twice as much), as well.
@cmadison93 "Battery Life of Up to Two Months - A single charge lasts up to two months with wireless off" According to the amazon store... wow that is really tricky wording XD
The touch screen is quite an important feature as well. The navigation pad on the Kindle is quite small and isn't as convenient to use as the touch screen, if you are over the age of 14.
I'm curious to see what the Kindle 4 will be like, though.
nook wins I guess, but the kindle doesn't do it's refreshing so often like in 3:20 so why don't they just make it the same as the nook, bloo'dy bstards
Ok you can not watch videos on the Nook! But the Nook's a really good e-reader unlike the Kindle, Nool has an expandable library space with a micro sd card. Up to 32 gigs. And unlike the Kindle the Nook's keyboard is a touch keyboard and not plastered looking ugly on the device. I find that a bit distracting to read with. And the Nook allpws you to put up your pictures as your screensaver. My aunt owns a Kindle and doesn't like lookong at tje creepy faces. Sorry I'm with Nook and I just got min
@DMTfan You just made "pdf" possessive by using an apostrophe, put an s on the end of media (already plural), and spelled "fag' with three Gs. You need to steal some more books.
@tillerman002 Uhh, the guy called me a fag for buying books and then had a bunch of grammatical errors. It's called irony. He saw the humor in the situation, but you can't apparently.
@tillerman002 Just because you didn't catch the humor doesn't mean no one else did. It's pretty clear you get your grammar corrected all the time and now lash out unreasonably on anyone that mentions errors.
I'm looking at the Nook and the Kindle side byside and I don't see any difference in the text - especially when reading a book. They looks different in this video, but live and in person, they aren't.
I think it does the full refresh on every page turn on the Kindle (I own one) to remove the faint shadow image from the previous page. It's more noticeable if you wake from sleep since you can see the shadow from the screensaver image. After a couple of refreshes it completely disappears (meaning if you wake from sleep you see the faint shadow on the Home Page but when you choose a book to read it refreshes again and the shadow is gone.)
I have two Nooks, and 3 Kindles. Kindle and Amazon are better than Nook and B&N. Feature by feature, Nook is definitely a better pdf reader, since you can change font size. Kindle has better connectivity (in the Nook, even wifi fails more often than not), you can buy books while on vacation in France, Greece, Mexico or China, no glare while on beach or sport ground, etc. Dictionaries work much better for the Kindle than for the Nook. B&N should offer better dictionary support.
1 word: glare. The Kindle has less glare than the Nook, and coming from a former Sony Touch user that's all there is to know. About formats, just use Calibre and it doesn't matter how you download it, epub or what not.
But don't accept glare in exchange for an interface, 'cause that's supposed to be a book for chrissakes, the only interface they normally have are their covers and indexes...
it handles PDFs much better, compared 2 kindle, so shut up.... i used my friends kindle once 2 download a series that i put on my nook and it was so BAD on the kindle.. just 2 let u know
I just bought the Nook this morning, and I think it's a great e-reader, I cherish it for a long time. Lol this one guy when I was coming out of the B&N store was talking on his phone, and then I was walking out with the Nook, He yelled you'll love your Nook, And thats when I new I got the better one. :) all in all, in the future I'll buy the kindle to see what it's like. RANDOM 12 yr. old kid :)
@haloman800 I want good pdf performance without having to mess about with nerdy crap like rooting. Why can't they just give us all the functions we want without all the messing about? I'm not at school so my time is too valuable to be messing about trying to get things to work as they should. That's why I will go for Kindle every time and leave the Nook to the unemployed with time to kill or the nerds.
I own both! I like the nook more but that's unfortunate cause it's caused me a lot of heartache since buying it. I've owned all kindles and the kindle three is awesome and it's battery is amazing. Never have had a single issue or glitch with it. On the other hand I like the feel and look and having the touch screen on the nook so much more, I just wish it would work properly one time! I've only bought three books so far but have had to contact customer device to get a proper download every time
I believe you can sideload third-party books onto the Kindle as well, you just have to convert them from epub to the Kindle's native format using a program like Calibre.
I love my nook- and as most people already know, it does have both built in bluetooth and a hidden browser.. Additionally, rooted and you can download the Kindle app (as well as others) giving you more buying options. I have never used the Kindle, so I cannot speak negatively about it. I do not like the small keys - and wanted a touch screen so, the Nook was my choice although I usually by my books from Amazon. I suggest viewing is more updated videos re: the NST.
CORRECTION..... The nook touch has a web browser.. Just go to the menu and hit search and type in the website URL and BAMM, you have the best e-reader and you can go into settings and turn on landscape mode.... Obviously this guy is bias...
@shockey777 The web browser on the Nook is abysmal. It crashes with little to no provocation. It's not even listed as a feature on the Nook because Barnes & Noble knows it's terrible and they don't want people to use it.
Kindle's browser is slow, but it actually works (at least well enough for them to acknowledge its existence on their device).
So far, my experience with the Nook's web browser has been frustrating to say the least.
@paconava01 I'm aware of the web browser that's built in, but my conscience prevents me from calling it a "functional" web browser. When trying to use the search feature on many websites (including Google and IMDb), it immediately crashes to the home screen. The Nook was not built with a web browser in mind, and Barnes & Noble does not market it as even having such a feature. Hopefully future updates will fix the instability problems and they will release a fully functioning web browser.
@MrChabalounet The thing is, if I want a web browser that doesn't crash every 15 seconds, I shouldn't have to worry about going through a warranty voiding process.
I go for NOOK (mostly because I have one and never used a KINDLE). It's not an e-reader if you can play games and go on the Internet. I want an e-reader to read. And not to play games. Or listen to an audio-book. I don't care what you say. The KINDLE is way to over hyped.

Don't forget to mention how mobi/azw files (for Kindle) are significantly larger (1.5-2x larger) than epub files.
cmadison93 6 months ago
The Kindle wins. It's more complete, has more memory, and it's faster. And who cares about touch screen?? The Kindle has more battery life and is more comfortable.
kavilhas1 6 months ago
@kavilhas1
Actually, the Nook has an expandable memory (up to 32 gb, compared to the 4 gb of unexpandable memory on the Kindle). Having owned both, the Kindle gets very laggy when there are 1000+ books on it, whereas the Nook doesn't.
The Nook has significantly more battery life(~twice as much), as well.
cmadison93 6 months ago
@cmadison93 nah man kindle has 2 month battery life i believe
nook is somewhere around 10 days or 2 weeks (someone correct me please if im wrong :D)
warhawkpro 6 months ago
@warhawkpro
Nook - 2 month (~2 weeks with regular reading)
Kindle - 1 month (~1 week with regular reading)
I've owned both.
cmadison93 6 months ago
@cmadison93 "Battery Life of Up to Two Months - A single charge lasts up to two months with wireless off" According to the amazon store... wow that is really tricky wording XD

Lol, I've only had my Kindle go for about 27 days without a charge, with wifi off, and just standing there.

@cmadison93 Which one do yo find better?
hectorjr 6 months ago
@hectorjr
I find the Nook Simple Touch to be far more enjoyable than the Kindle 3.
Although, I have heard there is supposed to be a new Kindle released soon.
cmadison93 5 months ago
@kavilhas1
The touch screen is quite an important feature as well. The navigation pad on the Kindle is quite small and isn't as convenient to use as the touch screen, if you are over the age of 14.
I'm curious to see what the Kindle 4 will be like, though.

nook doesn't have text to speech function like the kindle! thumbs down!

nook wins I guess, but the kindle doesn't do it's refreshing so often like in 3:20 so why don't they just make it the same as the nook, bloo'dy bstards

When would you ever use 32GBs of ebooks? You can't even put mp3's on the nook because it doesn't support that function

foreversoulm8tes288 6 months ago
Ok you can not watch videos on the Nook! But the Nook's a really good e-reader unlike the Kindle, Nool has an expandable library space with a micro sd card. Up to 32 gigs. And unlike the Kindle the Nook's keyboard is a touch keyboard and not plastered looking ugly on the device. I find that a bit distracting to read with. And the Nook allpws you to put up your pictures as your screensaver. My aunt owns a Kindle and doesn't like lookong at tje creepy faces. Sorry I'm with Nook and I just got min

@drumsfightingandstuf Lol, you buy books? :)) I download pdf's from torrents and other illegal sharing medias ...faggg!

@DMTfan You just made "pdf" possessive by using an apostrophe, put an s on the end of media (already plural), and spelled "fag' with three Gs. You need to steal some more books.

@drumsfightingandstuf and no one else see's the humor. sorry, grammar checks aren't funny. sorry!

@tillerman002 Just because you didn't catch the humor doesn't mean no one else did. It's pretty clear you get your grammar corrected all the time and now lash out unreasonably on anyone that mentions errors.

I think it does the full refresh on every page turn on the Kindle (I own one) to remove the faint shadow image from the previous page. It's more noticeable if you wake from sleep since you can see the shadow from the screensaver image. After a couple of refreshes it completely disappears (meaning if you wake from sleep you see the faint shadow on the Home Page but when you choose a book to read it refreshes again and the shadow is gone.)
fixman88 7 months ago
I have two Nooks, and 3 Kindles. Kindle and Amazon are better than Nook and B&N. Feature by feature, Nook is definitely a better pdf reader, since you can change font size. Kindle has better connectivity (in the Nook, even wifi fails more often than not), you can buy books while on vacation in France, Greece, Mexico or China, no glare while on beach or sport ground, etc. Dictionaries work much better for the Kindle than for the Nook. B&N should offer better dictionary support.

so the nook doesn't have "landscape mode"? :(
lokeradekadente81 7 months ago
1 word: glare. The Kindle has less glare than the Nook, and coming from a former Sony Touch user that's all there is to know. About formats, just use Calibre and it doesn't matter how you download it, epub or what not.
But don't accept glare in exchange for an interface, 'cause that's supposed to be a book for chrissakes, the only interface they normally have are their covers and indexes...

RANDOM 12 yr. old kid :)

meandmusicforever1 7 months ago
@meandmusicforever1 Nook doesn't handle PDFs as well as the Kindle, so definitely not the best for me.
dtz1000 7 months ago
@dtz1000 Root the Nook & you can get an excellent PDF-reader, a better web-browser, & even the Kindle & Kobo e-reader apps.
haloman800 7 months ago
@haloman800 I want good pdf performance without having to mess about with nerdy crap like rooting. Why can't they just give us all the functions we want without all the messing about? I'm not at school so my time is too valuable to be messing about trying to get things to work as they should. That's why I will go for Kindle every time and leave the Nook to the unemployed with time to kill or the nerds.
dtz1000 7 months ago
I've only bought three books so far but have had to contact customer device to get a proper download every time
07andmar 7 months ago
I believe you can sideload third-party books onto the Kindle as well, you just have to convert them from epub to the Kindle's native format using a program like Calibre.
filmdumb 7 months ago
I love my nook- and as most people already know, it does have both built in bluetooth and a hidden browser.. Additionally, rooted and you can download the Kindle app (as well as others) giving you more buying options. I have never used the Kindle, so I cannot speak negatively about it. I do not like the small keys - and wanted a touch screen so, the Nook was my choice although I usually by my books from Amazon. I suggest viewing is more updated videos re: the NST.

@RmBzUtube do u have this nook, the nook color, or the original nook? what makes the kindle better?
MrHolesinmypants 8 months ago
CORRECTION..... The nook touch has a web browser.. Just go to the menu and hit search and type in the website URL and BAMM, you have the best e-reader and you can go into settings and turn on landscape mode.... Obviously this guy is bias...
shockey777 8 months ago 22
@shockey777 You cannot turn on landscape on the nook...And the web browser is not officially supported, although it was worth a mention.
Rumplestilzken 7 months ago 5
@shockey777 sorry, but: "you have the best e-reader"?? really?? -.- u must be delusional the kindle can do that too
kavilhas1 6 months ago
@shockey777 What good is the web browser without free global 3g? :P
djruinerdotcom 6 months ago
@shockey777 Being incorrect doesn't make you bias. Relax.
neoikon 6 months ago
@shockey777 The web browser on the Nook is abysmal. It crashes with little to no provocation. It's not even listed as a feature on the Nook because Barnes & Noble knows it's terrible and they don't want people to use it.
Kindle's browser is slow, but it actually works (at least well enough for them to acknowledge its existence on their device).
So far, my experience with the Nook's web browser has been frustrating to say the least.
foodlovingpig 6 months ago
@foodlovingpig Not a problem once rooted.
MrChabalounet 6 months ago
@MrChabalounet That's nice, but on the Kindle you get a functional web browser without breaking the warranty and possibly the device itself.
foodlovingpig 6 months ago

paconava01 6 months ago
@paconava01 I'm aware of the web browser that's built in, but my conscience prevents me from calling it a "functional" web browser. When trying to use the search feature on many websites (including Google and IMDb), it immediately crashes to the home screen. The Nook was not built with a web browser in mind, and Barnes & Noble does not market it as even having such a feature. Hopefully future updates will fix the instability problems and they will release a fully functioning web browser.
foodlovingpig 6 months ago
@foodlovingpig Unrooted, they won't notice anything. And it's impossible to brick an android device only by rooting it.
MrChabalounet 6 months ago
@MrChabalounet The thing is, if I want a web browser that doesn't crash every 15 seconds, I shouldn't have to worry about going through a warranty voiding process.
foodlovingpig 6 months ago
