Out of all the comments gerally made about the musicianship in Japan, no one seems to mention how savage Jansen is as a drummer. His drumming in 'Sons of Pioneers' and 'My New Career' amazingly complex yet satisfyingly poptastic. He even makes this song a lesson is style and elegance over bravado. Genius!
I love Japan, and have a particular love for mick, my son plays bass guitar, and I point him toward Mick and encourage him to emulate him..what a guy and what a band...RIP Mick never forgotten..we will remember...say hello....
My favourite band ever but only just started listening to them again recently, still sound fantastic. You'd have to go a long way to find better musicians that these guys. Thanks for the vidoes, making a middle aged man smile again. cheers
I remember playing along to this track in the living room with my fretless bass back in the early 80's, trying the Karn shuffle and falling flat on my face!!!
compare this with the 1981 version at Hammersmith Odeon, it's like Masami's guitar is buried in the mix to hide him. I think he was the big downfall of their last tour.
i agree. There was something etheriel about japan live circa 1981. I saw them live at the Venue and the lyceum and then the Hammersmith Odeon .Japan were stunning. The playing had become telepathic. and the audience seemed to know they were in the right place at the right time.Ive never had that feeling at a gig since .The 'canvas' tour was different. The sylvian/karn situation,no Rob Dean and Masami's Guitar volume, playing and stage theatrics flawed the magic they'd created live..
Great band-great song.

Unfortunately Mick Karn was diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer
this month (June 2010).
You can make a donation toward his medical care at his official web site.
Although a founder member of Japan Mick is not a rich man and is living in Cyprus with his wife and son.
