This console was far to dear at the time and yet the games were nothing special, i stuck with my snes and megacd which combined where cheaper than the 3do
@killkenny5000 Pretty much. To think it took, what, 15-20 years for a comparable port (PSN/XBLA), and then still beat by the 3DO with its amazing music.
Its strange how the 3do is almost forgotten by all the gaming historians....For the time it was a very powerful and capable system but like the Neo Geo, you had to be bloody rich to own it!
The SNES was still doing very well, much like the Wii was when PS3 and Xbox 360 was trying to get a better hold on the markets.
The 3DO had some good games, sadly a lot was based on the wow factor of Graphics that was not possible on any other system at that time, many also going the cheap wow looks real motion video games that look like a movie but have limited playability.
the 3D0 high price and news of the PSX and Saturn killed off the console
Also Road Rash was the best version as of that time, and is still one of the best verions of the series, Need for Speed was quite ground breaking. Super Street Fighter 2 X was the most Arcade Perfect version on the market.
Its just a shame that a lot of Games was released purely on visuals and not playable.
Also in those days Sega and Nintendo had a monoply on a lot of Software/Games developers to them selves.
i had 8 of those ...... maybe before 15 years !!!! but c'mon this isn't the best 20 one , i remember a game with a lot of asses and in @ first u just have a knife , and there is spacesport and another 2 games i can't remember anything about them
Wrong, the best was star control 2,no 3do game could cause bioware to make a series similar to it, trust me, mass effect would exist as the mass effect we knoe today without star control 2
The 3DO was an amazing machine back in 93/94 - and only the price prevented it from being a success.... It destroyed the Jaguar - and was a true next-generation 3D machine with CD.... When the Playstation & Saturn arrived, though, they destroyed the 3DO... The machine was part of a strange transition period, that was too early for most people.. so they waited for better machines, as they still liked the 16-bit consoles.
Space Hulk VOTBA was an amazing game. It's funny how even though it was on the 3DO first it was ported to the PC and later the PS1 to keep it alive.
If there was one version that was the best, I'd say the PC version if only for the networked multiplayer. The controls were a bit hard on the PC though if you didn't use a gamepad, because it had no native mouse support.
I'd be ashamed to admit I dished out 700 bucks back then for this piece of worthless plastic. My friend has this system in Uni and I WASN'T impressed. You' re what's wrong with the economic crisis: Wastig money left and right like it's water.
@gumdo666 lol cool it bra. First off there was no economic crisis in 1993. We were in fact in a period of historic economic growth. All I'm saying is that during that time there were far more than just 2 consoles to choose from, it represented a period of pioneering hardware development. Also some of these titles defined current gen genre experiences, Alone in the Dark in particular was a huge inspiration for the Resident Evil series. Get your facts straight and quit trolling homey.
My facts were straight, but I guess I sounded like a jerk. Sorry about that. I still think this potentially (back then) impressive machine wasted its power on garbage games. software was the killer, as well as price. Same thing with PC Engine(TG16). Look at Castlevania Rondo....awesome game....but machine didn't live up tp its potential. Same as your Alone in the Dark comment :)
I like how you put Way of the Warrior on the list, as if to say the only noteworthy reputation it has is its infamy as a reminder of how truly bad third-rate fighting games can be.
There was actually a successor for the 3DO called M2, but Panasonic cancelled it just a few weeks before it was going to be released in 1997. Panasonic was worried they wouldn't be able to compete with Sony PlayStation 1.
@RigoKellerColas It wasn't more powerful but it became victim to the same marketing mistakes Atari made despite Atari having the 64-bit Jaguar.
Quote from Wikipedia on the 3DO, "...most of the company's games were critically panned. Consumers also had no interest in purchasing sequels to the earlier 3DO games that disappointed them, and the preventative pricing of said 3DO software forced initial 3DO supporters to eventually flock to Sony's PlayStation for next-gen video gaming".
I was on board a military ship one time, and they had a 3do flight simulator. It was in NYC. I got to play, and run around in the ship. I felt like a bad ass.
@applemctom 3DO version of Super Turbo is one of the worst ports of the game available. I think the only one worse is the PC version. On top of that, the 3DO bad was pad for it. Trying to use punches is horrible, having to use the shoulders and play button. Not knocking the game itself, just think a better 3DO title could have taken its place on the list, such as Clock Tower. Good calls on D and Gex though.
great =) Deadalus encounter, psychic detective, star fighter, mega race, Sockwave 1,2, street fighter, quarintine, wer probebly my most played games (that i had anyway.

@YukoAsho well wolfenstein 3D on 3DO is the same version to MAC version
they both have same gameplay and same graphics and both have 90 levels
but i like 3DO better since your using a controller instead of a keyboard + better music
PC, PS3/360 only go up to 60 levels
and SNES atari jaguar only go up to 30 levels
