police brutality my ass!, I remember this, it's past 2am and ppl were screaming in the streets, the police got called to break up the crowd, I'm sure alot of these students were drunk and being assholes to the police, from the video it looks like this deuche refuses to get up off the ground and the police are trying to pick them up, that's not brutality go grow a pair of balls
My co-worker has two friends who were trying to get a sub there and ended up arrested instead. One writes for the City Paper, so you bet this will be written up in great detail in the next issue. They both tried to record a video but the police smashed their phones! And today my boyfriend came back from Velocipede saying that a guy there had his bike stomped on by a policeman...he's not sure why.
bottom line... dont screw with the police, or else youre gonna get tazed. Stuff like this happens every day and it could have been much worse. Imagine if we were in China, those 18 people probably would have been shot.
who said they screwed with police? witnesses say the crowd was dispersing and the cops were agressive. multiple reports of assaulting people with cameras, one of them a reporter.
Yeah imagine, getting arrested supporting the president-elect....
They screwed with the police in directly ignoring the officers' comands. Really, cry all you want because nothing is going to happen about it... whether it was right or wrong. My point was that no matter the circumstances, people need to obey police orders. There are a lot of bad cops out there and there are lots of good. Obviously people didn't listen. If people had listened, they wouldn't have been there to get tazed or record the instance. If you don't like it, Canada's up north.
I witnessed the events unfold with some friends and was appalled by the way many of the police were behaving. Although a few students may have been yelling inappropriate things at the police, none of the students I watched being taken had done anything which warranted arrest. In fact, from my position it looked as though they were randomly selecting celebrators and placing them in wagons. I am truly disappointed in the Baltimore Police.
Also, I'm pretty sure there are noise laws in Baltimore, although I'm not sure what they are. Most states have a noise law asking for quiet after 11-12 am, depending on the day of the week and state.
It was 2 am, and as you can see, the police were there, to the point that they were arresting people, and people were still screaming 'Obama'. The newspapers attest that people were chanting they wouldn't leave. I live in Wolman (like..a block away), and YES it was LOUD.
this was a celebration of the election of a president! i'm sure in other countries it's a lot rowdier than some CV folks. Plus, noise laws = citations, not police agression, chargeless arrests, preventing a journalist from reporting it, etc... it's how the police reacted that's the problem.
A major argument was that the celebration was disturbing Union Memorial. The hospital has a lot of sick patients that could have been bothered by this gathering. You DO have to admit that it was pretty loud.

we are jhu students that were there yesterday. The police were absolutely unnecessary. For God's sake, we were celebrating! There was no violence anger, everyone was happy and hugging and chanting yes we can. Stupid Police.
Yes it was a happy occassion and even the police understood, but the problem was not so much the noise but the people in the middle of the street who kept refusing to get back on the sidewalks. You can only tell a Baltimore City Cop to go F**K themselves so many times before they decide to do something about it. I don't think any of it marred the occassion one bit.
"...because they didn't leave the area when ordered" WTF! This is the USA not a police state! See what 8 years of Republican desensitizing and brain washing will do to you!
...and in the USA we have something called laws that the police are expected to enforce...disobeying an officer's order to disperse has its consequences and quite a few of those arrested literally called out to be arrested and got what they asked for.
I trying to drive home through here last night. The so-called college students, who were acting less civilized than a pace of baboons, should have left when ordered to do so. What isn't apparent in the video is the level of disrespect toward the police such as cursing. Also, there is a major hospital within steps of the video; the celebrants obviously had no respect for the sick folks, because they were outside causing a commotion for over one hour before the police lost their patience.
Please, it just some college students have a celebration about a big victory in our history yesterday. As a student at Hopkins and speaking for a few of us, it was proudest I among others have been to be American in a long time. Yes, it got slightly out-of-hand such that the police came to supervise but it was peaceful and no one got hurt. And to call us babboons is ignorant at most; you can save that for the people in Bush's administration.
I was there and I thought the police were being exceptionally patient - considering at first all they were asking was for the celebration to stay out of the street. After over an hour of non-compliance by the celebrators, it's just obivous that the only way for anything to happen is if consequences are made apparent.
I witnessed my good friend get tazed outside of Bradford. they kept all the people over night in central booking and they were just released today. Fuck to police
If they were arrested it was because they didn't leave the area when ordered, even if they were just onlookers and didn't feel like they had to listen. (stupid) I know some even put their hands on officers- yikes!
Did you see the kid get tazered on the steps of the dorm?
"Take pictures! Take pictures!" LOL! The folks celebrating were actually doing a pretty good job of keeping civil, except for the loud noise at 1am. I think the passing cars beeping their horns in support got the crowd extra loud. Hop Cops and the Community Liason tried their best at keeping everyone out of the streets and onto the sidewalks but in the end most didn't listen. The Baltimore Police actually were more patient than they could have been.

The gathering was blocking entrances to the hospital. The police do not need to justify their actions.

That Subway shop is across the street from the hospital. They weren't blocking anything.
