The DNC has a much uglier history of racism. The conservative southern democratic movement - Dixiecrats - started in response to Republican Abraham Lincoln's emancipation. It was the better part of a century before a Republican again carried the south in a Presidential election. Parties change with generations but the ugly part of the Democratic party remains.
