Yea it will run great with everything on high (only shadows on low-medium). They added new "dynamic" shadows with wrath of the lich king expansion and they are quite a ressources hog on high details.

I already tried with a Athlon 64 x2 6400+ / 9600 GT

Problem is that most application that you use daily is not multitask, so only one core is loaded 100%, both together a bit over 50%. I think I like Intel for this better

Not for me, when i run some thing it will split it up evenly.

I use matlab 2007, it is math program and if I type somthing that needs to be calculated, cpu usage in task maneger goes to 50-60%, most used by this program, but cpu isn't loaded 100% none of the time I would say, very hard to do that on my comp, but if I scroll up and down in IE , youtube loaded it goes 100% easly. What do you think?

When i scroll up and down, have a calcualation going, playing 2 songs, a gaming benchmark and converting some video i get close to 100%

No I got dual core too, X2 4400+..."A 100% task for a single core is 50% per core on my dual core" this is what is happening, high single thread load loads cpu(looking power of both cores in %)to ~50% instead to 100% . Intels core 2 duo act as one cpu in any case, so them work on single or multi thread stuff almost at same speed.

well I do alot of 3d animation and when I turn the threads up to 8(maximum) it renders at .11 seconds for every frame in stead of the old 3 seconds a frame.

Those results are pretty impressive. The results for these processors aren't that far off the competition, which isn't bad considering the competition, is a generation ahead :) I think you'd do alright with 3DS Max on that rig, although the power consumption would worry me a bit as over here it's hot even late at night.

Yea Intel Core 2 Duo can have 2 x 2MiB L2 Cache instead of the 2 x 1MiB you have got. (Well, at least all the current Intel Macs has 2 x 2MiB L2 Cache.)

But when you compare the Opteron vs. Xeon, it is a little different... given same clock speed and L2 Cache, a 2 x Dual Core Opteron beats a 2 x Quad Core Xeon when running 4 threads... but the Xeon beats Opteron when running 8 threads because of its extra Cores...

The only way for you to get 3.3GHz is to overclock: 220MHz x 15.
