Shows like this Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons, Good Times was my only look into the life of African Americans as a kid. I grew up in a racist family and it pissed off my Grandfather to no end knowing my mother let me watch these sitcoms. Only imagine how he respond to half our family now being interracial. Old school did have its pitfalls. I have black Aunts, Uncles, Nephews, Nieces, cousins, brothers. All the more better too. Racism didn't only come from our side at first. Power of love :)
@Raven7176 Ha! I'm half Irish, half Black and my Irish grandma was one racist bitch. Even though I really believe she loved me, she was so rude and bigoted towards my mom, even though it was my dad, her Irish son, that ran out on us. But she actually helped my mom out, unlike my dad, because she was able to see clearly enough not to reject me. But I will never forgive her for the ways she treated my mom.
What a sad woman she was!! Anyway, stay strong! We're the future of America! And the world!
@Raven7176 now that you say that, i'm wondering, have there been any black/white couples or families on tv since helen & tom willis on "the jeffersons"? or have any tv sitcoms or dramas ever featured a couple consisting of a Black man paired with a white woman? i haven't watched much post-80s tv, but offhand i can't think of any examples.
I was just watching "Life After" on TV One about (Dr.) Danielle "Dee" Spencer. Unlike most child stars (back in the day), she went on to get an education, and is now a vet.
i loved watching this when i got home from school!!! and im hispanic back then we didnt see color we saw human beings coming together having fun !!! today all we have are idiots with thier nose up high...sad i miss the 80s
Love this shooww! It had to be like one of the funniest 70s show out there. Good Times, although a classic, was corny and Lamar on Sanford & Son irritated me lol. The other shows were good too, but this one is just the best!
I made a mix CD once, put a ton of Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and this song almost in the very back of the selected playlist. My girlfriend and I were getting "hot and heavy" one night, and right in the middle of it all, this song came on and my girlfriend just looked at me and said, "WHAT THE FUCK?" Thinking about doing the same thing with the Sesame Street theme.
The funniest episode I ever saw of "What's Happening" was when the L. A. Dream Team made an appearance on the show, and beforehand, Raj and Duane was trying to rap. Listening to Raj and Duane trying to rap was just too much!
i think ernest thomas had a small role on "roots." and mabel king was sometimes one of the judges on the "gong show." but i don't remember seeing any of the other "what's happening" actors on any other 70s tv shows. they were all very talented, so i'm not sure why they didn't get more roles.
@wallofvideo Danielle Spencer became a Vet. Haywood Nelson is a Computer Consultant. Ernest Thomas worked with Spike Lee on several of his Movies. Fred Berry, Mabel King, and Shirley Hemphill are all dead. Here's another fun fact. This show was based on a Movie called Cooley High that Steve Krantz produced in 1975 that was called The Black American Graffiti. Also, Steve's Wife is Romance Novelist Judith Krantz (Princess Daisy), and he had the chance to do Grease but changed his mind.
@wallofvideo Also, Cooley High Harmony was the name of The Debut Album by Boyz To Men and what I loved about this show was that it showed that there was a time where South Central LA was a safe Blue Collar Lower Middle Class Community.
Wouldnt the title have question marks instead of exclamation marks seeing that it is a question? XD Wish they would show the reruns, this was a cool show. =D
@SethMcFartlane that's just it nothing was happening. that was the beauty of thing's back then. i gues you had to be around to see what im talking about, they were awesome time's!!!
It's sort of weird seeing people being open to hitchhiking, let that happen today and it be on CNN, HLN, FOX, MSNBC, and other news network of some missing teenagers....guess things have changed.
I remember as a kid, my friends and I doing the basketball part of this on the sidewalk of my neighborhood. Why does adulthood have to suck so much compared to childhood?
This show was awesome! The cracks and putdowns by Dee & Shirley were HA larious! My favorite episode when the Doobie Brothers made a guest appearance and Rerun was trying to bootleg the show and got so excited he started dancin' and this big ol boombox fell out of his coat BUSTED!! But it all turned out ok by the end of the episode ...how come TV shows don't have tidy endings anymore???
Damn...this was the SHOW!!! If you grew up in the 70`s you had to love this....it`s funny how this was LA... and the Crips and Bloods was good and DEADLY right about this time...
This aired the same year I was born. Wow. Brings back memories of life when times were easier and simpler. Though it was mostly my family that watched it back then (because I was so young), brings back good memories. I bought the complete series Box Set of this. : )
