Just curious, what's your main objection to it? The lack of a fiddle and/or the way it's sung? I must confess that I had never conceived of this song before without a fiddle but this version seems alright but not traditional, as you say.

I'm a member of the Scouts, and this song is translated (except the chorus) in german.

It's one of my favorite songs. In german it calls "Julisonnenschein". I love this song ;-)

Eines Morgens ging ich so für mich hin, im Julisonnenschein den Wiesenpfad, den Hang hinab kam ein schönes Mägdelein. Und sie lacht mich an und ich freu mich dran und bewundre ihr nussbraunes Haar. Einer lockenden Fee kam ich kaum in die Näh', ganz verwirrt von dem nussbraunen Haar.
