Metallo is a good character for Batman and Superman to face together. He's badass enough to be a real problem for Batman (essentially a super-Terminator) but he's only a physical threat to Superman because of his krypronite power-source, which doesn't bother Batman at all, obviously. They actually need each other to defeat him.

The thing about that is that Superman has only one weakness, so the writers have to somehow squeeze kryptonite into almost every story just to give him a challenge. Batman is only human so it allows the writers more versatility.

Being robin means you are expendable.

I think that Superman and Batman are best suited for their own problems. Superman has to deal with super powered aliens and Luthor, who he has a problem dealing with since Superman is a moral symbol and can't touch him as long as Luthor has good publicity. Batman has to deal with insane criminals and criminals with resources and intelligence. He needs to be a detective and be able to use his assets. Even if you switch their roles they have their own methods of dealing with a problem.
