  • Back when mtv and VH1 played good music. Now they dont even play music at all

  • This is an awesome performance. Their so tight, sounds near identical to the album.

I have this version recorded on VCR in 1997 from MTV!!!!!

  • This version should have been on the new live album...

  • MY FAVE SOUNDGARDEN SONG!!!! EPIC!!!!

  • Soundgarden wins!!! I am so glad I grew up in the early 90s listening to these guys along with other greats like Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam. I get nostalgic listening to this. I was in 7th grade when down on the upside came out. I remember waiting for that release.

  • Ben is playing a bass he gave to me 14 years ago.

    a treasured possession,

    and a mighty song

  • @brettalexander1968 That kicks ass, dudebro!

  • Just a morning "ritual' for me! Coffee and alittle "Burden in my Hand" and off we go! Great song from a great man,,, Thanks Chris!

  • Immense.

  • @TFP2001 should have started about 16 years before then

  • Very different from the studio version.

  • @MangoSmoothie16 That's one of the reason's why Soundgarden are so damn good! not afraid to mix shit up live!

  • why why why was i born to this generation of pop loving crap :(

    love this song

  • @dmguitarman how old are you?

just close ups ? wtf !!!!

  • @KutaniCrane It's MTV what do you expect.

  • @TFP2001 me too...and it was almost 2 weeks ago :)

  • ♥ ♥ ♥ Soundgarden ♥ ♥ ♥

  • I can understand that mainstream pop bands get more views than this...I mean, not that Soundgarden isn't "Mainstream", but I'm talking about crap like Lil Wayne and and that chick that reminds me of Marilyn Manson that sang with Beyonce or wtf ever. The question is, why? Does anyone know why people have such bad taste it music nowadays? Someone help me here.

  • @TheWolfpack666 wish i could... :/ some ppl just don't know what's good for them. just be thankful you have the intelligence to appreciate this real music. :)

  • @TheWolfpack666 Majority of the people today have bad taste becuz most of them just want to be entertain they like that eye candy pop shit, They dont want to think or listen on what a true musician or real talent basically style, sex, gansgter bullshit hip hop sell.. Todays society is all about way over self indulgent, narssistic too much vanity..

  • @crs78 Yeah, people suck...

  • @crs78 Sorry, but have you forgotten the 80's existed? Hair metal was just a bad, if not worse. At least now, White people don't have to associate with shitty music as much, seeing as its all "niggas n gangstas". And besides, good music was always there and still is, and you always had to look for it. Now, we've got incredible bands like the Deftones, Queens of the Stone Age, the White Stripes, Radiohead, The Prodigy, System of a Down, the list goes on.

  • @ktrel54 To further prove my point, I could name a whole lot more bands that aren't on "Major Labels", that you wouldn't know of. If you so desire, I'll give you a list, but there are too many to name here. Some people seem to get down on the fact that nothing's surpassed what Seattle was in the early nineties, but they neglect to realise that it was only a four year period, and how often does an explosion of music like that occur.

  • @crs78 dude, fuck that ktrel54 fool, what he's talking about is irrellivent anyway. i totally agree with you man, music and society has turned into a bunch of money hungry bogarts who think they're the coolest shit on the planet. FTW LETS JUST GET HIGH MOTHAFUCKIZ xD

  • Led Zeppelin a little

  • sweet lord @Anonymousx89 i hope you are joking....because if you arent you are either 12 years old or do not appreciate 90's rock. Chris Cornell was the lead singer for Soundgarden THEN Audioslave...and Soundgarden kicks the everloving SHIT out of Audioslave

  • long live Soundgarden, long live Grunge

  • who is this faggot ripping off audioslave? they sound like them only not as good. try being original u dickwad.

  • @Anonymousx89 uh...dude this is the SAME singer from audioslave, so that would be why they sound similar.lol and btw, Soundgarden are FAR BETTER than Audioslave. They also came out like 15 years before audioslave did.

  • @Anonymousx89 Don't get mad at me! Just tell me this one thing... were you serious when you wrote that comment or joking?

  • @Anonymousx89 Wow...no comment!

  • @Anonymousx89 This is why you are Anonymous isn't it? Comments like that!!

  • @Anonymousx89 fail to u my friend, Chris Cornell is vocalist for both!

  • Kim has a guitar similar with the great Angus Young from AC/DC...Soundgarden and AC/DC rules forever

  • @Andymalcolm1 kim has a guild and angus uses gibsons

  • Epic songs like these.... Make me forget about my troubles for just a moment

  • "Close your eyes & bow your head, I need a little sympathy....."

  • @TFP2001 same here, but it was 14 yrs ago.

  • the best song.....and I dont say that alot....this is number 1 for me.......I shot my love today would you cry for me......I lost my head again would you lie for me.....Left her in the sand just a burden in my hand.......Hell Yeah.....number 1

  • I wonder *maybe* if SG got a little TOO dark, back in the day?

Whatever...I'm glad they are back - hope they are having fun with it all . . .

  • I can't get enough of this fuckin song for some reason. It's perfect. You know when you find a girl or guy that is like your perfect match. This is that song to me, pieces fit perfect to me as almost an extension of my body or soul. Except I would take Soundgarden over a bitch any day of the week. I fucking love this band!

  • @zb1984 you nailed exactly how i feel about this song! i came on here to see what other people thought about it... this song shapes/wakes something in me, i'm trying not to sound cheesy =P but it's true. Just amazing

  • @zb1984 nicely said my man it does sumthin whatever it is inside u.....and soundgarden will always be there for u and not dick u over like the bitches

  • Chris Cornell is a genius and Soundgarden is awesome!!!!!!

  • Now we're talking!!

  • omg fucking chris cornell is amazing

  • @JaviVS i bet it would be : P

  • @beAVENeasy I agree AIC was unique in their own right however, many have the ability to duplicate their sound. Days Of The New, Godsmack, Tantric, Taproot, etc. No one has had the ability to duplicate Soundgarden. The closest to it would be a band called Big Wreck.

  • I'll give that 2 you man...good point

  • Check out Der Hunds, man... no, not a Soundgarden duplicate, but damn it's pretty amazing the quality they're capable of. They got covers of... Outshined, JCP, Slaves and Bulldozers, Mailman...and more, I'm pretty sure. Definitely worth looking into.

  • Gosh they were SO ahead of their time

and I personally would like to attribute it mainly to Cornell

    But I dont't know really . . .

  • he really wasn't a very good singer live by this point...he sounds amazing on all of his album recordings but it seems like a lot of his notes are flat. and honestly i think that Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, and there bassist (ben something? i don't know) were better musicians than he was.

  • @alexsouthey dude you need to stick to something other than talking about music cuz you don't know what your talking about

  • what the hell ever dude, he sounds amazing in this clip. sure, he had lost his super high upper register, but he still sounded powerful and his control was great. this is not an easy tune to sing, and he does it with ease in this performance. he isnt singing any flatter than he did in the early days. And btw, that is bullshit about the rest of the guys being better musicians. Chris wrote 90 percent of all of soundgarden's songs and riffs. and probably almost 100 percent of their lyrics.

  • I've also noticed that when Chris is singing and not playing an instrument he is much better.

  • Soundgarden as a unit were much more talented than AIC. I love AIC and will even say they're vocally more sound live but, toe to toe as a whole as musicians? Soundgarden wins that one. Not to mention more unique.

  • @cebrin I definatley agree with you there. Also Soundgarden basically created its own genre, while AIC took generic metal and made it more melodic (for lack of a better word) and lyrically meaningful.

  • @cebrin thats a coin toss both ways talented maybe...but unique...nobody's like AIC....and im a big soundgarden fan...but nobody's like them either...thats a good argument question

  • Love this band...this song is a true rock masterpiece

  • guys, there s a new music god out there and he is canadian, Devin Townsend is his name or should I say Heavy Devy! Alice in Chains best american band, Opeth best europe band

    . Tool is dead.

  • Yeah...Devin Townsend is better than Tool. That is the smartest thing I've heard all day. Also...Sid Vicious was also a better bassist than Les Claypool.

  • Yeah, yeah, yeah!!! REUNION. Hopefully not as actually announced only for a few gigs. Must be so boring to play with Timbaland. Only to make some tons of money without any creativity. Must be more amazing to play with the Soundgarden crew again!!! Of course.

  • will u wish for me to win tje lottery plz???? :D

  • That's my all time favourite and I really hope that sometimes my wish comes true and there's a re-union of these guys. Especcially Chris and Kim. What a symboisis!!!!!

  • soo perfect...

  • his voice is just...amazing

  • way better live

  • Chris is as amazing live as he is on a cd

  • I would say ... Chris WAS amazing live as he is on a cd ;)

  • @vegasrobert1 The real power of a great vocalist is to make live performances even better than cd ones.

I think Chris Cornell has that real power, he's great

  • I just think people who get on youtube and criticize artist are just a bunch of fucking haters who just talk shit, man i am honestly tired of having to look these well respected good musicians and have to deal with the dumb fucking ignorant comments pricks leave after their videos... !!!!! Fucking little kids....!!

  • I agree...

Unless it's Brittney Vs. Soundgarden lol

  • @tony2diablo The amazing thing is the comments are below the video.... if you don't want to read them you don't have to!

  • Maynard couldn't take from Cornell's fromunda cheese!!

  • One of the best is more appropriate

  • It's all an opinion dude.....no one cares.....I think Cornell is the best of all time......but then Myles Kennedy is pretty bad ass too......Layne Staley wasn't bad either....truth is they are all unique in their own way and the best.......it's like comparing oranges to apples.....

  • @funlivelife haha I think all of those 3 singers are awesome! Although it seems Myles isn´t so great live :p

  • Soundgarden was the band that actually changed my musical views, i never listened to music the same way again since. Truly a great band!!

  • And i hope no one every takes Chris' voice for granted. This song in particular and especially on the album was vocally ridiculous. And he still has it just that his hearts no tin it anymore and he put a lot vocally into his songs when he was in his prime. I'm sorry but in his prime nobody on the scene could touch his voice. just amazing vocal ability.

  • agreed - the best rock voice ever. not anymore though

  • Favorite Soundgarden song hands down was when it came out and still will be. Always thought they should be measured by this, not that they didn't have other great songs. Just a fucking amazing song. They were always so good live too. Man i miss them along with the 90's but the music does and will always live on.

  • Was a grungehead back then. One of the best songs of that era.

  • when in the fucking hell they will reunite

  • Sweet oh so sweet... Glad I saw them back in the day...never forget!...

  • to much reverb/delay, but soundgarden as always

  • Stunning! Man, I wish I'd seen this band live. Great post, thanks.

  • being a tennager in the 90's must have been amazing,......... ..

  • Being a teen in the 90s was kind of weird (as a girl, at least). I was too young to appreciate great music like this. I definitely appreciate it now, though.

  • Not really. A lot of disillusionment with things then and of things to come.... (Maybe like the coming of the present day emo music hehe).

But at least there was music like this that we could escape to...

  • i love this fucking version !

  • il meglio del meglio

  • Gotta join in!

Tool was heavily influenced and inspired by Soundgarden.

I love Tool. More so than SG and AS, but they are all badass. SG's bass player is super awesome. I think criticizing someone who plays a guitar (bass) with a pick is just kinda silly (sorry guys).

Chris Cornell and Maynard are both legends, and they both suffer to reproduce studio on stage. Their lines are ultra demanding.

Danny Carry is unrivaled IMO. Love em all!

    Be peaceful on your way,

    Time_Spiraling

  • Jakspeed,

If we're going to clarify the record, then let's do it. These are not entirely my words.

"Tool was heavily influenced and inspired by Soundgarden"

I read that information in an interview with the members of Tool. If i remember correctly, Adam Jones was talking specifically about how influential Soundgarden was to them.

Maybe Mr. Jones needs Jak here to update him on the time line of these two bands' existences?

    lol, ;)

    Be confident on your way,

    Time_Spiraling

  • Unfortunately, you're wrong. Maynard and Danny Carey were both in the band Green Jelly back in '90-92 before meeting Adam Jones and forming Tool, Soundgarden has been making LP's since at least '87.

    Just for the record.

  • No. Tool formed in 1990, a full six years after Soundgarden. Which makes soundgarden first by a long shot.

  • Just curious, but have Tool actually listed Soundgarden as an influence? I'd like to read that interview if you know where I can find it.

  • fuck that sounds bad live ..... like the song on the album but that sucks

  • genially simple

  • Now...from a musical complexity standpoint, I'd go with Tool. Long, textured musical masterpieces with weird time signatures and tempo changes. I mean any band that is capable of incorporating mathematical theories into their music (Lateralus' vocals are set to a Fibonacci sequence; Black (1) then (1) white are (2) all I see (3) in my infancy (5) red and yellow then came to be (8) reaching out to me (5) let's me see (3). That's fucking brilliant. For the most part SG is 4/4 rock with cool guitar

  • You think? I agree that Justin does have that heavier, chugging bass sound...but I'm just biased against bassists that play with a pick. I know that the bass sound in Tool is what makes them sound unique and they couldn't attain that sound if he didn't play with one. But a lot of people underrate Ben's ability because the guitars in SG are so much more at the forefront. Still, you are correct that Shepherd never did anything close to the bass riffs in 46&2, Schism or The Pot. So yes...Chancellor

  • yea tool has an excellent mix, all four members shine equally. I guess we'll never know what Ben was made of since his parts were mixed down so much.

  • soundgarden has a lot of odd time stuff. limo wreck, my wave, day i tried to live, outshined, spoonman, zero chance and tons of other songs. sure they arent quite as epic, but they also use alternate tunings on almost everysong. with tool just about everything is in drop-d. everyone knows tool is crazy, but i think people underrate SG's musical ability. Either way both are in my top 5 favorite bands ever.

  • Yeah, yer right. Jesus Christ Pose and Rusty Cage are a little strange from a structural standpoint as well. Time signatures may even be standard but I think they re arranged a little weird. The tunings are way more odd than Tool as well. Do not get me wrong. Tool and SG are my number 2 and 3 favorite bands respectively (with Primus at number 1 by a very slim margin). I think maybe the 10-minute songs by Tool just make them seem so much more epic. Doesnt make it so, I guess. SG was cool fo sho.

  • yea dude primus is so underrated. But yea tool is in their own realm...Lateralus is like the most epic album of all time.

  • Depends on what you're talking about. Danny Carey as a drummer blows Matt Cameron out of the water...and Matt Cameron is still very good. From a guitar standpoint, I'd give the edge to SG. Adam Jones is good and is capable of playing anything Thayil/Cornell can; but he plays within the framework of Tool's music. Bass...I'd say about even. Vocals, I give a slight edge to Maynard just because Cornell can't hit the notes he used to be able to...saw him in 2005 with Awfulslave and he's lost a bit.

  • Adam can't handle Thayil's solos. He admits that he is not that good when it comes to scales and speed. Justin admits the same. In terms of the music they create I'd hold the two guitarists equal, but Chancellor is a waayyyyyy bigger badass than Ben Shepherd.
