Glenn Campbell sings this better than anyone that has recorded it. (my opinion), but great writing...Thanks Johnny. Did you write any of the other songs that Glen recorded? I loved his style of singing back in the 70's.
I never knew about Johnny even though he lived in the Lebanon, Tennessee area during the latter part of his life. I recently had the good fortune of purchasing the D-18 as well as his Case/Capo and tuner that he used on the road.....I learned about this song from his wife.....and set about to learn the words and music......Awesome talent, only a few have the ability that he had....He is missed!

I don't know whether I'm more moved by the beauty of this song, the talented rendition by its composer, or the thought that he passed away less than a week after this performance.
I nearly died of a heart attack myself a year and a half ago, and have learned to follow that heart and do what I think is most important in this-my second chance at enjoying life.
One of my new practices is watching videos like this so I can reflect upon the beauty of living, and this is one of my favorites.
Didn't know he wrote this until I just watched Al Martino's version. He was a good singer but a better writer. Al Martino's cover of this song will be remembered along with Blue Spanish Eye's. Al Martion passed away 10/13/09. RIP Al. You gave us some great memories. Especially of my Mary!!
JC was such a great songwriter. New CDs of songs he wrote in the 70s/80s came out, called "Some Songs I Left Behind (Volume 1 and 2)" is out - check iTunes for it - he wrote GREAT songs.
I had no idea, that is til now, that Johnny Cymbal of "MR. BASS MAN" fame actually sang ALL the different vocal parts to that early `60's classic! ... Nor, that he was the words & music writer of this beautiful tender melody. The lad was truly gifted, God bless him...
I remember what I did on the 16th of March in the morning: I got out of bed and put on the song "14 years" by Guns N' Roses. It was my 14th birthday...
I thought it was great. I did read the interview with Lisa Marie Presley in Playboy where she said it was one of the top 4 favorite songs ELVIS use to sing around the house!
@lowlights Not every songwriter can do justice to a great song that they wrote. A prime example is the song "City of New Orleans" by the late Steve Goodman. While I also enjoy his performance of it, Arlo Guthrie really did it justice. I get choked up every time I hear Arlo sing it. Having said that, Johnny Cymbal did this beautiful love song justice as well as a few other recording artists. I'm grateful that he wrote it as it is one of my all-time favorites.
Al Martino's version is the BEST......it was his record that made this song popular. Johnny should have acknowledged that.

I find JC's version more heartfelt if less polished than Al Martino's. And as usual THE KING rules.

Johnny Cymbal did not sing all of the parts on Mr. Bass Man... the bass was sung by Ronnie Bright of the Cadillacs.

Johnny Cymbal died of a heart attack on March 16, 1993, just 5 days after this video was recorded. He was just 48 years old.

Haven't heard Al Martino's version; but I think there is something special about seeing the songwriter sing their own song (if they have a voice!).
