@Svante 7800 was released before the Genesis. Also, it's not like stores were carrying the Mega Drive. They carried the Genesis. Don't go getting all anachronistic assuming it was that easy back then to just place an order for a Mega Drive.
Dude, I KNOW the Atari was released before the Genesis, but by 1990, no kid would want THAT compared to the Genesis. This was just a lame excuse to get rid of the remaining unsold stock of the 7800 which basically was a flop compared to the golden days of the 2600 (which I still use and love). The Genesis and Mega Drive is the same machine, and it was avalible EVERYWHERE they sold video games back in 1990, as it was the latest thing back then. Wasn´t hard to find ;)
@Svante I'm pretty sure, back then, you could not get Mega Drive in the states. If it was sold somewhere I think that store wouldn't have been on the "up and up" - legally. I grew up during those years. Back when Atari had their magazine that had an evil character named "NinJendo" which was this asian looking bad guy, that was supposed to represent "nintendo".
@jorgekluney Actually, the Genesis (Mega Drive) was released on August 14, 1989 in New York and L.A., and in the rest av the States on September 15, 1989. More info about the US release on Wikipedia, etc.
Maybe you misunderstood me a little bit. I didn´t mean that the Euro/Japanese version of the console under the name Mega Drive was avalible in the states in 1990, but the US model with the name Genesis was.
The Atari 7800 had a fairly good game library, sold fairly well, made a profit, and is now fairly collectable. It wasn't a bad system, just an remarkable one, with mostly good games but no real "killer app", though having 2600 backwards compatibility makes it desirable for some retro gamers as it ends up being "two systems in one". That said, this commercial is utterly terrible in every way, which just makes me love it more!
@cyric2010 I was a Master System kid as well, while most of my friends had a NES. That does sound like an Aussie trying to do an American accent at the end. LOL!
@Watcher3223 ugh yeah that could be. Seriously though this commercial doesn't make me want to have an Atari 7800. It tells me that kids were high in the 80's. lol
Me, neither. You're correct about how kids dancing around wouldn't convince anyone to buy this. Especially when we consider that the Sega Genesis was already out and the Super Nintendo wasn't far off in 1990.
The real irony: once shooting was wrapped up, those kids went home to play their video games .... on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Although, admittedly, I grew up with Nintendo and Commodore. However, I did obtain a 7800 ProSystem and recently finished an A/V output modification on it.
There was an Atari 7800 commercial in 1990??? Who were THEY fooling! By 1990 Sega Genesis & the Turbo-Grafx 16 was out. Hell, the Neo-Geo was out by 1990 if I remember right. Nobody was buying this old shit in 1986 much less 1990! And then this weak commercial! Hahahahahaha!! Poor Atari. They just couldn't get it right after the crash.
@TheAtariJunkie You do realise that Mario is in this Commercial, right? I agree no one wanted that peice of shit 7800 tho, I was quite happy with my 2600.

I remember this ad and song perfectly from over 20 years ago. wow. I was a Sega Master Sysem kid too, not Atari :D
Was this an Aussie only ad?
The voice over at the end sounds like an Aussie guy trying to do an American accent. lol

The only thing the Atari 7800 had going for it was it was cheaper than the NES, other than that it sucked hard.
