When I worked for TWA in Omaha back in the mid to late 90's, one landed, and I got to inspect it close up. Big is an understatement. A mechanic worked with us as well, and he noticed how the nuts were not safety wired. The tires were all chewed up on the rear as well from having to make tight turns and some had to slide sideways.

Apparently in the money crazy late 80's a few rich investors planned on converting An225's into flying Casino's. It's pretty ironic considering it was designed in a country the whole idea of gambling for money was considered thuggish and for organized criminals. Well, in all fairness it was in the West too.

I think the only reason they designed this is because it was meant to carry the Russian space shuttle on its back, and the cargo hold would be used for whatever reason.
