Do you think the 6000's were taken out of service because they wore out, or more because of the fact they weren't air conditioned and the doors wouldn't take wheelchairs? I do wish, regardless, the CTA had kept a couple, like they did the 4000's.
2:16 -- You must've recorded this in the early 80's. I notice the 2000's in this vid. They were still in the process of being reassigned to the North-South route from the Lake/Dan Ryan (West-South) route at the time.
Having to relive the old uptown and lakeview neighborhoods from 20+ years ago, its a crazy feeling to see what was life all the way back then. Thanks for sharing this!
The 6000's were much better cars than we knew at the time. They performed much better than they could ever have expected too, for bunch of converted streetcars. We called them Spam Cans. They did so very well
I was the last regular service revenue 6000 series rider. At the end of the last run, we got to Kimball & Lawrence, and the conductor literally told me to leave the train as it was going to the yards-only CTA employees were left on board at that time!
THANK YOU... MY MEMORIES ARE JUST VIVID...

I would have like to have L's in Milwaukee. I did get to ride the North Shore from Milw to Chi in the 50's.

My first el was B Train, and A trains on the Laramie stop as a kid. IT's now Douglas/54/Pink, and Congress/A/Forest Park now.

As I recall, these were among the first cars to eliminate the PCC laminated wheels. The noise and ride were never the same after.
This vid seems to show the 6000's before this awful mode, that sadly Kenosha has made as well.
The cars have a dreadful rumble in real life that is just not a captured hear.
MICE vid, tho. Keep 'em coming here, please, and include full sound.
