I think the Russians are full of shit. They lost in Afghanistan and got full of shit for it, so they are just trying to make themselves feel better by discrediting us the WEST (not Russia). They were doing worst than us, at least we are making progress against the insurgents and not turning the country upside down by murdering the afghan president and then moving their forces into Afghanistan. Look up Wikipedia of the Russian campaign and compare that to ISAF.

Actually most of the volunteers in the US army are of the Jessica Lynch type - they see the military as a way to get out of "dire" social situations, to advance their station in life. Some need it to get to colledge, some use it to get positions with the police (colledge credits are not needed if there is military service) etc. The soldiers that serve in it for old glory are rather sparse, there is not too many of them.

I do not doubt there are other possibilities, but this is a combination of career and assured paid for education if you survive.

F-22 is a air superiority fighter, while F-35 is more of a support jet. They won't phase out the raptor unless they make a new fighter.
