This video was part of the Mexican television network Televisa during its broadcast of Barcelona 1992 Closing Ceremonies. The voice can your hear is Jacobo Zabludovsky.
Very poor presentation. Starts off with some dance that seems rather Spanish, before going off into some weak 90's street dance before the sperm in sneakers comes on having no clue where he was.
Poor representation of dance cultures in America. I would have had some tie with the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' discovery of the Americas.
Intro Video.
A mockup of the Santa Maria moving around the stadium field. Maybe referencing one of the similar segments from the Opening Ceremony?
Once landing on "stage" we have a Christopher Columbus type character inviting people to attend the Centennial Games in 1996.
Then it's the whole dance routine. Scrap the mascot introduction.
the intro was artsy like the Barcelona games had been.... then it turned into a hip hop American preformance. (oh and people, it's not tacky cause its the yanks, it cause it was the 90s)
It's so amazing to see the late Great Gregg Burge leading these dancers (from 240 thru 322 and from 415 thru 600) with his own choreography. What an awesome talent. RIP sweet Gregg.
This was pretty lame, IMO. And when they trotted out that thing they called a mascot, I was thinking...oh, shit. They couldn't do any better than this?? I hope the Games themselves are better.
Pretty, pretty bad. Not as bad as a London bus, but still. They should have just played the burning of Atlanta scene from Gone With the Wind. At least it would have some connection to the city.
They should've done something that had to do with the USA. This piece of crap isn't American, it's generic. They could've done something like a nod to rural America or something remotely American. I hope the next US city that gets the Games realizes that.
The handover to Atlanta was just terrible, what they were thinking?. I'm glad they did a better job latter with the handover to Salt Lake 2002 at the Nagano closing.
Hi from MX. This file is from Televisa original broadcast for Barcelona 1992 Closing Ceremonies and the voice is from Jacobo Zabludovsky a milestone in the mexican media (like Walter Cronkite rest in pace)...
By the way ¿the music of the Atlanta introduction was composed by John Tesh? I noted some thing typical from him and his music works.

Sorry I almost fell asleep watching this! It's truly dire!! Sydney and Athens handovers were MUCH better! You could tell, even 4 years before, just what a corprate run games Atlanta 96 turn out to be, and so it was proved. :(
I have the plush for the original design of Izzy ( or "Whatizit", as he was), minus a couple of rings ( I got him second-hand). Let me just say, he looked better with two rows of teeth and no nose.
ok, the reason that they did not parade the southern belles around and make a big production out of the civil war is because of they were trying to usher a in a more "modern" games. The announce said that they wanted to share the olympic spirit, not tell the story of the city, that i think that they could have done in the mascot. Izzy was weak. But i thought that the presentation did what the entire Atlanta Olympic movement was supposed to do, and that was show Atlanta as a modern city.
i have to agree with a lot of comments here. this doesn't show anything about the U.S. nor the Southeastern part of the country which is very rich in culture.
Yeah, I agree. They should've done stuff relating to the Civil War and how Georgia and the American South overcame it and stuff relating to the thousands of trees that make the state of Georgia awesome.
Well, that's how "Americans" see themselves, but this is an international ceremony so only a few people from another country, specially spanish-spoken people, know about the Civil was and such 'cause they dont teach you "American History at school, so they have to do something that people around the world could undestand, and USA Tap Dancers are well known by other contries more than the "Civil war"....
Wow that really sucked! Atlanta gave good games but this was bad, no sense of belonging with an specific cultural background..the centennial games should've been in Athens but they where ok.
This is boring indeed. They should have done the welcome to the world segment in the Atlanta OC for the introduction with the Bands, Cheerleaders, and Choir. I think that would have captured Atlanta perfectly and got everyone excited for 1996 rather than that twirling or whatever that is their doing.
Everybody knows Atlanta shouldn't have hosted those games....And I'am sorry to say that, but they were celebrating the 100th Anniversay of the Games (first ones in our era were in 1896), and they didn't reach the level.... Barcelona, Sydney or Athens are far better....
This is a very boring presentation. You wouldn't even know what the entire thing was for except in some parts. The next time the USA would make another presentation, it could help if they try Native American culture. We're too familiar with mainstream American culture and something different should be done.
lasthurrah00 you are right. i am part native american and i was very happy with the native american representation at the 2002 Olympics. ike74ph, lets know the facts next time okay?
The Atlanta Games were one of the greatest. US stars included Michael Johnson, Kerri Strug, Andre Agassi, and Lindsay Davenport. Carl Lewis would win his 9th, and the last, gold medal in these (Atlanta) Games. International stars included Donovan Bailey (CAN), Haile Gebreselassie (ETH, defended his title in Sydney 2000), and Alexander Popov (RUS).
Woah! That's a good segment. I also suggest that you could also upload the Olympic flag handover segment from the mayor of Barcelona to the mayor of Atlanta. Plus the raising of the flags of Barcelona & Catalonia, Greece, Spain, and the USA.
