Cenk is over stating the "crazy" side of the analysts position. The analyst is differentiating between "if" the solider is desserting or "if" he was truly captured. We americans are "shocked" by death in war and are our own worst enemies when it comes to situations like this. I have two sons, it would be a lost to me to lose them by any means. Firstly, 'collaborating' under duress is no collaboration at all. This is accepted legally and morally and was shown famously during the first Gulf War when the two British airmen who had been captured by the Iraqi regime were shown on camera saying how wrong 'they' thought the war was. As for deserting, well until he is debriefed we don't know the circumstances around that desertion. It may not be desertion; it may be desertion but because of a psychological problem, say post-traumatic stress

Well i have stood post many a time, many a year and i was blessed to serve with patriots of a similiar caliber, no throwing our hands up and saying "we quit" and wandering out into the countryside of afghanistan/iraq. the military has ways that cowards/unfit military personnel can get out of their service contract, its not honorable but there are ways, no desertion in a war zone necessary. This dude made a mistake and life is harsh, actions have consequences, may he be lucky.

Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice the penalty for desertion in a time of war is death. Col Peters seems to have pulled it out way too soon. However, as tough hearted as it may sound as a Colonel on this issue he is factually on the money. The circumstances of his departure from his unit must be better understood, however. I think Mr. Peters jumped the gun by leading into punishment before official word. Very few die for desertion, but all are taught the penalty by military requirement.
Peters should be tried for treason and imprisoned for the rest of his life. We CANNOT have U.S. military officers saying this about a captured soldier. We have to get him home. Then and only then should we investigate whether or not he went awol. If he is guilty of a crime, then WE should punish him under the guidelines if the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

It sucks that a soldier was captured. But if he did desert that is treason, which was once punishable by death. If he captured while on duty I say send in special forces and rescue him so the analyst can look him in the eye and say what he said. He should not be scratched off the list though simply because he made a mistake. No matter how large a mistake. He is proven to have deserted. He walked off base. We had a couple deserters in our unit and we went to Iraq and got smashed. When we came back home we wrote them off and they live miserable lives of shame now...DUI's drinking problems....the shame lives on forever.

don't expect us to launch dangerous raids where soldier's lives are put at risk trying to save him. Recently in Afghanistan, a journalist was told by the military NOT to go to the scene where the Military had bombed a captured fuel tanker taken from a coalition convoy ...he went anyway and was captured and his American citizen translator killed and in the rescue operation to save him, a Royal Marine was killed. This won't happen with Berghdahl. His fate is in THEIR hands now. He's like JW Lindh

That's not what I expect, I realize that. I'm not some dumb know-nothing civilian who has no concept on how wars are fought, I realize that having forces move and save him could result in many deaths, and if he deserted it would be hard to justify.

Cenk is over stating the "crazy" side of the analysts position. The analyst is differentiating between "if" the solider is desserting or "if" he was truly captured. We americans are "shocked" by death in war and are our own worst enemies when it comes to situations like this. I have two sons, it would be a lost to me to lose them by any means. But if they voluntarily signed up for the military and a war broke out and they were lost, I would NOT be dumbounded. THAT is "crazy".

Firstly, 'collaborating' under duress is no collaboration at all. This is accepted legally and morally and was shown famously during the first Gulf War when the two British airmen who had been captured by the Iraqi regime were shown on camera saying how wrong 'they' thought the war was. As for deserting, well until he is debriefed we don't know the circumstances around that desertion. It may not be desertion; it may be desertion but because of a psychological problem, say post-traumatic stress

Well i have stood post many a time, many a year and i was blessed to serve with patriots of a similiar caliber, no throwing our hands up and saying "we quit" and wandering out into the countryside of afghanistan/iraq. the military has ways that cowards/unfit military personnel can get out of their service contract, its not honorable but there are ways, no desertion in a war zone necessary. This dude made a mistake and life is harsh, actions have consequences, may he be lucky.

Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice the penalty for desertion in a time of war is death. Col Peters seems to have pulled it out way too soon. However, as tough hearted as it may sound as a Colonel on this issue he is factually on the money. The circumstances of his departure from his unit must be better understood, however. I think Mr. Peters jumped the gun by leading into punishment before official word. Very few die for desertion, but all are taught the penalty by military requirement.

Then and only then should we investigate whether or not he went awol. If he is guilty of a crime, then WE should punish him under the guidelines if the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
