The benefit of getting a well known person to write you a letter is that it makes your application stand out. That's really important for when someone one on the admissions board is looking at the hundredth application for that day. It will make them remember you and at least subconsciously improve their opinion of you.
@meggaiwa well if u watch the whole hour from the start then u will understand what i was saying....there was a girl studying europian politics in europe and ANA was talking about her and got her course wrong every time she mentioned her
I had a 3.9, 1230 SAT, took difficult classes, and was committed to few extracurriculars, and excelled at each activity I was involved in. A girl I knew had a 4.0, 1130 SAT, and was involved in every extra curricular activity available (stretching herself thin), and took pretty easy classes. She got into Brown. I didn't. Why? She knew the State Senator and I did not. So, yes, it can matter if a famous or important person knows you.
lol...AP classes are the reason my GPA wasn't lower. I tend to not try at all (i.e. do any homework) when I'm not challenged. If it wasn't for tests, I probably would have gotten Cs or Ds in half of my HS classes. Since I found AP classes more challenging, I almost always got As or high Bs in them.
government pays for your entire college as long as it takes you less than 5 years (college takes 4 so you got 1 repeat year) and you can choose which ever college you like and which ever subjects you like and no extra this or whatever.. I just went to school never did anything special and I am getting bachelors of ICT now.
@lordblazer You mean work and study or do two study's
if you mean 2 study's you only have to pay for one but I don't think you get money so you will need to pay around 1500 euros each year
if you mean work and study I also don't think you get the money but your work would often pay for your school and you would get money as salary as well.
@buugiman78 I thought that was kind of odd too. But it's probably a lot easier for a European since you grow up in that culture, hear names of kings and random bits of history in conversation. Americans mostly learn about American history (all 400 years of it) and don't have a lot of exposure to European events, so it's a little harder to keep straight.
Heres a strategy I saw a bunch of people using: citing their Mexican great-aunt-once removed as the reason they should qualify for minority scholarships.
I would say, and this at least for graduate school, having a letter of recommendation from someone who is very influential in the field that you're applying to does help a lot.
I applied for OSU 9in oklahoma) when I was in Highschool, and for computer engineering, I had to write an essay before I was admitted, but I never enrolled. In fact went to OU instead, and had a much better time. OSU is a bit racist not the institution as much as the location of Stillwater. I have a few friends who said its very conformist area. But I spent 3 years out of 5 of my undergraduate overseas. Earned two degrees. Sooo I definitely enjoyed college.
@TheBigBear41 I love being an engineering major!! EE majors rock! we get to have fun building circuits and programming. no long essays and books to read!
I hate to say this, but I didn't have to worry about the admission process and whether or not I was going to be accepted because my school (University of Texas) automatically accepts students who were in the top 10% of their high school class.
robot??? you mean people who do well in technical / scientific courses dont know how to think or write. in high school i had an A in English every year, studied math in university (my math martkls were A+). some marginal students in high school went on to study english or other arts courses. its not that they were good in english it was they weren;t good in these other subjects and englih / arts was the only choice other than working checkout (though some did that after graduating)
Student loan debt is the fastest growing debt in the country. The government is fucking college students in the ass, and this debt is non-bankruptable. It's insane how much college costs now, especially for graduate or professional school.
I am going to work in Japan for a year, and save up atleast 20k so I can do graduate school in Norway, and I will have the funds to show that I can live there without assistance. I will only pay 68 euros per semester. its basically tuition free. Wanna study International Environment and Energy Law. It's the next hot field to go into. especially as the ice caps melt, and exploration for oil expands. global warming is my life saver possibly. If I can survive a 9.0 earthquake I'm good
I completely disagree with the hard classes versus high GPA comment. Almost every scholarship requires a certain class rank or GPA to apply. So if you "challenge" yourself and get a C in an AP class, it is worse than getting an A in the regular in those cases. A 4.0 isn't the most important thing, but a higher GPA (and class rank) is important in the grand scheme of things.
I had very little strategy when applying to schools (as far as "safety" and "reach" schools were concerned). I was just like...oh this school accepts the common app and so does this one and so does this one, etc...and I referred to the Princeton Review and student review sites quite often. It all worked out in the end. I also poured a lot of work into my essay.
i have a college admission myth. Is it true that out of state students are more likely to become accepted then students who would pay instate tuition? maybe some universities are more greedy?
@Murmedon You're wrong. Even if all you are writing is technical papers, your ability to write well shows in your writing. Certainly not as much if you were writing a short story or something similar, but even with tech papers you can easily see who has experience writing, and who doesn't.
@MasauFuku The ability to write a technical paper is completely different than writing an English essay. I've edited numerous materials science papers and I can tell you that there is a completely different technique to it.
@Murmedon How can you say there is a different technique to it if you haven't written anything close to an English paper since HS?
In essence, both an entrance essay and a research paper are argumentative in nature (usually). Yes, the content differs drastically, but the general, goal, format and style don't. Being able to argue well in an entrance essay bodes well for most fields, not just essay heavy ones.
technical paper, English lit essays, even writing for political science differs. I remember I couldn't adjust to the writing style of history majors. Poli Sci and international affairs and economics are areas in which you really don't BS. you walk the fine line between qualitative and quantitative.Less BS the better (words and sentences written just to fill in space). But I had a history professor that was relentless and pissed that I analyzed things as a poli sci major XD
Strategies that worked for me: 1. 5-5-5 Strategy - 5 dream schools, 5 decent, 5 safety, 2. Always send your applications to safeties first and try to improve your essays & interview prep each time - by the time you get to dream school applications, you will be very experienced, 3. Get one letter of recommendation from a teacher who knows you really well, and another from someone who is more influential/well-known, 4. Best Extra-curricular combos are 1 sport, 1 performance/fine art, 1 charity.
if you put something that you tried down then you could say that you tried it out and that you put it down to let people know you are into trying different things and then if you dont like it you still stick with it and put that type of spin on it
i only applyed to one college and i liked that one and i didnt want to go to college at all and dont feel bad that i did go i liked it i just wish i didnt go at the time i did i wish i did have some time inbetween and this is a ha bisky upload
I think people dont realize that Private College tuitions are misleading. Yes it is higher but they often give you instant grants to help you. Plus the Fasfa can be a life saver for students. I think the most important stats about paying for college are the Default Rate (meaning how many kids cant afford their loans) and the Indebtedness at Graduation (How much money do you owe to the school in total).

1. I only applied to one college. It was a state college, though, and I more than qualified.
2. Hell, I was counting on financial aid. There's no way I could have even considered going without it.
3. Never thought I was special...
4. That took me by surprise. Luckily I was lazy and didn't have a lot on there.
5. I thought this too, but I took difficult classes and had a high GPA...
6. Didn't have to write an essay lol.
7. Didn't know anyone remotely famous. Non-issue for me.
