@TheMartialartsJedi I'm aware, I'm saying..why would anyone want to play Rogue Squadron when there's Tie Fighter and X-Wing. I grew up playing this game, along with Blake Stone, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D.
Trust me I know, I'm just kicking these newer Lucas games.
I don't know how anyone plays this Rogue Squadron crap when there's this and X-wing, these games STOMP them so badly. If they had a graphical overhaul then those games would just vanish underneath the weight of these titles.
I was a beast in this game when I was a kid, had a joystick and all. I loved getting medals from the emperor and whatnot. Some missions took forever...really tested my patience. hah
This is the game to create: Take X-Wing, Take Tie-Fighter, and add the vehicales from the prequel trilogy, and create a game with the graphics and music enhanced (but keep the tune of the music exactly the same), with the same gameplay mechanics, and re-release them as a single game (with online capabilities). Also, release it for the PS3, XBox360, and the Wii. Also, port the PC classics to the handhelds (DS and PSP).
I loved playing this game about 15 years ago. I think we bought all the expansion packs too. If they re-released the original I'd buy it in a second. But watching this clip reminds me how important it is to use a joystick. The mouse just makes everything frustrating.
i played this mission A LOT. i almost took out the last 2 waves of x-wings...then slammed into the space station in error...never got that close again, was down to like 5 ships left. oh well. played this game way too much :D
@Shodex4 TIE Fighter was released in 1994. Freespace 2 was released in 1999 - 5 years later. Just about any two games of similar genre will have the latter be more advanced because of home computer hardware improvements over the course of 5 years.
@rmenga I've completed TIE fighter, FS 2 and FS 1 quite recently. Freespace 2 is by far the worst game really a step backward from FS 1. It's very close between Freespace 1 and Tiefighter, but I think Tie Fighter tops it in the end!
I bought a 300$ joystick just for this game. Programming the macros for the stick, throttle and etc was a bitch, but with my (at the time) Nanao Flexscan 19" monitor, Soundblaster AWE32, and wicked speakers, it was like being in the ship itself. My dorm room was constantly full of peeps either watching or waiting for a turn to play. The re-release of the game with multliplayer was not as good as hoped. If Lucas Arts re-releases a modern version, let's hope they do it the justice it deserves, b
@mackeyt1001 I wish I was pc gaming at this time... man oh man! Like, seeing those wings come off that fighter and flying past you, man... must've been hella amazing back then dude.
@mbe102 By today's standards, it would seem lame, but back then, the sounds of blowing up X-Wings and doing fly-by's in an interceptor coming through a pair of huge speakers was quite a rush.
choose anyone of your favorite star wars game of all time. now assume that Geore Lucas is making a movie based on a video game from lucasarts and he's sending a vote out to the world of which game it will be.
what game would you choose for lucas to make a movie of and y?
I see that the guy in this video are using the old mouse controls. It's really hard to play with that if you are willing to try to go through this game these days.
I found this game somewhere and I found myself playing with it but I felt that I can't go through the maps when you have to fight against TIE/Adv 's without a joystick so I developed a little(~500byte) asm application to upgrade the mouse based gameplay. I know that it's not perfect, but it's nearly as good as with joy!
This was the first Star Wars game i ever played. It was AWESOME!!! The later games like X-Wing Alliance were great too but Tie Fighter will always be special to me.
oh my god, i used to play this game so much, this is what made me fail 1st grade this game alone. too bad they don't come out with any good games like this anymore, all it is is FPSes, adn more FPSes, and an occasional run around killing people in a ridiculous manner game
Amazing game with execellent story telling and realism. Game makers need to go back to type of game making and quit with all the first person shooters. It actually makes you feels like your a pilot fighter for the empire. I like how almost every button on the keyboard would do something. I guess people are too dumbed down to even enjoy a game like this anymore. Dont you agree?
@Stevo5000X, I used to play this for hours and hours. I still have my Collectors CD, and PC that can run it. Your right, almost every key did something. I think the game even came with a Chart.

@SwornEnemy08 Look Up: DosBox it's a free emulator that lets you play old dos games on systems with Vista/Xp you DO have to be a LITTLE DOS savvy though, so try and dig those old Dos commands out of the back of your memory!
he isnt moving. hes just rotating around. the targets are in a circle around him and hes just pointing at them to shoot. this is the first training mission afterall
@stickmanpwner64 You do move, normally. He happened to pick the one mission where you're mostly immobile, just staying still and rotating around while firing at fixed targets.
TBH he should've picked a more exciting mission to do. The Assault Gunboat ones are pretty good.
Yeah!!! Lucas Arts, Bring Back a new version of Tie fighter and X-wing for te new vwerions of windows and USB joysticks, but like simulators, not Rouge Squadron or Rebel Assault, we want a real starfighter simulator like the old times.
I would love this as a remake, but with multiplayer support. Imagine having someone pretty good to fight along side you. Those pesky A-wings wont stand a chance
Mhh, today's games are indeed great in technique and all this stuff. They make fun, too. But somehow these DOS/Amiga, ... games are making more fun. They have this special feeling, you know.
Please can u tell me where can i get this game, i played this when i was 8-years-old, and i only find the version with joystick, i cant use my mouse, please.

I remember getting sucked into this games' bonus missions. I always knew I should just end the mission, but I couldn't help myself. Those bonus missions were freakin' hard, and I usually ended up losing my fighter at the bitter end.
I SO loved this game back in its heyday! So naturally, when I picked up the Star Wars d20 roleplaying game, the first campaign I designed was an Imperial campaign, with my players playing stormtroopers; one was Force sensitive and eventually became a Dark Jedi, while another retrained and became a TIE pilot. The campaign didn't last too long, but it was fun seeing stormtroopers kick ass for a change.
I tried reinstalling TIE Fighter two years back, but Disk #3 went bad at some point. :-(
I miss my TIE Interceptor. There was nothing fancy about the Interceptor (or the Bomber, my other fave), just 100% killpower. No shields or tractor beams to dink around with...just fly right up an X-Wing's tailpipe, quad-link the ion cannons, kill his shields, switch to laser and light his rebel ass on fire. Those were the days....
I will say, though: the TIE Defender ruled the roost against those pesky little A-Wings. Tractor beam an A-Wing and pound him to dust. Speedy li'l buggers...
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter mashed up space combats and individual technique with the audiovisual Star Wars environment. It opened the doors to the imperial hierarchy, where you could be the Emperor's reference pilot.
All was perfect: missions design, story, gameplay and audiovisual component.
i was 8 when i got that game if i'm not mistaking, 1998, it was already old and obsolete technically speaking, but in 2006 i was still enjoying so much to play it - if it wasn't that hard i could even have beat it !
I bought this game when it came out. This game is pure genius. I just got my old Pentium 75 PC up and running again just to play this game again. After all these years no Star Wars game made even today can match this game's depth. A true classic.
I much preferred the DOS version to the Collector's CD-Rom...something about that midi music!
Anyone ever play X Wing Alliance? That was an awesome game, not quite as good as Tie Fighter but still really engrossing. I especially like the part where you switch between the turrets and the cockpit...sweet.
Hm. When I use it it gets laggy. ..maybe it's the resolution. I have the collectors cd edition, so I use the 640x480 resolution.....didn't even cross my mind earlier that maybe it's beacause of that....
look at the production value of this game, games today have almost none compared to games like this back in the day.Its amazing, knowing that they make more money than ever and yet 17 years ago they made better games with more production value.
I totally agree, it is time for a modern version of TIE-Fighter. And it would be very important to include this dynamic soundtrack. I mean the iMuse-system which was invented by Lucas Arts in 1991 if I remember it right.
Long ago I tried freespace - the similarities between it and tie fighter was uncanny except set in a different universe. It's like the devs used it as inspiration.
Not just bring it back...but make like...a new updated game...and I don't mean with "better graphics"....take the formula game play machanics that made tie figher so fun and build upon it....I bet in today's industry we'd have a gem of a game on our hands with the innovation development teams produce.
this looks really cool.

One of my favorite games of all time.

X-Wing vs TIE Fighter mashed up space combats and individual technique with the audiovisual Star Wars environment. It opened the doors to the imperial hierarchy, where you could be the Emperor's reference pilot.
All was perfect: missions design, story, gameplay and audiovisual component.

yep and mor e!
i was 8 when i got that game if i'm not mistaking, 1998, it was already old and obsolete technically speaking, but in 2006 i was still enjoying so much to play it - if it wasn't that hard i could even have beat it !

Hey this was my first PC game :) I've played it until my muscles atrofiated ;) mad stuff

I bought this game when it came out. This game is pure genius. I just got my old Pentium 75 PC up and running again just to play this game again. After all these years no Star Wars game made even today can match this game's depth. A true classic.

Dude, you own a relic of history. I remember the DOS version vividly! I first played it when I was six! I still love it!
Bouncer9000 2 years ago 2
I much preferred the DOS version to the Collector's CD-Rom...something about that midi music!
Anyone ever play X Wing Alliance? That was an awesome game, not quite as good as Tie Fighter but still really engrossing. I especially like the part where you switch between the turrets and the cockpit...sweet.
savenolanow 3 years ago
Yeah, the midi music is beautiful, and X Wing Alliance was awesome, but Tie Fighter kicked it ass still.

What do you use for screen capturing?
Demorior 3 years ago
DOSBox, it has an extra AVI-save function.
rmenga 3 years ago
Hm. When I use it it gets laggy. ..maybe it's the resolution. I have the collectors cd edition, so I use the 640x480 resolution.....didn't even cross my mind earlier that maybe it's beacause of that....
Demorior 3 years ago
Increase the framerate in DOXBox and it will (usually) kill the lag. The default rate it uses (DOSbox, not the game) is a bit on the slow side.
rmenga 3 years ago
Do you play with a mouse? ...takes away a lot of the joy.
Demorior 3 years ago
Had to. Getting a joystick to work thru an emulator isn't easy.
rmenga 3 years ago
By using mouse + cursor keys at the same time you can turn faster.
creaothceann 2 years ago
True, but still doesn't beat the joystick. :)
rmenga 2 years ago
I want to use the mouse and the arrow keys because i don't have a Joystick but of some reason I MUST use one.

They will never remake it. I doubt any of todays gamers could even handle it.

look at the production value of this game, games today have almost none compared to games like this back in the day.Its amazing, knowing that they make more money than ever and yet 17 years ago they made better games with more production value.
smartspick 3 years ago
I totally agree, it is time for a modern version of TIE-Fighter. And it would be very important to include this dynamic soundtrack. I mean the iMuse-system which was invented by Lucas Arts in 1991 if I remember it right.

Long ago I tried freespace - the similarities between it and tie fighter was uncanny except set in a different universe. It's like the devs used it as inspiration.
chanrobi 3 years ago
If you though Freespace was awesome you should try Freespace 2..hands down the best I've ever played
Woad25 3 years ago
Not just bring it back...but make like...a new updated game...and I don't mean with "better graphics"....take the formula game play machanics that made tie figher so fun and build upon it....I bet in today's industry we'd have a gem of a game on our hands with the innovation development teams produce.
