  • i may get some flack for this but Anthony's voice is amazing< much better than john's i mean i feel like his is waaaay to high, now for his guitar playing nothing touches it but anthony's crooning while sometimes off key always does it for me!

  • I'll miss Johns amazing backing vocals.... so damn fu****g amazing...

  • They are so much better live. God, how few bands can actually give audience that mood.

  • wow this song is beautiful...the guitar crys and i seem to feel it, not many guitartist can do that, john is legendary

  • I think for the chorus they should have gotten John to sing for every other line, that would have made sense because you can tell Anthony's out of breath

  • omg

    mtv showd it, how come

  • John = gutar jesus

  • indeed~

    drum stick throwing 3:11

  • nice catch

  • 2:09 One of the greatest riffs since the middle section of Band On The Run

  • agree

  • I got this on AVCHD (Blu-ray in a sense) it is amazinggggg!!!!

  • they look so old now...

  • could someone please tell me how to get john's sound on the verse? its treble pickup on a strat, but its not exactly a clean tone

  • You've answered the question yourself. On this live version his strat is slightly overdriven during the verse (which also makes the solo lead section slightly meatier), but I think its pretty clean on the record. It's just the bridge pick up and a dab of light distortion, add a compressor if you can too : )

  • ah i see, thank you. now if you could tell me exactly what a compressor does, id be mighty greatful

  • A compressor boosts the quiet signals and limits the louder signals so you get a smooth, even volume no matter what the velocity of your performance entails. The best compressors are ones that have a high threshold that don't limit your sound to low down in the volume (as this can lead to rather odd distortion of volumes). BOSS do a reasonable compressor that I use and would recommend to you. I think its called CS-2 or something. Hope that helps.

  • it does. thank you sir.

  • @thebigbadjohnsmith I own a lot of pedals, but I've never fancied a compressor :/

  • @baughskeet FE. Why say that though? I [and I think we all] understand that it's not a 'flashy' or 'interesting' sound world created by the pedal; it's merely a cosmetic touch-up pedal like a noise supressor. Also, it's best for the flicky, clean tone/slightly overdriven funk sounds anyway & don't know anything about your guitar playing - so you may not need one anyway.

  • @thebigbadjohnsmith Yeah I understand that it's not a flashy sound or "wet" effect or anything, but all the compressor's I've ever tried out just don't really appeal to me. They always seem to take away the percussive sound from the pick strikes too much. Maybe I haven't dialed one in correctly, but I just really prefer the raw sound and dynamics of a non-compressed tone. It's just my opinion, I do recognize that some players use them, and it sounds good, but for me, I'd rather play without.

  • @baughskeet That's fair enough and I think you've justified yourself well too. Compressors can do alot to take away from your own playing dynamics if the threshold is quite low, but they do also serve the purpose of reducing unwanted distortion or 'clipping' from the percussive strikes during 'clean tone' performances (especially at live volumes). F.E. you not using one though. I only use one at live gigs. I don't even have alot of my pedalboard at rehearsals! x

  • @baughskeet compresors sucks !!! anyways in a solo I need more laud from my guitar, John uses some gain in her guitar amp, he uses compressor in some solos I think. In 1999 -2002 he doesn't use a compressor pedal and he sounds great !!!

  • this is funny cuz the chili peppers hate MTV

  • really?

    how did u know...

    i wanna know why...

  • yea, read scar tissue and watch the interview with all 4 of them seperately at ak's house back in 94'

  • i think they created the most catchy chorus of all time

  • gotta love 1:34 though

  • I like how the back vocals are slightly louder than they are in the recorded version. It brings out the "Oomph" in the song.

  • Isn't Alcatraz a prison in Frisco???

  • Yes, but this is a club (or something like that) in Milan, Italy that has the same name.

  • its a populair name =]

  • Whoever did produced this did a fantastic job with the audio. The vocals are perfectly balanced along with everything else.

  • MTV??? lol

  • I love this song!!!!!! Great.

    Thanx

  • great song. chilies fuckin ROOOOCK!

  • Hell Yeah! great live of "Charlie" %)

  • john voice is beautiful

  • Can u image if flea played his stuff in a really fat ampeg cab instead of those GK cabs. I'm really surprised he hasn't switched, especially since he thinks so highly of a good quality bass now.

  • He's made a life time cometment to GK. They are the only amps he plays.

  • how john do this sound ?? at minute 4:15

  • with a guitar, an amplifier, and some effects. It isn't nothing out this world maybe you heard a scracht or mutted strings, but it isn't something especial

  • That was intense.

  • "move around like a scientist" wtf..

that line makes me laff, haha,

    aweosme song

(yea thats how you spell aweosme)

  • isnt this the show in milan? on mtvhd? or a diff one?

  • yea I think your right

  • when i'm lissening to this song i am happy

  • how can flea sing and play a bassline like this one?! only possibility: he's awesome !!!

  • Hell yeah! You're spot on.

  • and hes magik.

  • i agree this song has some badass bassin, but flea doesnt really have to sing much, frusciante takes the cake with those fkn high octave backing vocals thats insane, also considering he'es having to scratch the chorus which is a completley different rythem.

  • The song's easier than you think pick up a bass and try it I learned it in about an hour and it took me a good 2 weeks to get decent at Can't Stop and Tell me Baby I still can't play.

  • Can't stop is really easy.

  • And so is tell me baby :p Your just better at pick style than slap by the sounds of it.

  • If you just look at a tab and try and play with the track to Tell me Baby the chorus is pretty hard to pick up cause you can't find a good recording of it. Once you get the pattern yes its easy, but until then no. I find Charlie easy cause of the parametrics

  • The bass line in Charlie is super easy compared to other RHCP stuff. Its parametric in the bridge and the main rift is very intuitive once you get the pattern cause its not a very straight foward concept.

  • I cant even express how i luv this song. its just........ holy crap Chilis r the best.

    goooooooooosbumps
