Philadelphia, like much of the south (unfortunately) has a dark past.
But unlike other areas of the south, it's become one of the most integrated communities around. I can tell you haven't visited by your comment, because if you had - you'd have seen Native Americans, African Americans, and Caucasians living in good harmony - much more so than in larger cities that you may deem "modern" (Atlanta, New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles, etc...)
Where the civil rights workers were murdered...where the police and governement officials were out-spoken members of the terrorist group, the KKK...Uhm no thanks Philadelphia, Mississippi!

Race relations have come a long way since then.
